Look,Dave Cello and I go way back. He was rather territorial as I recall. I am not originally from Portland Oregon, but rather Minneapolis Mn. I started getting ticketed there for playing music in the Downtown corridor there. I was told I couldn't play uptown. I was told I couldn't play in my park where I lived at Stevens Community. I was told I couldn't play outside the IDS tower, right downtown. So,I felt,at that time Minneapolis became particularly artist unfriendly and moved Westward. Part of it is outlaw behavior. I mean,we aren't Betty Crocker approved. I am against licensing street performance. It seems Soviet to me. One example where pressure was put on street artistis was when
That city had a Kiss concert at the Target Center. There was a hallway,a long indoor hall, one which branched out to the indoor parking lot from the indoor stadium. Before and after the Kiss Concert, many of the concertgoers had to pass through this hallway to get to and from the cars. I arrived early and plunked down my keyboard and played in that hallway. Davey Cello comes along and decides I am in his spot. So,he starts to play his cello right next to where I was playing. This is blatant disrespect. I mean right next to where I sat down. We ended up splitting a lot of cash for a street music event. He did the crafty thing, but it was taking unfair advantage of a situation from where I sat,and it was also openly hostile street etiquette. You give performers some room. I can only conclude, since I knew Dave, that he was under great pressure by the city as other street artists were. We tend to be herded to certain designated out of the way spots. This was the only reasonable explanation I could come up with why he showed such little respect for my personal space as an artists trying to make a buck. It was perhaps a necessary, albeit painful lesson. You can't expect anything from people. That they are unpredicatable and often self interested and even downright rude. Sure we made decent money,by ending up splitting what was on the carpet before us,but I had yet another bad experience playing street music in that city. So,I just didn't leave Minneapolis because I was running. It was and may still be a very uptight and unfriendly place to drop your gear and play. I don't plan on returning to Minneapolis soon for any encore performances. I hope Dave Cello has learned some manners.
