When it comes time to buy new furniture, many experts feel it's worth a little extra effort to find PBDE-free options. Most products aren't labeled as such, so you'll have to ask questions at the store (or even call the manufacturer) to find out whether or not an item contains PBDEs. As a general rule, pieces made of natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and hemp don't catch fire easily or burn quickly, and so are less likely to be treated. When it comes time to buy new furniture, many experts feel it's worth a little... more

Perhaps any other 77-year-old would simply retire and step back from a battle with a multi-million dollar agricultural company. Not Percy Schmeiser.
A keynote speaker at Canada's largest outdoor organics festival on July 5 and 6, Schmeiser cautioned listeners about the lure and hazards of genetically engineered (GE) crops.
The Saskatchewan farmer spoke at the Organic Islands Festival in Victoria before an audience well aware of his efforts and tribulations.
Schmeiser's regionally adapted canola, which he had researched for 50 years, became contaminated with airborne pollen from fields containing Roundup Ready, one of Monsanto's product lines.
He took Monsanto all the way to Canada's Supreme Court after the agro-chemical company sued him for using its product without purchasing it. Schmeiser claimed he had never used the product. The Supreme Court found in Monsanto's favor because their Roundup Ready canola was protected by a patent.
However, in an out-of-court settlement finalized in March, Monsanto agreed to pay all the clean-up costs of the Roundup Ready canola that contaminated Schmeiser's fields, and the court ruled that Monsanto can be sued again if contamination on his fields recurs.
Throughout the several court cases, Schmeiser stood firm in his belief that once GE organisms are released into the environment, there will be "no calling back" the genie.
Schmeiser says that selection and husbandry have been a cornerstone of agriculture since the first organized harvests. In the last 100 years, the use of science to modify the characteristics of a plant or animal has been instrumental in increased tonnage per hectare.
While the Green Revolution of the 1960s and '70s resulted in improved harvest levels, these results often came at the cost of substantial inputs of pesticides, herbicides, and oil-based technology.
In many countries, this proved a disastrous combination, impoverishing the soils, farmers, and whole countries, says Schmeiser.
Genetically modified crops need a significant increase in proprietary chemicals. Super-chemical Roundup, for example, is reported to be four times stronger today because of new active ingredients, he claims.
He adds that Agent Orange, known from the Vietnam War, is emerging as a component in new GE foods offered by some agro-chemical companies.

Witnesses linked a highly toxic chemical, sodium dichromate, to illnesses reported by soldiers and workers at an Iraq plant. KBR, the lead contractor on the Qarmat Ali project and one of the largest defense contractors in Iraq was accused of knowingly exposing solders to the chemical, during a senate hearing yesterday.
"These soldiers were bleeding from the nose, spitting blood,” said Danny Langford, an equipment technician from Texas brought to work at the Qarmat Ali Water treatment plant in 2003. “They were sick.”
Even the smallest exposure to sodium dichromate, an orange powdery substance, can cause cancer. The liver and the immune system may also be suppressed.
"Edward Blacke, who served as KBR’s health, safety, and environmental coordinator for the Qarmat Ali project, said he saw soldiers with “continuous bloody noses, spitting up of blood, coughing, irritation of the noses, eyes, throat, and lungs, shortness of breath.”
The Pentagon and KBR dismiss the charges claiming everyone will be fine.

It's been obvious to me for decades that the people who sit in the hot seat (Clinton, Blair, Bush) don't really make any decisions or run the country. There is a far more powerful and sinister group behind everything that happens in the world - the skyrocketing price of gas and food, the poisoning of our food with high fructose corn syrup, fat, salt and sugar, chemicals, bioengineering, genetic manipuplation. My theory is the power people tried to control the masses with street drugs for a while and realized it costs too much to control the crime that spun out from them. So, now they'll just keep us fat, lazy and in a haze with junk food and no nutrients to feed our brains and bodies - and many folks are fine with that - eat KFC, McBuggers, candy, coloa and sit in a vegetative state in front of the computer or TV. This makes it so much easier to keep us quiet and in control.

