From Where I Sit: Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head -- Earth Changes -- Sott.net
What struck me tonight were a number of strange juxtapositions. First off, there are the items about weather and earthquake weapons that made the rounds over the past week or so. The first one was about former Defense Secretary Cohen openly referring to HAARP when he admitted to programs that could "alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves." Search for it on the net, you'll find it on a bunch of conspiracy sites (not that we don't think there's a whole bunch of conspiring going on ourselves here on SOTT.net). http://www.sott.net/articles/show/228862-From-Where-I-Sit-Raindrops-Keep-Fallin-On-My-HeadWhat struck me tonight were a number of strange juxtapositions. HAARP and The Canary in the Mine -- Puppet Masters -- Sott.net
By shooting intense radio beams into the night sky, researchers created a modest neon light show visible from the ground. The process is not well understood, but scientists speculate it could one day be employed to light a city or generate celestial advertisements.
Researchers with the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) project in Alaska tickled the upper atmosphere to the extent that it glowed with green speckles. The speckles were sprinkled amid a natural display known as the aurora borealis, or Northern Lights. Glyphosate drift a major problem in the U.S.
NOTE: When they're not having their markets destroyed by GM contamination, U.S. rice farmers are suffering serious harm from the massive applications of glyphosate onto the Roundup Ready crops around them. The damage can include young rice crops being killed, thinned or burned off, as well as significantly decreased yields, deformed kernels and problems with milling, when the rice is harvested.
---
---
Glyphosate drift to rice a problem for all of us
Mike Wagner, President, Mississippi Rice Council
Farm Press, May 12 2011
http://deltafarmpress.com/rice/glyphosate-drift-rice-problem-all-us
[Editor's note: the following commentary was adapted from a speech by Mike Wagner, rice farmer and president of the Mississippi Rice Council, at this year's Mississippi Agricultural Aviation Association meeting.]
Airplanes and ground applicators have been used to apply amendments to rice crops in Mississippi since the mid-1950s, and the interests and success of rice producers and aerial aviators have become intricately intertwined.
In the late 1990s, technology inserted into cotton, soybeans, and corn allowed over-the-top application of glyphosate onto those crops. The technology immediately revolutionized the production systems for those crops.
The U.S. rice industry never adapted the glyphosate-resistant technology for fear that its product - consumed with virtually no processing - would be forsaken by consumers worldwide. And so, non-transgenic rice is planted in a sea of genetically modified crops that are tolerant to glyphosate.
For years, this seemed to pose no real problem or threat. In the early to mid part of the last decade, however, reports of rice damaged by glyphosate drift began to surface with increasing frequency. Rice specialists noticed that rice that had no obvious damage through the growing season would yield and mill poorly and would exhibit the classic trait associated with late glyphosate drift — the kernel would be shaped like a parrot beak instead of its normally elongated, symmetrical shape.
In 2006, immediately after most crops were planted in the Delta, a wet and windy period set in. Airplanes set out to spray cotton, corn, and soybean fields plagued with weeds. Not many thought much of it at first.
By mid-May, however, reports of dead rice and rice burned off to the ground began to surface. Soon the reports were widespread. It was estimated that 30,000 to 50,000 acres of rice were damaged or destroyed that year by glyphosate.
So much glyphosate seemed to go out in such a short time over such a large area that it was often difficult to identify the offenders. Many farmers were never compensated for damages.
The extensive damage to what was already an economically challenging crop did not set well with Mississippi's rice industry. Frustrations were on two levels: (1) penalties often seemed insignificant and violators (especially repeat violators) were given what our industry perceived to be a wrist-slapping, and (2) the level of liability insurance coverage was in many cases not enough to cover one claim, much less multiple claims.
Mississippi's rice farmers petitioned the state capitol and the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce for change and got it. The responsibility for the dispensing of penalties for aerial applicators found in violation of rules was given to the Bureau of Plant Industry. Aerial applicators and ground applicators now work with the same penalty structure, commonly called the Penalty Matrix. This provides a uniform system of penalty assessment among all applicators, aerial and ground, and penalties are now meted out in uniform fashion.
In addition, after careful consideration the MAAA acted to increase their minimal liability insurance requirements from $100,000 to $300,000, with a $500,000 aggregate.
