Daughter: WWI vet should lie in Capitol Rotunda
The Associated Press
Saturday, March 5, 2011; 6:11 PM
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- The daughter of the longest-living American to serve in World War I urged lawmakers to let her father, Frank Buckles, lie in the Capitol Rotunda to honor all the war's veterans.
"There is no one left," Susannah Buckles Flanagan wrote in a statement to The Associated Press. "If we lost the opportunity to bestow this highest of honors on the person who was the last surviving representative, there can be no making it up later."
Buckles died Feb. 27 at age 110.
Leaders in Washington have been divided over how to best honor Buckles and the 4.7 million other Americans who served during World War I.
West Virginia lawmakers want to see him lie in the Capitol Rotunda, and are upset with House and Senate leaders who have objected.

December 25: General Interest
1914 : The Christmas Truce
Just after midnight on Christmas morning, the majority of German troops engaged in World War I cease firing their guns and artillery and commence to sing Christmas carols. At certain points along the eastern and western fronts, the soldiers of Russia, France, and Britain even heard brass bands joining the Germans in their joyous singing.
At the first light of dawn, many of the German soldiers emerged from their trenches and approached the Allied lines across no-man's-land, calling out "Merry Christmas" in their enemies' native tongues. At first, the Allied soldiers feared it was a trick, but seeing the Germans unarmed they climbed out of their trenches and shook hands with the enemy soldiers. The men exchanged presents of cigarettes and plum puddings and sang carols and songs. There was even a documented case of soldiers from opposing sides playing a good-natured game of soccer.
The so-called Christmas Truce of 1914 came only five months after the outbreak of war in Europe and was one of the last examples of the outdated notion of chivalry between enemies in warfare. In 1915, the bloody conflict of World War I erupted in all its technological fury, and the concept of another Christmas Truce became unthinkable.December 25: General Interest

A 109-year-old believed to be the last surviving female veteran of World War I has died, Britain's Ministry of Defense reports.
Gladys Powers, who lied about her age to join the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps when she was 15, died in British Columbia, Canada, on August 14, although the ministry only announced her death on Friday.
Born in Lewisham in London, she emigrated to Canada at the end of the war after marrying a Canadian soldier.
Most of the service records of the women who served in World War I were destroyed during the Blitz in 1940, making it impossible to formally confirm her time in the military.
Paying tribute to Powers, Britain's Veterans Minister Derek Twigg said: "I am saddened to learn of the death of Gladys Powers who may have been the world's last surviving female service veteran from the First World War.
"Over 80,000 women served in our armed forces during that war.
"Although they may not have realised it at the time, these early women volunteers did much to break down the barriers for all those servicewomen who have come after them and who continue to serve their country today so proficiently and professionally."
Powers' death brings the total number of British remaining World War I veterans to three.
They are Henry Allingham, believed to be Britain's oldest man at 110, Harry Patch, also aged 110, and former Naval Seaman William Stone, who is 107.A 109-year-old believed to be the last surviving female veteran of World War I has... more

Walter Yeo, a wounded First World War soldier, became the first person to undergo plastic surgery.
Walter sustained terrible facial injuries including the loss of upper and lower eyelids while manning the guns as a sailor aboard HMS Warspite in 1916. In 1917 he was treated by Sir Harold Gillies - the first man to use skin grafts from undamaged areas on the body - and know as 'the father of plastic surgery'.
The young sailor was given new eyelids with a 'mask' of skin grafted across his face and eyes.
Artist Paddy Hartley, 37, has previously used the images in an exhibition and is now attempting to track down Walter's family to find out what happened to him. Paddy said: "This tragedy catalysed the surgeon to transform the fledgling discipline of plastic surgery. Walter Yeo last went for treatment at the Royal Naval Hospital in Plymouth 1938, but little else is known about him. It would be interesting to know what happened to him in the years that followed. I'm keen to find out how he and his family coped with the consequences of his injuries and subsequent surgery."Walter Yeo, a wounded First World War soldier, became the first person to undergo... more