A family of 6 in California became the first recipients in the United States of an intravenous milk thistle (Silybum marianum, Asteraceae) fruit (seed) extract to treat mushroom poisoning in January of 2007. The US Food and Drug Administration permitted emergency use of the drug Legalon Sil® (Madaus Pharma, Brussels; div. of Madaus AG, Cologne, Germany) for the patients, and 5 of the victims survived the poisoning.
Legalon extract, the world’s first pharmaceutical-grade milk thistle extract, is made from the fruits (often called seeds) of milk thistle, standardized to 80% flavonolignans (silibinin [silybin], silydianin, and silychristin). Numerous published animal studies and human clinical trials have shown that milk thistle extract is safe, has antioxidant properties, assists in regeneration of RNA (ribonucleic acid) in the liver to create new hepatocytes, and eliminates toxins from the liver. The leaves of milk thistle, native to the Mediterranean area, have been used both as an edible plant and as a liver remedy in traditional medicine since Greco-Roman times.

"The FDA has, for decades, ridiculously insisted that mercury fillings pose no health threat whatsoever to children. While dismissing hundreds of studies showing a clear link between mercury amalgam fillings ("silver fillings") and disastrous neurological effects in the human body, the FDA denied the truth about mercury and effectively protected the mercury filling racket that has brought so much harm to so many people. For over a hundred years, a cabal of "mercury mongers" made up of the American Dental Association, mercury filling manufacturers and indignant dentists have reaped windfall profits by implanting toxic fillings into the mouths of children, all while insisting that mercury - one of the most toxic heavy metals known to modern science - posed no health threat whatsoever.
Today, that reign of toxicity is about to end. Thanks to the tireless, multi-year efforts of people like Charles Brown, National Counsel for Consumers for Dental Choice (www.ToxicTeeth.org), the FDA has now been forced to acknowledge a fact so fundamental that, by any measure of honest science, it should have adopted the position decades ago. What position is that? Simply that mercury is toxic to humans.
The FDA's stonewalling on this issue has been nothing less than a circus of politically-motivated denials, much like the Big Tobacco executives swearing under oath that "Nicotine is not addictive." In similar style, the FDA insisted for decades that "Mercury is not toxic." Both statements, as any sane person can readily conclude, are the outbursts of lunatics. Sadly, those lunatics somehow remain in charge of our nation's food, drugs and cosmetics (and dental care), meaning that any real progress to protect the People must come from outside the FDA.
And that's exactly what just happened. Consumers for Dental Choice teamed up with Moms Against Mercury (www.MomsAgainstMercury.org) to sue the FDA and its commissioner whose name sounds like an evil-minded villian right out of a Marvel comic book: Von Eschenbach. The lawsuit, entitled, Moms Against Mercury et al. v. Von Eschenbach, Commissioner, et al was concluded earlier this week with a reluctant agreement by the FDA to both change its website on the issue of mercury and to reclassify mercury within one year, following a period of public comment (which the agency will no doubt try to drag out as long as possible in order to avoid actually sticking to the terms of the lawsuit agreement).
Remarkably, the FDA's website no longer claims mercury is harmless. The language has now been changed in dramatic fashion, reading: "Dental amalgams contain mercury, which may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and fetus."
There's still a lot of fudging there. Note the careful use of the word "may," which means the FDA still isn't sure whether mercury is neurotoxic, but it might be. This is the FDA's way of continuing to stonewall this issue, even as it lost its lawsuit. For any FDA officials who don't yet think mercury is toxic to the human nervous system, I invite them to chug a few milliliters of the substance themselves and find out what the effects might be. It certainly couldn't make them any more mad than they are already!"