One can divide the window of timing and the types of damage that glyphosate drift onto rice can have into two periods.
The first is from emergence to flooding. Rice hit at this time could be thinned, burned off to the ground only to re-emerge in various maturity and health stages, or killed. In some cases, with increased expense, it can be managed so that the crop grows out of the damage and goes on to make a normal or somewhat reduced yield.
If the young crop is killed, it can be replanted with rice (which research indicates will generally suffer a yield loss), or if pre-emerge herbicides applied to the rice allow, the land can be planted to an alternate crop.
Either effort will increase production costs and generally produce a crop with decreased yield potential.
The second distinct period that glyphosate damage occurs - and by far the most detrimental - is from a short time before internode elongation to the time when the crop begins to dry down. Mississippi's rice crop generally begins its internode elongation period around June 1, and it is at this time that much yield potential is set.
Damage inflicted by derelict glyphosate during this period is often invisible and not noticed until harvest. Damage is characterized by significantly decreased yields and milling and the rice often exhibits the first signal that it has been hit with drift — kernels shaped like a parrot's beak.
Damage occurring at this time does not allow for an alternate crop to be replanted. Consequently, the farmer has two nooses around his neck: (1) he is stuck with a crop that will generate lower revenues, and (2) he has already incurred nearly all expenses that are associated with that crop. With anticipated 2011 direct expenses between $450 and $600 per acre and indirect expenses ranging from $200 to $300 per acre — total expenses range from $650 to $900 per acre — one can see that any losses can be staggering. This is a losing proposition for our rice industry, and one that continues to occur. Our alarm is warranted.

No,.. a "little" Radiation is NOT good for YOU!
Government scientists and media shills are now “reexamining” old studies that show that radioactive substances like plutonium cause cancer and arguing that exposure to low doses of radiation is good for us (a theory called “hormesis”).
It is not just bubbleheads like Ann Coulter and pro-nuclear hacks like Lawrence Solomon are saying it as well. In virtually every discussion on the risk of nuclear radiation, someone post comments arguing that a little radiation makes us healthier.
However, the official position is that there is insufficient data to support the hormesis theory: As Wikipedia notes:
Consensus reports by the United States National Research Council and the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements and the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) have upheld that insufficient human data on radiation hormesis exists to supplant the Linear no-threshold model (LNT). Therefore, the LNT continues to be the model generally used by regulatory agencies for human radiation exposure.
***
The notion of radiation hormesis has been rejected by the National Research Council’s (part of the National Academy of Sciences) 16 year long study on the Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation. “The scientific research base shows that there is no threshold of exposure below which low levels of ionizing radiation can be demonstrated to be harmless or beneficial.
See this, this, this and this.
Most proponents of the hormesis theory claim that data from the residents of Nagasaki and Hiroshima shows that residents exposed to low levels of radiation (i.e. some miles from the bomb blasts) lived longer than residents who lived so far away that they were not exposed to any radiation.
However, as Reuters noted in 2000:
Japanese survivors of the atomic bomb have their life expectancy reduced by an average about 4 months, which does not support claims that survivors exposed to low levels of radiation live longer than comparable unexposed individuals.
To clarify the question of whether atomic bomb survivors have enhanced or reduced life expectancy, Drs. John B. Cologne and Dale L. Preston from the Radiation Effects Research Foundation, Hiroshima, Japan, studied 120,321 survivors and estimated their radiation exposure and mortality rates after 45 years of follow up.
They report in the July 22nd issue of The Lancet that median life expectancy fell by about 1.3 years per Gy of estimated radiation dose, and declined faster at higher doses. At doses below 1 Gy, median life expectancy fell by about 2 months, while exposures of greater than 1 Gy resulted in a median loss of life of 2.6 years.
Drs. Cologne and Preston estimate that at a dose of 1 Gy, 60% of those exposed died from solid cancer, 30% from illnesses other than cancer, and 10% from leukemia.
“These results are important in light of the recent finding that radiation significantly increases mortality rates for causes other than cancer,” they write.
A large study of bone cancer in survivors of Nagasaki and Hiroshima published in March of this year also showed no hormesis, but rather increased cancer risk even at low doses. (See this and this for more evidence that low levels of radiation can cause cancer.)
