When Taneika Grant, a 28-year-old Bronx native, graduated from one of New York's top universities in 2005, she thought for sure by now she would be living out her dream, working at one of the nation's top tourism or event management firms. But, like so many struggling to make do in a wavering economy, she quickly learned she'd have to pave her own path to success.
"It's really a crazy situation," she said. "I went to school for all these years. You'd think it would be easier to get employed. At some point, you feel like you have to take matters into your own hands."
That she did--whipping up a variety of Caribbean inspired confections. Nearly two years ago, she started baking leisurely. Now turned her own small business, T&O Bakery Delights has evolved into more than a hobby. It has become a solution of sorts. Even though she hasn't given up her day job, baking has brought her some solace and $3000 in revenue over the course of one year.

Disconnected. Isolated. Disjointed. These words define the lives of an increasing number of Americans between the ages of 16 and 24. Neither in school nor actively seeking work, nearly one in six New Yorkers are part of what analysts have dubbed a quiet crisis.
Researchers say the issue has recently received the attention it deserves. A report released by the Center For An Urban Future in May 2006--the most current research--estimates that by 2008 "there will be as many as three million of them [disconnected youth] nationwide."
New York City bears the brunt of the problem, housing the most disconnected youth of any American city. Despite what surely seems to be a morbid fate for New York City youth, educators and officials are stepping up to reconnect disengaged youth to the prospect of a bright future.

It is fair to say that a good percentage of the people of this country use cannabis. Whether it be for medicinal, recreational or religious purposes, marijuana users have never conceded to the government's claim that the herb is dangerous. Cannabis has been illegal in the US for over seventy years, with nearly 20 million arrests made since 1937. Surprisingly, this has not swayed the millions of Americans who chronically partake in the chronic.
So where do these people work? There are thousands of companies who treat the employee use of cannabis outside of the workplace the same as employee alcohol use outside of work. Since alcohol contributes to over 100,000 deaths annually, it is ridiculous for an employer to discriminate against an individual based on their decision to a use a healthier alternative. Yet, many still do.
If there were no "pot friendly" jobs, the nation would no doubt be slowed to a crawl, with no one to teach our children, staff our hospitals, entertain us or build our highways. (Just to name a few) How is it that while cannabis remains illegal, it also remains in the top cash crops of the US? It is the resilience of the true spirit of America. We are not all sheep. Some of us would rather live our lives based on our own set of morals and beliefs than a set of morals and beliefs handed down by a government who enslaved blacks, committed genocide on Native Americans and uses the globe as its nuclear playground.
The trillion dollar toilet flush we call the war on drugs has been an obvious failure. We, as a people, have no other choice than to Outgrow Big Bro. We all need to stand up to and overcome the adversity imposed on us by Big Brother and society in general. This mockery of justice has gone on for so long, because people have long thought that legalization is just a "pot-head" issue. It's not. The positive effects that would spring forth from a legalization of cannabis for medicinal, recreational and industrial purposes would be unimaginable.
We could lower gas prices, create jobs, heal the sick and even save the trees. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that we could all get high, which is actually the least important factor. Remember? People do that already. So, one day we may live in a Utopian society, where all jobs are "pot friendly", but until then, we are still engaged in a struggle to free the weed.

Do you trust your company's friendly information-technology personnel not to read your e-mail? Maybe you shouldn't.
A survey of IT professionals revealed that one in three admitted reading other people's messages, checking out salary details and going over board-meeting minutes, according to Reuters.
Nearly half — 47 percent — said they'd accessed information that wasn't directly relevant to their jobs.
"All you need is access to the right passwords or privileged accounts and you're privy to everything that's going on within your company," said Mark Fullbrook, U.K. director of Newton, Mass.-based security company Cyber-Ark, which conducted the survey of 300 IT professionals, in the report.
The report also found that 30 percent of administrator passwords are changed only every three months, while 9 percent are never changed at all.
"For most people, administrative passwords are a seemingly innocuous tool used by the IT department to update or amend systems," Fullbrook added. "To those 'in the know,' they are the keys to the kingdom."Do you trust your company's friendly information-technology personnel not to read... more

A report out yesterday suggests Britain may be experiencing a brain drain.
According to the Office for National Statistics the number of emigrants from the UK rose to a record 400,000 in 2006, the highest number since records began in 1991 with half of those being British citizens.
The Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR) said a total of 5.5 million British passport holders live abroad permanently, and another 500,000 live abroad part of the time through second homes.
So why are so many people leaving the UK?
The IPPR said that almost two-thirds of those who emigrated last year, did so for work-related reasons
Understandable. My friend is returning to St. Vincent next week because the job market here has not been very kind to her. And shes British and a university graduate. When my studies are complete, Ill probably be doing that myself, having had a similar experience.
According to the report, the most popular destinations for emigrants included France, Spain, Portugal, New Zealand, Australia and the US.

Another woman has joined the federal governments lawsuit against Bloomberg L.P., the financial services and media company founded by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, accusing the company of discriminating against pregnant employees.
The woman, Monica Prestia, says in the lawsuit that she was hired as an account executive with Bloomberg in 1997 and within two years was promoted to Latin American sales manager for Bloomberg Television. After she had her first child in 2005, she received the worst performance review of her career, her compensation fell, and a supervisor who could not have children of her own was openly hostile to her, the suit claims. The hostility only increased when Ms. Prestia complained to the Human Resources Department, which did not take action, the complaint states.

is it fair to dismiss a long-serving bus driver (9 years) just because of a UNINTENTIONAL descrepancy in fares? He was doing a school run & was being 'swamped' by the kids who were boarding & couldn't keep pace with 'em as they were getting on. being on a VERY tight schedule & running late. He asked for assistance from a ticket inspector who was on site, but who wasn't prepared to give it, instead, he suspended my husband from duty, eventually resulting in dismissal.
