They have a neat, if compact kitchen, a furnished living area, and a bedroom complete with double bed, wardrobe and bookshelf featuring a wide selection including a Frank Sinatra biography and Spanish phrase book.
And they make their money in some of the biggest casinos in the world.
But their life is far from the ordinary.
Because, along with hundreds of others, the couple are part of a secret community living in the dark and dirty underground flood tunnels below the famous strip.
Rather than working in the bars or kitchens they "credit hustle", prowling the casinos searching the fruit machines for money or credits left by drunken gamblers.
Despite the risks from disease, highly venomous spiders and flooding washing them away, many of the tunnel people have put together elaborate camps with furniture, ornaments and shelves filled with belongings.
Steven and girlfriend Kathryn's base - under Caesar's Palace casino - is one of the most elaborate. They even have a kettle and a makeshift shower fabricated out of an office drinking water dispenser. They have a neat, if compact kitchen, a furnished living area, and a bedroom complete... more

Access to healthy food is not just restricted in developing countries. It is also in many cases restricted right here in our own inner cities and it is making us fatter and sicker. Community farming and giving access to healthier food to urban and poor areas of America is definitely a goal that should be entertained in addressing poverty, disease, and obesity in our country. I have heard President Obama speak to many people since his inauguration, except the poor in this country. When are we going to REALLY tackle homelessness and poverty right here in America? Why can't every community in this country have an organic garden like the one he now has outside the White House that feeds his family? Why isn't THAT in any of these politician's healthcare bills?Access to healthy food is not just restricted in developing countries. It is also in... more

What would you do with an extra $18,000 in your pocket?
That's the amount of extra cash each and every Burger King employee in America would have received last year if Goldman Sachs (one of the fast-food chain's largest owners) had shared its bailout billions with rank-and-file workers. Instead, Goldman Sachs squandered 6.5 billion of our taxpayer dollars on bonuses for their financial staff. These were some of the highest bonuses on Wall Street! Meanwhile, Burger King workers earn wages averaging just $14,000 a year -- well below the federal poverty line for a family of three.
Pass this video and contest to your friends and family. Tell them working people all over the country are pushing back against Wall Street excess. We're joining with SEIU and others to stage demonstrations and hold Goldman Sachs accountable! And tell them it's time to end this era of corporate greed and impunity. What would you do with an extra $18,000 in your pocket?

The Cameroonian parliament just conducted a little plastic surgery on the national constitution to allow President Paul Biya to stay in power another seven years. When you witness political corruption turning people’s lives upside down, do you complain or do you start a movement? Cameroonian Julius Awafong is working to build support in Africa for a radical reform called vote sizing. He hopes that giving larger votes to poor, working and middle class people like Njoh Tarke will ease the misery she and others are suffering as a result of corruption....The Cameroonian parliament just conducted a little plastic surgery on the national... more

· Our society is in bad shape –economic straits, unprovoked wars, negative international reputation, environmental destruction, addiction, powerless poverty, etc.
· The main reason it has gotten so bad is that a few wealthy people who are out of touch with ordinary life make most of the decisions about other people’s lives, the environment, the economy, the laws, the media, etc. When the people with money also have the power, it leads to corruption, i.e., the wealthy make decisions that financially benefit themselves with little regard for the society as a whole. Therefore, the concentration of wealth and power together is fundamentally unworkable and undemocratic.
· Just as we separate church and state, we need to separate wealth from power. We don’t want to take away people’s money. So the only other option is to increase the power of people on the other end by systematically increasing the size of their vote. That restores balance between wealth and power. So vote sizing tries to find the middle ground between capitalism and communism. Vote sizing is all about bringing balance where we are lopsided.
· The system is set up to keep a lower class in place so that the wealthy can make higher profits. But lack of healthcare, environmental protections, educational resources, economic options, etc. creates despair and dysfunction.
· Powerless poverty is the problem – if people want to live simply without much wealth, it wouldn’t be a problem if they had more control over government in order to ensure that their basic needs are met. This mad dash after money happens because people know they are powerless without money. But if that wasn’t the case, maybe a lot of people wouldn’t care to be wealthy. And we really all need to slow our lives down and use less, so that the earth will continue to be inhabitable and so that we can restore some sanity to our lives.
· Our society is in bad shape –economic straits, unprovoked wars, negative... more

Through out time, we have had poverty. Everyone wants to get rid of Poverty. Why? So you feel good about yourself, becuase it's the new bandwagon to jump on? Look, we need poverty. We will always have poverty. If not for poverty, how would any of us know who was in poverty? The reality is this, poverty is in the eye of the beholder. Poverty here in the USA is what around 20,000 a year? Heck millions of people would die for that. What, you only have one tv? oh my god someone help this person, they're in poverty. Do what you're parents tell you to do, goto shcool and then get a job. Learn some skills and you'll do ok. I didn't say it was going to be easy, nothing is. No poverty, is called communism and we all know that doesn't work. If you think you are in poverty, then do something about it, get another job ,heck get two I know I had to when I was younger with no skills and no education. Just quit expecting someone to just give you something for nothing. Late Rip Through out time, we have had poverty. Everyone wants to get rid of Poverty. Why?... more

Illustration of poverty in America. And really, that 19,000 figure is erroneous because at the current rate of inflation and the devaluation of the dollar, if you make 19000 a year only you are not getting that, so the poverty line is actually higher than that. Food, gas, electric, rent, and add to that high interest credit card payments with unnecessary fees because that is the only way some can make it if they need anything in an emergency, and you have a population of Americans living on the edge. So what is this government that always has money to bail out corporations really going to do to address this? Do they really care about the millions of children who go to sleep every night in shelters who are hungry and wondering what tomorrow will bring? Those of us barely hanging on? The richest country in the world? I think not.Illustration of poverty in America. And really, that 19,000 figure is erroneous... more