Other data has also been misinterpreted by those who advocate that a little radiation is good for you. For example, the above-quoted Wikipedia article notes:
In popular treatments of radiation hormesis, a study of the inhabitants of apartment buildings in Taiwan has received prominent attention. The building materials had been accidentally contaminated with Cobalt-60 but the study found cancer mortality rates more than 20 times lower than in the population as a whole. However, this study compared the relatively young irradiated population with the much older general population of Taiwan, which is a major flaw. A subsequent study by Hwang et al. (2006) found a significant exposure-dependent increase in cancer in the irradiated population, particularly leukemia in men and thyroid cancer in women, though this trend is only detected amongst those who were first exposed before the age of 30. This study also found that rate of total cancer cases was lower than expected.

Commercial Bee Farms Feed GM High Fructose Corn Syrup to Bees!
A quick premise for the people that do not know who Monsanto is and what is high fructose corn syrup:
Monsanto is the leading producer of biochemical products and the world's largest seed company. It has monopolized agriculture and our food with its genetically engineered corn, soy and cotton.
From this GM corn, a substance is made: High fructose corn syrup; it's found as an ingredient in almost every conventional food. It's used as a sweetener, flavor enhancer, preservative and is cheap.
More and more studies are showing the dangerous effects of this substance that not only feeds humans but is used to feed livestock, pigs, chickens, fishes and even our precious bees!
This genetically engineered food has been deteriorating people's health for over 40 years since its introduction to our agriculture.
It was engineered to work in conjunction with the herbicide "Roundup" which contaminates water, soil and kills all plants and animals.
Ironically, this industry is heavily subsidized by the government; our tax money are put to work against us and to enrich corporations like Monsanto, Syngenta, Dow, Bayer etc.
You can learn more about who owns nature here (excellent publication):
http://www.etcgroup.org/upload/publication/707/01/etc_won_report_final_color.pdf
Said this, since 2006, billions of bee colonies have died for no apparent reason. This phenomenon has affected the world's food production, and has been titled "Colony Collapse Disorder" (CCD). As you might know already, bees are responsible for 1/3 of the world's food production, and it is one of the world's most important natural assets.
We think of the CCD for the bees as the cancer for humans.
We believe that one of the main causes of the massive dying off of bees is high fructose corn syrup. Learn more about the importance of bees:
http://www.pan-europe.info/Resources/Articles/A_World_Without_Bees.pdf.
Other causes are pesticides, antibiotics, parasites, pathogens, livestock-like practices (bigger hive cell sizes, migratory stress, antibiotics, various chemicals used), drought, etc.
Also, as a result of this diet, the honey that gets produced is essentially high fructose corn syrup and honey mixed together; there isn't such a thing as "pure" or "natural" honey.
Now, why would beekeepers feed this poison to bees? Simply and tragically because it is a money saving solution, the quick fix mentality and the adoption of short sighted solutions.
Who's behind all of this?
The corporations that control corn, soy, cotton, also control nature, control our economy and society just like the fossil fuel industry does. Corporatism is killing nature and people, represents our current economy and laws, and is the new Nazism or form of imperialism.
What's the solution?
A healthy environment and organic beekeeping are the answer to this problem, learn more here: http://www.bee-hexagon.net/files/file/fileE/Organic/ProgramAbstracts.pdf
This can only be achieved if we steer away from a chemical based agriculture and embrace an organic agriculture where principles of permaculture, sustainability and biodiversity are implemented.
You can start by supporting the organic market, you can call your congress representatives and pressure them to subsidize organic agriculture and abandon our current system: https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml.
More than that, you can sign the petition that can stop this all:

Depleted Uranium: A Strange Way To Protect Civilians
“Depleted uranium tipped missiles fit the description of a dirty bomb in every way… I would say that it is the perfect weapon for killing lots of people.” ~ Marion Falk, chemical physicist (retd), Lawrence Livermore Lab, California, USA
In the first 24 hours of the Libyan attack, US B-2s dropped forty-five 2,000-pound bombs. These massive bombs, along with the Cruise missiles launched from British and French planes and ships, all contained depleted uranium (DU) warheads.