About 350 people fled their homes in northern Japan on Thursday to escape poisonous fumes released by a neighbor who killed himself by mixing detergent and other chemicals—the latest in a series of such suicides.
The panic in Otaru came just hours after national police urged Internet providers to crack down on websites spurring a wave of detergent-related suicides in which 50 people have reportedly died in the past month.
The rash of such suicides in Japan—which already has one of the world’s highest suicide rates—has triggered widespread concern because the powerful fumes can seriously harm bystanders and rescuers.
In Otaru, on the northern island of Hokkaido, a 24-year-old man mixed the chemicals in his house after midnight. He died and the gas—hydrogen sulfide—escaped his home, and neighbors were alerted by the smell, a Hokkaido police official said.
The man’s 58-year-old mother, who was apparently overcome by the fumes, was found unconscious nearby and was taken to a hospital. Police said she was recovering.
About 350 neighbors fled to a nearby school playground where they stayed for about two hours until the fumes dispersed, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.
Last week at least 90 people were sickened by fumes in southwestern Japan when a teenage girl killed herself by mixing laundry detergent with cleanser in her apartment.
Alarmed by the wave of detergent suicides, the National Police Agency urged Internet providers Wednesday to delete materials from websites showing readers how to mix the chemicals, officials said Thursday. Some sites reportedly provide “poison gas” warnings that viewers can print out and hang outside their doors when they kill themselves.
The police request was the first action against the detergent suicides taken by the Japanese government, which has announced the goal of cutting the suicide rate by 20% in 10 years by reducing unemployment, boosting workplace counseling and filtering websites that promote suicide.
Reports said more than 50 people have killed themselves by inhaling hydrogen sulfide in the past month. Police say they have yet to compile data on such deaths.
Seiji Yoshikawa, deputy head of the Internet Hot Line, which operates under the guidelines of police, said the number of sites promoting detergent suicides soared in April.
“They are rife on the Internet. Writing examples include ‘you can die easily and beautifully’ and ‘this is much easier than charcoal-burning suicide,” Yoshikawa said, referring to a once-popular suicide method.
Hydrogen sulfide gas is colorless and characterized by an odor similar to that of rotten eggs. When inhaled, it can lead to suffocation or brain damage.
Annual suicides in Japan passed the 30,000 mark in 1998, near the height of an economic slump that left many bankrupt, jobless and desperate.
A total of 32,155 people killed themselves in 2006, giving the country the ninth highest suicide rate in the world, according to the government.

Hear, see and read why every one should do something to stop mercury pollution from coal-fired electric plants and oppose the new $2 billion dollar Desert Rock Power Plant proposed for the Navajo Nation in the Four Corners area of the United States.
Make sure to click the link to OneEarthBlog for a more in depth exploration of this crucial issue, the impact of mercury pollution on the environment and the human brain, the scientific explanation of the causal connection between neuro-toxins like mercury and autism and other neurological disease, as well as solutions and calls to paradigm changes to change values to survive by indigenous leaders.
We've included videos of Dine leaders, scientist experts on neuro-toxins and the brain, Winona LaDuke speaking in Shiprock against Desert Rock Power Plant and about how much renewable energy the $2 billion dollar cost of the plant could bring the Four Corners.
There are links to government reports on how the Four Corners area was just named the biggest air polluter in the country, worse than our major cities New York, Chicago and LA. And information about how mercury emissions have increased and how mercury affects the environment and human health.
Watch the video of Jenny McCarthy where she explains how she discovered that mercury in vaccines and the environment caused her son's autism, and how she helped him, and today, he no longer fits the definition of autism.
Make sure to get to the bottom of the blog, so you don't miss the video of the elders talking about the paradigm shift we need back to indigenous thinking so human beings are brought back into balance with the earth. Onondaga Faithkeeper and Chief Oren Lyons talks about how we need value change for survival. "You've got to make the decisions for the seventh generation. That's not just a casual term, that's a real instruction for survival."
Indian leaders and grandmothers know from our oral traditions that this is not the first time in America that the actions of human beings have threatened our environment. There are many stories in our traditions that explain how people faced crisis when their actions were out of harmony with natural law. eg the Navajo emergence story.
Our indigenous leaders have lots to teach all Americans and world citizens about how to live in balance on the earth without destroying our home.
Spread the word.

