John Dvorak’s DVR was busy this week recording a national security wonkfest (Spook Groupies!) from CSPAN. During this meeting, a question from a reporter from Executive Intelligence Review concerning the massive flow of drugs out of the British zone of Afghanistan and General Jones speech concerning fighting drugs, international crime and the “sophisticated interface with international business” was brushed off abruptly by the moderator.
This brought up a mention of American Gangster by Dvorak, which he described as more of a documentary than a fiction piece. This film chronicles the story of Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington), a real-life Harlem crime lord who built an empire on Southeast Asian heroin in the 1970s.John Dvorak’s DVR was busy this week recording a national security wonkfest... more

By Julian Zimmerman October 22, 2010, . Story by Julian Zimmerman /AP Def Jam was created by Rick Rubin in his dorm room at New York University and its first release was a single by his punk-rock group, Hose. Russell Simmons joined Rubin shortly after they were introduced to each other by DJ Jazzy Jay. The first single released with a Def Jam Recordings logo was T La Rock & Jazzy Jay "It's Yours." The first releases with a Def Jam Recordings catalog number were LL Cool J's "I Need a Beat" and the Beastie Boys' "Rock Hard," both in 1984. The singles sold well, eventually leading to a distribution deal with CBS Records' (which would later become Sony Music Entertainment) Columbia Records the following year. This created a short-lived subsidiary label called OBR Records, catered toward R&B artists — the first artist signed to that imprint was Oran "Juice" Jones, who enjoyed success with his hit single "The Rain". Def Jam also signed their first and only thrash metal band Slayer in 1986, and their debut album was the only Def Jam release to be distributed through Geffen Records, as opposed to Columbia. As the decade drew to a close, the label signed Public Enemy, whose controversial lyrical content garnered the company both critical acclaim and disdain. Lord Hector Diono a native Washingtonian, now an Atlanta Georgia based music producer and recording artist teamed up with the covenant Def Jam Records A&R Veteran Michael"Goldie Mack" Greaux who has taken on the task of managing the underground heavy weight for better distribution and placement for his music production company Dark Town Licensing as well as his indie label Dark Town Music Group, llc after receiving an email from an international online music watch dog administrator The rapper, crooner/song writer, and music producer sealed the deal October 16, 2010 for the distribution of his next ten Album projects and the next 50 singles. "Jacob's Ladder (Climb it)was remastered and is set to be released on March 14, 2011 this is the first of many music releases to come from the Georgia based music icon, now available at all major online music outlets, industry insiders are asked to contact the Def Jam Universal A&R Veteran Michael"Goldie" Greaux regarding any interest in Lord Hector Diono whom he officially signed to his management company May 11, 2011. A new kind of war movie for a new kind of war, Body of Lies shows us the War on Terror as it is being waged on the ground, in the air and, most of all, in cyberspace. Written by William Monahan (The Departed) and directed with terrific verve by Ridley Scott (coming after the listless American Gangster), the movie follows the flow of strategic information from BlackBerrys to satellites to the 21st-century war rooms where all the world — seen from above on a wide-screen JumboTron — resembles one giant video game. Forget about nuclear launch codes and glass-encased detonators. Here, Armageddon is just an e-mail — or a text message — away. Control-alt-delete: You’re dead.A new kind of war movie for a new kind of war, Body of Lies shows us the War on Terror... more

More about the transplantation of American culture. In this article, news about MTV Arabia's newest program Hip Hop-na, or "our hip hop" in Arabic. Interesting to read about the economic motivations for this program as well as the cultural ramifications it might present.
"The programming includes a show in which viewers with webcams act as VJs, a behind-the-scenes look at the Arab music industry and tours of Middle East street scenes looking for artists with skills such as beat-boxing, breakdancing or magic tricks.
The ad-supported channel also will show desert "dune bashing," popular off-road driving over, around and into sand dunes."More about the transplantation of American culture. In this article, news about MTV... more

I'm interested in what this says about the transplantation of American culture abroad. The fact that people listen to rap music across the globe is nothing new. American music, television, and radio can be viewed in almost any country of the world. American fashion trends dominate the minds of youth everywhere. Generally, the effect of American trends being transplanted across the globe has been viewed as rather innocuous. But recently, people in the Middle East and elsewhere are beginning to question this rabid consumption of all things American. In Sudan, transplantation of gangsta culture in particular has not occurred without damaging effects. Without necessarily knowing the origins of the music that they are listening to, some young Sudanese emigrants have begun to take on the lifestyles referenced in various rap songs. They are coming up at odds with the Egyptian police as a result.

There's already Oscar buzz circulating around Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe for their roles in "American Gangster." But those involved with the movie are hoping that talk extends to the music in the film as well.
The 1960s and '70s-era soul music featured in the movie, out on Friday, is its invisible character, says Kathy Nelson, president of film music for Universal Pictures, who helped put together the music for "American Gangster."
Some of the songs are classics, like Sam & Dave's "Hold On, I'm Coming." But because licensing music can be expensive, Nelson told The Associated Press they had to be creative at times. There's already Oscar buzz circulating around Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe... more