DU is the waste product from the process of enriching uranium ore. It is used in nuclear weapons and reactors. Because it is a very heavy substance, 1.7 times denser than lead, it is highly valued by the military for its ability to punch through armored vehicles and buildings. When a weapon made with a DU tip strikes a solid object like the side of a tank, it goes straight through it, then erupts in a burning cloud of vapor. The vapor settles as dust, which is not only poisonous, but also radioactive.

Poison Control Centers On GOP Chopping Block
Poison control centers are the target of federal budget cuts. House Republicans voted to cut more than 90% of funding and have just one national poison hotline. That would shut down 56 state and regional centers including the one in Illinois.
Every year the Illinois Poison Center in Chicago answers more than 90 thousand calls from families and healthcare professionals.
Kris Sherrill, with Southern Illinois Healthcare and the poison center, says those phone calls save lives and money.
"In 75% of the cases the Illinois Poison Center can take care of the situation right there and the person doesn't have to seek care at the emergency department," said Sherrill, "that's a huge savings."
A study cited by the Department of Health and Human Services says every dollar spent on poison control centers, saves seven dollars in health care spending.
House Republicans proposed cutting all but two million of the $29 million budget, closing the Illinois Poison Center and others across the country leaving only the one D.C.
"If they cut $27 Million then the next year they're gonna spend one billion because that's how much money poison centers save overall across the country," said Carol DesLauriers, Operations Director for the Illinois Poison Center.
Supporters of the proposal say there's no need for 57 similar call centers throughout the US, especially with today's technology.
But poison control centers say local relationships and knowledge of local toxins are invaluable resources.
Emergency managers at two local hospitals say having one call center would be fine, as long as there isn't an extended wait. After all poison control centers average a call every five minutes.
"The amount of staff they would have to hire for one office, I just can't imagine that they're gonna hire the number of people that they need to, to take all the calls they get throughout the day," said Sherrill.
The Senate rejected the spending bill, but lawmakers will still need to negotiate a final bill which could include the cuts to poison centers.

REVOLUTION, by VIOLENCE or FORCE?
Since posting a commentary on the question of whether legislators should be held accountable for treasonous acts against the people, or, "aiding the enemy", in the same manner as Bradley Manning is being held accountable for "aiding the enemy", a commenter has asked if I'm promoting the use of violence in our efforts to reclaim government control.
This author does not promote violence, period. However, I can certainly understand how many desperate people may be , and probably will be, driven to some form of violence, either against bankers who defrauded them and turned them out of their homes, legislators who betray them and vote their public services away, industrialists who poison them or their environments and businesses which steal their pensions and then ship their jobs overseas. In truth, I have several times emailed our President suggesting that people are so desperately on the ropes of despair, without reason for hope of a better tomorrow and verging on a rage which is very likely to lead to widespread violence, in hopes that he can and will act quickly to remedy this tragedy. It is testimony to the good character of the American people, alone, that they have not already shot Supreme Court Justices who have betrayed America, legislators who help corporate America to steal their money and business which abuses them. This, in my opinion, is nearly miraculous restraint on the public's part. Because, surely, the crimes committed against the people to date, have already warranted the greatest of resentment and anger amongst the public.
The use of force in the public take back of our government from the corporate forces, is another question entirely. Force can manifest in many forms, and none of them necessarily violent. The Wisconsin 14 remaining out of Walker's clutches and manipulation, combined with the recall movement of his compatriots, may force him to negotiate and make concessions which he, otherwise, swore that he would not do. If this nation, and hopefully the world, participate in the May 5th, INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WORK STOPPAGE, to the point that it brings all commerce, government, air transport and even telecommunications to a standstill, then that may force the hands which are holding the nooses around the public's neck, to loosen their grip, even just a bit. Other subsequent public actions may force the noose right out of their hands. This type and form of force, I do wholly support and recommend. This type of force is the only way that I believe we can reclaim our heritage, our government, our wealth and our greater dignity, all of which are owed to us.
For example:
Dear Paratus,
Thank you for your concern and engagement. While I am not familiar with shio nage, at all, we have already witnessed the taking and using of weapons to political events. We have already witnessed the assassinations, and attempted assassinations, of political figures. It has been suggested that the perpetrators of these past episodes of violence were mentally unstable. While my comments have not intentionally referenced such actions, while your's have, we all may be well served to consider that the widespread desperation of our fellow citizens, today, may have already destabilized the mental normalcy of many. Therefore, there may be many, from both sides of the aisle, who are contemplating taking weapons of destruction to political events, and using them against political figures. Unfortunately, these are not possibilities which can be resolved by our blogging, but rather, can, and should, be resolved by our political figures.