Call to Canadians to stop uranium mining in Ottawa and throughout Canada.
Americans in the U.S. also must oppose the poisoning of earth, water, and air from uranium mining.
This is a crucial environmental justice issue and a people of color and class issue, since uranium mines, toxic waste dumps, nuclear and dirty coal power plants are located disproportionately on Indian reservations and in poor communities which are overwhelmingly comprised of people of color.
But radiation knows no national or racial boundaries. Cancer crosses state lines and country borders and affects all races and economic groups.
We need to unite on this issue because we share one earth and have to stop poisoning our home.

Not wanting to be outdone by his band mate Brett Michaels, Poison drummer Rikki Rockett has finally found himself back in the spotlight. Only this time, its not in the best light. Rockett was arrested yesterday in Los Angeles on an outstanding warrant for allegedly raping someone in Mississippi. As shocking as it may be that a person wouldn’t want to have consensual sex with this aging, so-very-awesomely-named drummer for an 80’s hair band, Rikki Rapestt deserves whatever punishment is headed his way, if for no other reason than my having to look at this photo and imagine the nightmare scenario of him trying to drunkenly thrust himself upon somebody whilst slurring, “Come on, honey! I did the beats for ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’.”

Not only will High Fructose Corn Syrup make you fat while destroying your liver, it is also really bad for the environment. The genetically modified corn used to produce HFCS requires more pesticides and chemical fertilizers than natural corn. It is also not a crop that is rotated, which severely depletes top soil quality.
Once you've decided to eliminate HFCS from your diet, label reading becomes essential. HFCS creeps into food you would not expect to see it, like ketchup and yogurt. Start writing manufacturers, such as Heinz, and tell them you no longer purchase their products because they contain high-fructose corn syrup.

Despite a corn biodiversity unparalleled in the world, Mexico bowed down to companies like Monsanto, allowing genetically modified corn to be grown. The risks are plentiful for a diverse systems such as Mexico's. Naturally occurring corn can be "genetically polluted" by the new genetically modified strains permanently destroying the original.
Furthermore, "Transgenic crops are not safe, and we will lose our sovereignty, because the GM seeds belong to just a few transnational corporations," Miguel Colunga, leader of the Democratic Campesino Front of Chihuahua, a state in northern Mexico said.
IPS reports, "Using seeds patented by companies like Monsanto forces farmers to buy seed every planting season, paying the corporations each time, and puts an end to thousands of years of the traditional practice of saving the best seeds from the harvest to use for the next sowing. "
Mexicans and environmentalists have been fighting Monsanto and other U.S. based companies for three years.
Not only is the environment in danger, but humans who consume the transgenic food put themselves at risk, "transgenic MON-863 maize, belonging to Monsanto, which was authorized for human consumption in Mexico, harmed rats in experiments, according to a confidential report by the company itself which was made public in 2005 by a court order."Despite a corn biodiversity unparalleled in the world, Mexico bowed down to companies... more

Lack of services, no electricity, polluted water, toxic land and rivers, and a population held under colonial rule. This is the PNAC definition of 'Democracy.' Our Founding Fathers would never have stood for this. I can't even begin to express my feelings about this after five years. The pain and sorrow that has been caused by this wreckless immoral and llegal action will forever render America a soulless country by our inaction to rectify it. Even should we pull all the troops out the damage to this land and its people is now complete. And this Congress should be ashamed of how it has conducted itself in allowing this occupation to go on as innocent people continue to be caught up in the crossfire. I hope someday the people of Iraq will be able to forgive us.Lack of services, no electricity, polluted water, toxic land and rivers, and a... more

Iraq: Two of the victims, both children, died after eating cake laced with the poison thallium, after it was delivered to a military club in Baghdad. Others are being treated in hospital in the Jordanian capital, Amman. It is the first time the deadly toxin has been used since the downfall of Saddam Hussein, whose regime used it to kill its opponents. It is an ideal assassin's tool, being tasteless and easy to administer, and its effects take some time to appear. It then causes a lingering and painful death, but an antidote known as Prussian Blue can be effective if taken quickly. An investigation is under way in Baghdad, but the affair remains shrouded in mystery. The manager of the air force club told the BBC he believed it was carried out by conspirators with a grudge against the club's administration.Iraq: Two of the victims, both children, died after eating cake laced with the poison... more
