Sporting Dolce&Gabbana sunglasses, Yankees cap and a silver cross, a dead Puerto Rican man stood over his own coffin as loved ones said goodbye.
Angel Pantoja Medina (24) was embalmed after his death and placed standing next to his coffin so that relatives and friends could say farewell face-to-face. Medina requested the unusual ceremony in his final will.
Undertaker Silde Ahrens said, “If a person dies of a contagious disease, they aren’t allowed on private display for more than 36 hours. Otherwise, they are permitted to be kept out for 72 hours."Sporting Dolce&Gabbana sunglasses, Yankees cap and a silver cross, a dead Puerto... more

If you want to have the smallest impact on the environment when you go, which do you choose: cremation or burial?
While there are carbon-dioxide emissions associated with cremation, the decay of a buried body in the absence of oxygen creates about the same amount of methane, which is 21 times more harmful to the climate than carbon dioxide. Pair that with the issue that valuable land is used up for burial and I think cremation wins. Add to that the impact of embalming, which involves the use of toxic and carcinogenic formaldehyde, or the less toxic glutaraldehyde. In many states, open-casket funerals require embalming, but if you opt for a closed casket, pine box and cremation, you can avoid the use of toxic chemicals.
In addition to any embalming chemicals introduced, our bodies contain so many chemicals and heavy metals that they can be considered hazardous waste under many definitions. Cremation may release dioxin and mercury into the atmosphere, while burial allows them to leach into groundwater.
According to GreenBurials.org, most people polled through the AARP Web site would prefer a green burial instead of a traditional burial or cremation. Green burials entail those that avoid embalming, use biodegradable caskets, and involve a green cemetery such as the GreenSprings Natural Cemetery in New York, Fernwood Cemetery in California or facilities that meet the Green Burial Council's standards, such as those holding a conservation easement on their land. One creative approach is taken by a Georgia company called Eternal Reefs, which mixes cremated remains (or "cremains") with concrete to produce artificial reefs that create habitat for numerous species.
A new method that has been used for years to dispose of roadkill has recently received a lot of press. Alkaline hydrolysis entails dissolving a body with lye, intense heat and pressure in a steel cylinder. The idea of flushing the resulting liquid -- it resembles motor oil -- down the drain sounds disgusting, but the method is a sanitary and environmentally friendly alternative, according to its advocates. Currently no funeral home offers this option, and it is legal in only a few states, including New Hampshire and Minnesota. A bill to legalize the process in New York was dubbed the "Hannibal Lecter Bill."
Ultimately the decision around the disposal of your body is a very personal one that needs to be carefully weighed. Luckily several environmentally friendly options are available, and you are likely to find one that meets your personal environmental values. If you want to have the smallest impact on the environment when you go, which do you... more

He's been as been as elusive as Banksy, dipping out of interviews and not accepting any DJing gigs, but the bookies favourite for this year's Mercury Music Prize, has now stepped forward, explaining the man behind the music.
"For a while there's been some talk about who I am, but it's not a big deal I wanted to be unknown because I just want it to be all about the tunes," he wrote. "Over the last year the unknown thing become an issue so I'm not into it any more.
"I'm a low key person and i just want to make some tunes, nothing else. my name's Will Bevan, I'm from south London, I'm keeping my head down and just going to finish my next album, there's going to be a 12-inch maybe in the next few weeks too with four tunes."
He added: "Sorry for any rubbish tunes I made in the past, I'll make up for it."

Hailing from the Hyperdub label, Burial has had bookmakers slashing odds on him winning the coveted music award after he was given props by some of the scene's biggest names.
Bookies William Hill cut his odds of winning from 6/1 to 3/1 after the apparent nod was given from an 'informal panel of industry representatives.'
Machine Management managing director Iain Watt spoke out saying “I think Burial should win it as his music is unique and groundbreaking; all the things the Mercury Prize should represent,”
Definitely a true sentiment, and if he won it would place him in the same hall of fame as Roni Size/Reprazents' 'New Forms' back in 1997 and Dizzee Rascal' 'Boy In Da Corner' from 2003 . Fear not indie lovers! Radiohead's marked as the critics' number two, with the bookies giving them 9/2 on clinching it with 'In Rainbows'.
You can check out some of Burial' material via his Myspace page or check out an exclusive chat on his label' website:

The nominations for this year's Nationwide Mercury Music Prize were revealed this morning.
I don't particularly care for any of these artists though.
NME breaks down who's who on the shortlist:
"Adele - Soul star Adele broke through at the beginning of this year, racking up a Number One record with debut album '19'."
"British Sea Power - The Brighton based four-piece gained a nod with their third album 'Do You Like Rock Music?', and have been critics' favourites since their debut record 'The Decline Of British Sea Power' five years ago. They are know for their enigmatic live shows, which sees band members climbing scaffolding round a stage usually featuring some kid of foliage, as well as their devoted fans."
"Burial - This London based dubstep artist has received a nomination for his second album 'Untrue'. The anonymous producer has already gained awards for his releases, as well as remixing fans Bloc Party and Thom Yorke, but still no one knows what he looks like. "
"Elbow - Epic rockers Elbow are up for a Mercury nod with album 'The Seldom Seen Kid'. The Manchester band's fourth record was delayed for nearly two years as the band swapped record labels but they made up for lost time with an album that includes a guest spot from former Mercury nominee Richard Hawley."
"Estelle - London hip-hop lass Estelle cracked the UK this year with her American-influenced second album 'Shine', which saw her team up with Kanye West, Mark Ronson and John Legend. She scored a number one with the first single from the record 'American Boy', which features the aforementioned West, and is regularly covered by Jay-Z live."
"Laura Marling - The Reading-born teen sensation has been building up a huge folk following since the release of her first studio album 'Alas, I Cannot Swim' in February. The waif-like musician also sings with Noah and the Whale."
"The Last Shadow Puppets - Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner has now notched up a hatrick of Mercury nominations as his collaboration with The Rascals singer Miles Kane, follows nods in 2006 and 2007 for his main band. 'The Age Of The Understatement' boasts a Scott Walker-vibe, with lush strings from Arcade Fire collaborator Owen Pallett and production from Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford who also played drums on the record."
"Neon Neon - The side project of Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys. The Welsh man teamed up with producer Boom Bip in 2006 to start work on the album 'Stainless Style', a 1980s-influenced concept album about the playboy designer John DeLorean, the main responsible for the DeLorean car featured in the 'Back To The Future' movies."
"Portico Quartet - The London based jazz quartet's debut album 'Knee-Deep In The North Sea' has been nominated for the prize this year. Renowned for busking in unusual gigging places, from churches to galleries, the foursome are booked up to play festivals this year with their hooky jazz sound."
"Rachel Unthank And The Winterset – The folk four-piece from Northumberland are already a critics favourite, and are up for the prize with their second album 'The Bairns'. The band are playing all over Europe and America for the next few months."
"Robert Plant and Alison Krauss - The Led Zeppelin frontman's collaboration record with bluegrass country singer , 'Raising Sand', hit high in the charts both in the UK and USA. The highly hyped team up has proved popular with both fans and critics"
"Radiohead - The Oxford quintet's seventh album, 'In Rainbows', caused a storm last year after the group told fans they could decide how much they wanted to pay for it as a download. The iconic Oxford band's album later hit the top of the charts after its retail release and has been praised by critics worldwide."

"Promessa Organic AB is developing and offering a new method of laying the dead to rest. An environmentally friendly form of burial that takes full consideration of the biological realities to which a corpse is subjected.
"Our ecological burial reduces environmental impact on some of our most important resources; our water, air and soil," says Susanne Wiigh-Mäsak, biologist and head of Promessa Organic AB."
I for one feel that turning the dead into something useful and beautiful like a cherry tree or a flower bush is far more morally superior to simply throwing them into a fire or into the ground. Giving our dead back to the environment is leagues more respectful than letting them rot or sit on our mantelpiece as a decoration."Promessa Organic AB is developing and offering a new method of laying the dead... more

Still anonymous, still making incredible music, Burial is back with a new full-length LP of dark, minimal dubstep called Untrue. As with the first record ("Burial") you'll be hard-pressed to find any tracks on this album suitable to the dance floor, which doesn't make Burial's brooding, introspective beats any less engaging or any less enjoyable to hear, but, rather, makes his music more suited to infect you through your headphones on a rainy late-night muni ride through the tenderloin. Be sure to check out the interview on Hyperdub's website.Still anonymous, still making incredible music, Burial is back with a new full-length... more
