SUVs -- high-riding and gas-guzzling -- are safer to drive, according to the latest Insurance Institute for Highway Safety report. People in 2009 cars are twice as likely to die in a rollover accident as people in 2009 SUVs. The reason for the declining SUV death rate is that electronic stability control -- a "computer-based system that helps drivers maintain control during abrupt maneuvers and on slippery roads," says CNN -- is now widely available on SUVs; the new technology has reduced the "tendency of SUVs to skid and flip over."
The report also notes that "sheer size is still a big factor in auto safety." According to the report, small cars have the highest death rates, while mid-sized or larger ones have lower scores. Also, the not-so-popular minivans rates as safer than an SUV.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is a private group financed by auto insurers.
NBC Los Angeles also says specifies which models are safest, according to the report. The Ford Edge, Nissan Armada, Land Rover Range Rover Sport, Land Rover LR3 and Honda CR-V have the lowest such rates; among luxury car models, the Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class are noted.

When it comes to snack time, black bears in Yosemite National Park have a favorite automotive treasure trove: the minivan.
From 2001 to 2007, bears broke into 908 vehicles at the park. Of those break-ins, a whopping 26 percent were minivans, according to the Journal of Mammalogy.
Top Cars Black Bears Target:
Minivan -- 26.0 percent - Sport-utility vehicle -- 22.5 percent - Small car -- 17.1 percent - Sedan -- 13.7 percent - Truck -- 11.9 percent - Van -- 4.2 percent - Sports car -- 1.7 percent - Coupe -- 1.7 percent - Station wagon -- 1.4 percent
But why minivans? Why not full-sized vans or perhaps the station wagon? According to the article, the Yosemite foragers are smarter than the average bear. They're actually contemplating risk versus reward:
"Selection of minivans by bears in Yosemite National Park was the likely consequence of efforts to maximize caloric gain and minimize costs by targeting vehicles with higher probabilities of payoff. ... The trade-off between food acquisition and penal actions by humans likely pressured bears to target vehicles with the highest probability of attaining food," according to the article. When it comes to snack time, black bears in Yosemite National Park have a favorite... more

A six-year old girl has saved her little brother's life when the van they were in began to move backwards. “She says she tried to turn the wheel so it would go this way into the field. But she said it just kept right on going this way," her mom, Sue Whitman told KGW. “Then, she jumped back in her car seat, put her seatbelt back on, took the blanket that was in the back and threw it over her and her brother to protect them from any glass.”A six-year old girl has saved her little brother's life when the van they were in... more

A Reading man climbed atop a moving minivan Friday on the West Shore Bypass, stood on the roof and rode the vehicle until it crashed and catapulted him into the woods, West Reading police reported.
Witnesses told police that the man then climbed up an embankment, stripped naked and ran several hundred yards down the busy highway bleeding from a foot-long gash in his side.
"I’ve never seen anything like this in 22 years," West Reading police Detective Joseph M. Brown said of the 3 p.m. incident. "It is not a common call we get as police."
Police responding to calls from frantic motorists used three separate jolts from a Taser and pepper spray to subdue the nude man.
The Taser had no effect, and police eventually tackled the 38-year-old from Reading, Brown said.
He was taken to Reading Hospital, police said. The hospital listed him in critical condition Friday night.
The Reading Eagle is withholding the man’s name because he has not been charged.
Brown said the investigation continues and police are awaiting the results of toxicology tests.
The bizarre scene unfolded as witnesses reported seeing a minivan going about 55 mph and swerving in the westbound lanes of the bypass near the Penn Avenue interchange.
A witness, Les Miller of West Lawn, was driving west when he saw the minivan crash into the guide rail between Penn Avenue and North Wyomissing Boulevard.
Miller said he saw clothes on the highway shoulder and a naked man with a long cut on his torso running toward him.
"He was waving his arms in the air like he was lost or he was on something," Miller said. "It wasn’t like a panicked look on his face; he was just in a daze."
Miller saw police approaching, so he didn’t stop.
