Violent protests rocked northern Kosovo yesterday, with mobs chanting "Kosovo is ours!", and throwing stones, bottles and firecrackers at UN police. Families of diplomats and staff have been evacuated from the Serbian embassy in Belgrade, after rioters stormed the building and set it on fire on Thursday. The EU has warned that diplomatic relations could be seriously harmed, and the United States has accused the Serbian government of failure to protect its assets.
A top U.S. diplomat was asked during an interview if the Serbian government "gets" the warning they were issued last week.
"They'd better get it, because they have a fundamental responsibility to protect our diplomats and our embassy and to protect American citizens," said Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs R. Nicholas Burns. "What happened yesterday in Belgrade was absolutely reprehensible."Violent protests rocked northern Kosovo yesterday, with mobs chanting "Kosovo is... more

Kosovo is just in its last days of declaring independence from Serbia, which is a great issue involving all major countries in the Balkan region and entire world.
Internews Kosova is a coproducer of a weekly TV debate Jeta ne Kosove (Life in Kosovo) and we have produced a 8 minute piece that you might want to use for current.tv. We are in the final stages of editing it.
For your information, at the end of each weekly debate, we play a short satire of Dhandrri i Kosoves (Kosova's Son in Law) that comments on that night's debate main issue.
The main character is an American who came to Kosovo after the war, married here and in order to be liked by his father in law, comes up with all these weird ideas of how to solve Kosova's problems.
This character is the most famous comic character in Kosovo and I believe you will find it interesting for future cooperation as well. When I upload it on current.tv I will send you another e-mail so you can play it in good time when the independence of Kosovo is declared (planned for Sunday afternoon CET).

"Nato troops have sealed the northern borders of Kosovo after Serbs angry at its weekend declaration of independence ransacked two crossings. Hundreds of protesters torched customs and police posts at Jarinje and Banja, manned by UN and Kosovo police.
Closing the borders will infuriate both Kosovo Serbs and Serbia's government, says the BBC's Nick Thorpe in Kosovo. The move cuts Kosovo's mainly Serb north off from Serbia, the country to which they insist they still belong.
Nato said it was shutting the crossings, initially for a 24-hour period.""Nato troops have sealed the northern borders of Kosovo after Serbs angry at its... more

From 1999-2003 JEMGLO produced a documentary entitled From Refugee to Immigrant: A Story of Three Kosovar Albanian Americans. Broadcast in the US on about 25% of the PBS market as well as internationally on Albanian cable TV channel 21, premiered at the United Nations, and reviewed in The New York Times, the documentary focused on three refugees who had come to the US during the war. With their distinctive personalities sparking a range of reactions, Bekim, Gentian and Plator struggled with the memories of their experiences during the ethnic cleansing of the Albanians by the Serbs, the bare subsistence to which their loved ones back home had been reduced, and their need to integrate into American society. From 1999-2003 JEMGLO produced a documentary entitled From Refugee to Immigrant: A... more

"Kosovo became the world's 193rd nation state yesterday. For the Albanians who constitute 90 per cent of Kosovo's people, the declaration marked the end of generations of oppression by Serbs, who claim Kosovo as their historic homeland but for centuries have accounted for a minority of its population. Yet for all the euphoria, there was a decorous, almost sombre edge to the festivities. Kosovo takes to the world stage with the less than unanimous backing of Europe and amid angry denunciations by Serbia and Russia."
Alas it is not full sovereignty for the newly independent state:

The weather forecast for Kosovo today is heavy snow, but chilly weather is far from the mind of most, as today the province will proclaim independence from Serbia, ending years of bitter recrimination and threats from both sides. In the bloody Albanian uprising ten years ago this week, thousands of civilians were murdered, prompting Western forces including Britain to bomb Serbia in attempts to quell the violence. Since 1991, Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Montenegro have each asserted self-rule, and slipped from Serbia's territory. Kosovo's declaration will come at 3.00 pm (2 pm British time). As the Russian president is coming to the end of his final term in office, he has reportedly offered 'biting criticism' of Europe's double standards after Europe's top election watchdog, OSCE, who revealed last week that they would not be monitoring the upcoming Russian elections due to Moscow implementing severe restrictions on them after their requests were labelled as an 'ultimatum' by Russia.
He also openly spoke out about Russia's disapproval of Serbia's plans to claim their independence, claiming that such a move would violate the basic principles of international law: "I would like to underline the fact that we think that support of unilateral announcement of Kosovo is not moral or legal," Putin said.
Putin, who is expected to move straight into the position of Russian prime minister if his self-appointed successor Dmitry Medvedev takes the March 2nd vote, said that his two terms as President for Russia had been "gifts from the Russian people and from God."

Serbia's president Boris Tadic has warned of an escalation in conflicts if Kosovo does declares independence.Despite this, Kosovo is expected to declare independence from Serbia on the 17th of February with the support of the United States and many members of the EU.
"Should Serbia be partitioned against its will... it could in turn result in the escalation of many existing conflicts, the reactivation of a number of frozen conflicts, and the instigation of who knows how many new conflicts," were the words of the president, who in the words of the BBC 'is between a rock and a hard place',

European governments struggled to find agreement yesterday on how to respond to the looming crisis over Kosovo independence on the day that almost two years of negotiations between Kosovo Albanian leaders and the Serbian government were declared dead.
As thousands of ethnic Albanians rallied in the Kosovo capital, Pristina, to demand prompt support for Kosovo statehood, Wolfgang Ischinger, the German diplomat who chaired futile negotiations between the two sides over the past four months, briefed EU foreign ministers in Brussels and sought to marshal a consensus behind European recognition of Kosovo over the next couple of months. Diplomats said the EU was split three ways between those who backed an independent Kosovo, those who opposed it, and those who advocated a tougher EU policy against Serbia.European governments struggled to find agreement yesterday on how to respond to the... more