It seems to me that our exchange has blurred and merged two issues which are not necessarily codependent. The legitimate discussion of appropriate and legal means of holding our legislators accountable for their actions, does not imply, or equate to, the unbridled exchange of gunfire between those who much has been taken from, and the Right which insists on taking more from them. Although, I acknowledge that such is very likely to occur, sooner than later, under the prevailing conditions of the public's deprivation and consequent desperation. If such bloodshed does occur, it will be between the people, who can psychologically take no more abuse, and the "classic goons" and "mercenaries", hired by those determined to steal anything of value which the people have left. Mere ideology of the mentally stable rarely lead to the kind of bloodshed which you reference.
P.S. While I support the right to bear arms, and encourage all to do so, to protect ourselves from rogue governments, I personally do not yet own a gun or any weapon. But I am considering acquiring one.Since posting a commentary on the question of whether legislators should be held... more-

NY Times Report: Fracked water thousands of times more dangerous than they are telling us
Good old hydrofracking. You know about it right? It's the method to produce natural gas by fracturing rock formations with millions of gallons of water and toxic chemicals. It's been contaminating groundwater in the Western US for many years and now it is being pursued with a vengeance in the East, particularity with respect to the Marcellus Shale formation that extends across Pennsylvania and New York.
Everyone in the know has warned us for years that hydrofracking was highly dangerous to sources of groundwater used for human consumption. But only now are we being told how much worse is that contamination of our water supplies. So bad it will make you ill after you read this investigative report from the NY Times:
With hydrofracking, a well can produce over a million gallons of wastewater that is often laced with highly corrosive salts, carcinogens like benzene and radioactive elements like radium, all of which can occur naturally thousands of feet underground. Other carcinogenic materials can be added to the wastewater by the chemicals used in the hydrofracking itself.
While the existence of the toxic wastes has been reported, thousands of internal documents obtained by The New York Times from the Environmental Protection Agency, state regulators and drillers show that the dangers to the environment and health are greater than previously understood.
The documents reveal that the wastewater, which is sometimes hauled to sewage plants not designed to treat it and then discharged into rivers that supply drinking water, contains radioactivity at levels higher than previously known, and far higher than the level that federal regulators say is safe for these treatment plants to handle.
In short, if your source of drinking water is a water plant that receives treated waste water from hydrofracking operations, your health and the health of your children and your neighbors and everyone else you know is at serious risk, a risk far greater than previously acknowledged by the oil and gas industry and federal regulators.
The Industry has known of these problems for many years, as has the EPA, as the documents shown to the NY Times reporters demonstrate. Yet neither the Industry nor the EPA has acted on those reports. Instead, both have turned a blind eye to the fact that waste water from hydrofracking is hazardous to your health. Indeed, since 2006, beginning with the Bush administration, the EPA told hydrofracking operators in Pennsaylvania that they did not need to test the the waste water that was released for radioactivity.
Astonishing, but true. Your government, politicians and the Oil and Gas Industry collaborated in a conspiracy of silence regarding the safety of using hydrofracking techniques to produce natural gas. As one alarmed expert stated:
“We’re burning the furniture to heat the house,” said John H. Quigley, who left last month as secretary of Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. “In shifting away from coal and toward natural gas, we’re trying for cleaner air, but we’re producing massive amounts of toxic wastewater with salts and naturally occurring radioactive materials, and it’s not clear we have a plan for properly handling this waste.”
The risks are particularly severe in Pennsylvania, which has seen a sharp increase in drilling, with roughly 71,000 active gas wells, up from about 36,000 in 2000. The level of radioactivity in the wastewater has sometimes been hundreds or even thousands of times the maximum allowed by the federal standard for drinking water.

Hundreds of Millions Infected with Dodgy Vaccines?
If the allegations of the man who developed the poliomyelitis vaccine programme for a large pharmaceutical company are true, hundreds of millions of people may be doomed. This man was none other than Maurice Hilleman, who developed eight of the fourteen vaccines used in vaccination schedules.
