During the summer of 2009, a small group of LA based fashion and art professionals, led by hairstylist Sean James took time out of their normal activities to give back to the community. Working with The Salvation Army and other recovery/relief organizations, the Halfway Home team helped two formerly homeless halfway residents to complete their sober living programs with confidence, and gave them the physical trnsformations that they would need to re-enter the workforce and take back their lives. This is the touching, upbeat story of Colleen and Bryan and their respective recoveries.During the summer of 2009, a small group of LA based fashion and art professionals,... more

Christmas is the season of giving and lately, throughout the world, people have been more generous than ever. We have all passed the humble volunteers ringing a bell with a kettle in front of a department store and perhaps you were in the giving spirit and generously donated a few dollars. Some people, who remain anonymous, have been giving more — in the form of gold.

Every year the Salvation Army helps families in need, but tonight they need help themselves. They may be forced to make more cuts if donations continue to go down.
The Salvation Army kettle ringers are out in full force trying to gain attention from shoppers, but many of them say they are getting ignored. The Salvation Army's Northwest Ohio coordinator says they are down $50,000 in kettle donations from a year ago. If you count their mailing assistance, they are down nearly $80,000.
In the bleak economy, this charity is helping 15 to 20 percent more families. And out of that number, 30 to 40 percent are newcomers. But this is the time of the year when the Salvation Army generates most of their annual budget, and if donations don't pick up something else will have to give.
"Last year, because of donations being down, we had to take a hard look at that and close 2 of our learning centers. We don't want to have to close programs. So what we're going to be looking at very closely this year is the idea that where we've served 15 or 20 people monthly in a particular program, we may be looking at 12 to15 this year monthly instead of that broader spectrum of people," says Major Clyde Jones, the Salvation Army NW Ohio Coordinator.Every year the Salvation Army helps families in need, but tonight they need help... more

Ho ho ho! How about chip and PIN?
The Salvation Army in parts of the US have finally made Santa catch up with capitalism, loading them up with credit card readers that can suck donations directly from your card, so there's no excuse for not having any change. Oh, and of course, minimum donation is $5.
It may be for a good cause and all, but I think the Christmas Spirit just died a little more in my heart.. bah hunbug.Ho ho ho! How about chip and PIN?

Happy Holiday Story: Platinum coin estimated to be worth $1,300 could not fit into the Salvation Army Kettle so the donor gave it to the bell ringer.
The bell ringer didn't keep it for himself. " It just shows how honest our bell ringers are."

What happens to American secondhand clothes? This short film follows donated used clothing from the United States to Haiti, where it becomes "pepe."
Our movie is a conversation about "pepe," the Haitian Creole word for "secondhand goods." We took a radio broadcast and interwove it with live footage from our trip to Haiti to create a patchwork of voices, coming together to make sense of the pepe phenomenon. For Haitians in the age of globalization, it's all pepe all the time.
Pepe (Secondhand) is part of our larger project about the culture and history of used clothing and diaspora communities. Visit http://www.secondhandfilm.com for more.
