It doesn’t take a Nostradamus to see the host of calamities our primeval mindset is capable of manifesting. What happened to Jackson Browne singing about the healing power of the sun? After Three Mile Island nuclear energy publicly became the unacceptable risk Dr. Helen Caldicott warned us about. We canceled canoe trips to protest at General Electric until comfort became our cause allowing nuclear megawatts a backstage pass into the main stream. Today the land of the rising plume is seeing solar in a different light after a crippling 9.0 magnitude earthquake rocked their tenuous power grid. Instead of the one inch per year average, tectonic plates shifted Japan 13 feet in moments equaling 157 years of time travel. It doesn’t take a Nostradamus to see the host of calamities our primeval mindset... more

Valentines Day has different meanings for different people. For some, you may wish your wives and husbands, daughters, sons, mothers, fathers, and other people in your lives a happy day of appreciation for the love that they've shown you and others throughout your years of being together. Then too, in you're anything like me, you might feel at peace in acknowledging the love that you've found in yourself. That's an inside job and it's the greatest love of all. I heard an old Jackson Browne song this morning on the radio. He reminded me that "in the end there's one dance that I'll do alone". That 's learning to love unconditionally.Keep a fire for the human race.

A group of prominent musicians are joining a campaign to close Guantanamo Bay and demanding the release of records about what music was used during the potential torture of detainees there and at other facilities.
Some of the more famous names in the music industry are formally lending their prestige to an effort being led by retired generals, progressive groups and a former member of Congress to shut GITMO down. The list includes Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Jackson Browne, Rise Against, Rosanne Cash, Billy Bragg and the Roots, all of whom are joining the broader National Campaign to Close Guantanamo which was launched earlier in the week.
Hoping to cast further light on the potential illegalities that took place at the detention facility, the group is also working to obtain records about why and how music was used (under laws authorized by the Bush administration) to effectively torture suspected terrorists. The musicians have officially endorsed a Freedom of Information Act request for the declassification of all secret government records pertaining to music utilized during interrogations. At least two members of the coalition, Reznor and Morello, have had their music linked to interrogations.
"Guantanamo is known around the world as one of the places where human beings have been tortured -- from water boarding, to stripping, hooding and forcing detainees into humiliating sexual acts -- playing music for 72 hours in a row at volumes just below that to shatter the eardrums," said Morello, in a statement provided by the NCCG. "Guantanamo may be Dick Cheney's idea of America, but it's not mine. The fact that music I helped create was used in crimes against humanity sickens me -- we need to end torture and close Guantanamo now."
The National Security Archives will be officially filing the FOIA request on behalf of the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo (NCCG)

The GOP is also vowing to get artists' permission before using musicians' work in future political campaigns.
The apology and pledge were released Tuesday along with an announcement of a settlement with Browne over a federal copyright infringement lawsuit filed last year in Los Angeles. Browne sued McCain and the national and Ohio Republican parties for using part of his song "Running on Empty" to mock Democrat Barack Obama's proposed energy policies in a Web ad.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is not out of the woods on one pending legal matter involving his presidential campaign.
A federal district court in Los Angeles over the weekend declined to dismiss singer Jackson Browne's lawsuit against the senator and the Republican National Committee for the unauthorized use of his song "Running On Empty" in a political Web video.
Browne, an outspoken liberal, sued McCain, the RNC and the Ohio Republican Party for copyright infringement last August after the state party used his famous song in an online video promoting McCain's presidential candidacy.
The rocker's attorney, Lawrence Iser, says the court's decision this past weekend is a "solid victory for songwriters and performers and reflects an affirmation of their intellectual property rights and their freedom from being conscripted as involuntary endorsers of political candidates and campaign messages."Sen. Urge Your Two U.S. Senators: Block $166 Billion Money Grab by Nuclear Power Industry!
U.S. Capitol Switchboard: (202) 224-3121
Background: In response to high gasoline prices, an energy bill is on the floor of the U.S. House of Represenatives today. To the best of our knowledge, it does not contain subsidies to promote nuclear power. However, legislation to allow offshore oil drilling on the Outer Continental Shelf could hit the U.S. Senate floor later this week. Not being reported in the media is the fact that this Senate bill also contains massive taxpayer subsidies for the nuclear power industry.
Introduced by the “Gang of 10” Senators in August -- which has now grown to the "Gang of 20" -- the “New Energy Reform Act of 2008” has not yet been put in legislative form and still lacks a bill number. The plan is sponsored by such bipartisan pro-nuclear Senators as Republicans Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson of Georgia, and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, as well as Democrats Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor of Arkansas, and Ben Nelson of Nebraska.
It contains from $87 to $166 billion in nuclear power subsidies of various sorts. These include increasing the number of Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff to expedite new reactor licensing, and authorizing “risk insurance” for nuclear utilities if the start up of their new reactors is delayed for any reason. Other proposed giveaways include funding for training nuclear workers, supporting the re-establishment of a U.S. industrial infrastructure for manufacturing large nuclear components such as reactor pressure vessels, and building a demonstration radioactive waste reprocessing facility. The plan would also massively expand the federal loan guarantees for new reactors, leaving taxpayers on the hook for up to $160 billion if nuclear utilities default on loan repayments. In 2003, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that over half of new reactor construction projects would default on their loans.

Singer-songwriter Jackson Browne is suing Republican presidential nominee John McCain and the Republican party for using his song “Running on Empty” in a recent TV commercial.
In the suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, Browne claims McCain and the party did not obtain permission to use the song for an ad in which “Senator McCain and the Republicans mock Democratic candidate for president Barack Obama for suggesting that the country conserve gas through proper tire inflation.”Singer-songwriter Jackson Browne is suing Republican presidential nominee John McCain... more

Singer, songwriter, liberal activist and now John McCain scourge Jackson Browne filed a lawsuit today against the presumptive GOP nominee and the Republican Party for failing to obtain a license to use one of his songs in a television commercial.
The song, "Running on Empty," has been used by the Ohio Republican Party (not the McCain campaign) apparently against Browne's approval. The music icon also claims that in doing so, the false perception is created that he is endorsing McCain's candidacy.
If the whole episode strikes a nostalgic tone, it's because famous musical artists and Republican presidential candidates have butted heads in the past. Bruce Springsteen publicly complained when Ronald Reagan used "Born in the U.S.A" during his campaign in 1984.

Jackson Browne says that Democrat John Edwards is the most progressive candidate with a chance at winning the White House, and that he would do the most for working-class Americans.
Edwards frequently says he wants to expand safe, renewable fuels opportunities and would oppose the construction of more nuclear power plants.
He said Edwards is "certainly the most progressive of the candidates that have a chance" at winning the presidency. He said that Edwards had the best solutions for the Iraq war, health care and nuclear power, and that he would faithfully represent working Americans.