Measles, mumps, rubella, Marek's disease, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, adenoviruses, and the commercial evolution of vaccines against meningococci and pneumococci were the diseases targeted by the pioneering American microbiologist Dr. Maurice Hilleman.
During his research however, in 1991 he became seriously worried about the levels of mercury being used in one of his vaccines. In an internal memo presented to the head of the vaccine division at Merck, where he worked, he called attention to the DPT, a combination for diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus, claiming that the exposure for a six-month-old was 87 times too high.
Moreover, in his interview in the book The Health Century (later a PBS TV series), he made shocking allegations that Merck had produced and distributed deadly viruses in its vaccines and had infected millions of people worldwide, turning them into time bombs.
In his article on these allegations*, US researcher Terrence Aym claims: "If his allegations are true, hundreds of millions may be doomed to early, painful deaths. The masses that have already been inoculated may be little better than walking dead men and women-zombies going through the motions of life with no knowledge that biological time bombs are slowly ticking away in their tainted, diseased cells".
Among the allegations was that the poliomyelitis vaccine may have been infected by monkey viruses, an allegation backed up by The Lancet, a prestigious medical journal, in 2002, in an article which claimed that 55,000 cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma which occurred annually had their root in the vaccine. The cause was the SV40 cancer-causing monkey virus.
In its turn this information, according to Aym's research, was backed up by Dr. Michele Carbone of Loyola University, who found "the virus SV40-a virus never before seen in humans-was present in about 50 percent of the human lung tumors he studied".
"Other researchers rushed to confirm or challenge the study he published about the deeply disturbing find. Since 1964 60 laboratory studies were conducted. Every study confirms Carbone's original findings. But the new research found more. Much more.
Deadly, virulent cancers".

Mubarak and Ben Ali: What Would Tacitus say?
So the story is that Mubarak and Ben Ali are now both desperately ill -- indeed, it is said, in a coma. And there have been a handful of sharp comments, wondering what the "Deposed Dictator Syndrome" (DDS) actually is -- and how convenient it might be as a protective device against assassination.
I couldn't help thinking how Roman it all looked. There is a whole series of similar scenarios, brilliantly concocted by the brilliant Tacitus (I say 'concocted' because he cant possibly have known what went on). They are all centred on the grimy last moments of autocrats and dictators.
The basic rule for Tacitus is that despots don't die a natural death. In the midst of a power struggle they get smothered or poisoned, while the word is put out that they have been struck down by some nasty illness. Alternatively, they have long died (and this is more the 'Soviet president scenario'), while the word is put out that he is still hanging on to life -- until the new emperor is ready to be presented to the troops and the people. Livy even manages to retroject this scenario to the earliest kings of Rome, and has Tanaquil easing Servius Tullius onto the throne, by carefully managing the death of Tarquinius Priscus. (And it is the emperor Tiberius at the top of this post.)
It's not hard to invent what Tacitus might have to say about the roles of Susan Mubarak, Gamal, Alaa, Suleiman -- and a few strategically placed pillows and poisoned mushrooms. There is a difference though. Tacitus' stories were all about ensuring the succession of some favoured, or not so favoured, son. Whatever family disputes went on before these guys decided to cave in, they have presumably given up all hope of imperial style dynasty. Here the aim is presumably to avoid (as DDS has it) the assassin's bullet -- or to ensure the succession of the wealth, even if not the political office itself.
Let illness take its course.

More than 200 Chinese children poisoned by lead
BEIJING (Reuters) – More than 200 Chinese children have been poisoned by lead from battery plants located too close to houses in the east of the country, state media said on Thursday, the latest in a string of heavy metal pollution cases.
After tests last month showed three children in Gaohe in Anhui province had elevated levels of lead in their blood, 280 others were subsequently checked, more than 200 of whom were found to have been poisoned, Xinhua news agency said.
Authorities have now closed both battery plants blamed for the poisoning, the report said.
One of the plants was separated from residences in Gaohe by only a narrow road, it added, in contravention of environmental protection guidelines.
Some of the children affected were just a few months old, the official news agency said.
"When she was a baby, she stayed with my in-laws in Changsha, of the central Hunan Province, and was perfectly healthy. She's been in Gaohe town for just a few months," resident Jiang Feng told Xinhua of her poisoned child.
Lead poisoning, which often builds up slowly as a result of repeated exposure to small amounts of lead, can damage various parts of the body including the nervous and reproductive systems and the kidneys, and it can cause high blood pressure and anemia.
Lead is especially harmful to the developing brains of young children and can cause consequences that may be irreversible including learning difficulties and behavioral problems.
China's environment ministry has called for urgent measures to tackle heavy metal poisoning as cases of mass poisoning created widespread public anger.
In 2009, protesters broke into a smelting works they blamed for the lead poisoning of more than 600 children, smashing trucks and tearing down fences.BEIJING (Reuters) – More than 200 Chinese children have been poisoned by lead... more-

"Super-toxic" rat poisons kill owls, other wildlife
Owls are dying under gruesome circumstances, bleeding to death from stomach hemorrhages in an agonizing and days-long decline. The culprit: An extra-potent class of rodenticides that has flooded the market in recent decades. Six of 164 dead barn owls, barred owls and great horned owls in a western Canada study had pesticide levels high enough to kill them outright, while readings in up to 30 percent of the others appeared toxic and seemed likely to handicap owls. The study is the latest evidence amassed by researchers that poses an unsettling question: Are we willing to poison owls and a variety of other wild animals in order to fight rats?
December 13, 2010
Part 1 of 2
VANCOUVER, British Columbia – With the spooky glow of his headlamp illuminating an antenna in his hand, Paul Levesque stalks one of Canada’s last remaining barn owls.
“Are you getting anything?” research team leader Sofi Hindmarch asks over a walkie-talkie.
“I got it!” Levesque responds. Then a few seconds later, dejected, he radios back: “No. I lost the signal.”
Working in darkness, with the quarter-moon obscured by clouds, these two scientists are trying to figure out what an elusive, radio-collared owl is eating along this country road just beyond the suburbs that ring Vancouver. Their mission is to determine whether the decline of Canada’s barn owl is tied, in part, to super-toxic rat poisons.
Scientists know that at least some owls are dying under gruesome circumstances, bleeding to death from stomach hemorrhages in an agonizing and days-long decline. The culprit: An extra-potent class of rat poisons that has flooded the market in recent decades, designed to more effectively kill rats, a food source for the owls.

Pesticide readings in 15 percent to 30 percent of the others appeared toxic and seemed likely to handicap owls in a variety of ways, scientists say.
The study is the latest evidence amassed by researchers that poses an unsettling question: Are we willing to poison owls and a variety of other wild animals in order to fight rats?
“We’re finding this stuff all over the place,” said John Elliott, an Environment Canada scientist who co-authored the owl study published last year. “There’s a lot more rodenticide in the food chain than we would have ever thought. We’re surprised that there’s that much of the stuff kicking around.”
Studies in Canada, the United States and Europe show that this newer generation of rat poisons is killing a variety of wild animals, including mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, foxes, skunks, deer, squirrels, possums and raccoons, along with bald eagles, golden eagles, owls, hawks and vultures.
Hundreds of wildlife poisoning deaths have been documented. In the United States, and the pesticides have been found in hundreds of animals, according to a 2006 memo by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency biologist Bill Erickson. Two years earlier, he documented more than 300 incidents of wild animals suspected of being killed by the chemicals.
“Clearly, more information is urgently needed on the potential impacts such exposure may be having on populations” of raptors and other wild animals, Erickson wrote.
Erickson’s memo was part of a years-long process at EPA that resulted in 2008 in new rules to better control the rat poisons. In June of 2011 those rules go into effect, although they did not go as far as desired by some wildlife advocates, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The chemicals in question are known as anti-coagulants because they prevent an animal’s blood from clotting or coagulating. The first of these, synthesized in the 1940s, is known as warfarin – the same chemical sold in miniscule concentrations to people as Coumadin, a prescription blood thinner.
This barn owl study is the latest evidence amassed by researchers that poses an unsettling question: Are we willing to poison owls and a variety of other wild animals in order to fight rats? The new strain of rat poisons came along in the 1970s. The reason: Warfarin and its cousins required the rats to return to feed on the pesticide over the course of several days. With the newer versions, only a single dose is needed, although it might take five days or more to do the job. Brand names include Havoc, Talon, Contrac, Maki, Ratimus and d-CON Mouse Pruf II.
Some animals are ingesting the pesticides by eating poisoned rats as the rats stagger about, dazed but not yet dead. This goes on for days before the rats succumb, in the meantime making them easy targets for owls and other predators.
But there’s a mysterious wrinkle in this picture. How are plant eaters like deer and sheep ingesting rat poison? Grain eaters like squirrels? What about hawks that subsist almost exclusively on songbirds – songbirds that probably aren’t eating rats?
Scientists wonder: Just how far into the food web have these poisons penetrated?

Fluoride in Water Linked to Lower IQ in Children
Is this the end of water fluoridation?
PR Newswire
December 21, 2010
NEW YORK, Dec. 21, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Exposure to fluoride may lower children’s intelligence says a study pre-published in Environmental Health Perspectives, a publication of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (online December 17, 2010).
Fluoride is added to 70% of U.S. public drinking water supplies.
According to Paul Connett, Ph.D., director of the Fluoride Action Network, “This is the 24th study that has found this association, but this study is stronger than the rest because the authors have controlled for key confounding variables and in addition to correlating lowered IQ with levels of fluoride in the water, the authors found a correlation between lowered IQ and fluoride levels in children’s blood. This brings us closer to a cause and effect relationship between fluoride exposure and brain damage in children.”

Tap Water In At Least 31 US Citues Contaminated With Hexavalent Chromium
Millions of Americans in at least 31 U.S. cities could be drinking tap water contaminated with the harmful chemical hexavalent chromium, according to a report released Monday by the non-profit Environmental Working Group.
While the dangerous carcinogen, otherwise known as chromium-6, may sound foreign to most people, perhaps the name Erin Brockovich will ring a bell....
==========
"Bottled water is not necessarily any safer than tap water," said Sutton. "We just don't have any guarantee that hexavalent chromium isn't in that water."
===========
"The National Toxicology Program has said that chromium-6 in drinking water shows "clear evidence of carcinogenic activity."

Uncle Sam Has Too Much Gas - US To Export Natural Gas - Posisioning Citizens For Profit
The U.S. is starting to supply gas to Europe. The surplus of domestic production and the active procurement of LNG in Qatar allowed the country to re-export gas using the so-called arbitrage transactions which means transferring purchased gas to new buyers. The first gas transport will come to the UK this weekend.
The re-export of gas to Europe from the U.S. indicates that shale gas is having an increasing impact on the global gas market. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the excess supply may cause gas suppliers to reduce prices.
In February, Gazprom postponed the project of the production of LNG at the giant Shtokman field in the Barents Sea, and one of the reasons for it was the fact that the target market - United States - does not need additional supplies.
On October 11, the Financial Times released a promise that in the next five years, the U.S. could become a major supplier of gas and compete with Russia and Middle Eastern countries in the Asia Pacific region. As noted in the comments by an employee of consultancy PFC Energy Nikos Tsafos, if the Americans would have supplied at least 10% of gas produced, they would become the market leader.
In 2009 the U.S. produced 620 billion cubic meters of gas, which is almost 40 billion more than Russia. Now the share of shale fuels in total gas production in America, according to the Energy Department of the U.S., is 15%.
The U.S. is the largest producer of shale gas in the world. In one year, gas production from unconventional sources, mainly from shale deposits, has jumped by 30 billion cubic meters. America's need in the imported liquefied gas has dropped sharply, and its price has dropped more than two-fold.
The closure of the U.S. gas market for imports hit the producers in other countries. In February of 2010, Gazprom has postponed the project for the production of LNG from the giant Shtokman field in the Barents Sea, including the fact that the U.S. target market is no longer in need of additional supplies.
Naturally, the world's LNG producers that were focused on the U.S. market rushed to Europe, which increased the competition on the continent. In the U.S. gas prices have collapsed precisely because of the oversupply of natural gas.
Therefore, shale gas companies that have licenses for the extraction of expensive gas are trying to jump on the external market within the US. In June, plans to export LNG were announced by the company Cheniere Energy, the operator of an import terminal in Louisiana. If all goes according to the plan, this company will be able to deliver gas from the United States around the world starting 2015. From the U.S. west coast shipments to Asia are carried out by Kenai. The U.S. is starting to supply gas to Europe. The surplus of domestic production and... more-
