WASHINGTON (AP) - Unmanned aircraft have proved their usefulness and reliability in the war zones of Afghanistan and Iraq. Now the pressure's on to allow them in the skies over the United States.
The Federal Aviation Administration has been asked to issue flying rights for a range of pilotless planes to carry out civilian and law-enforcement functions but has been hesitant to act. Officials are worried that they might plow into airliners, cargo planes and corporate jets that zoom around at high altitudes, or helicopters and hot air balloons that fly as low as a few hundred feet off the ground.
On top of that, these pilotless aircraft come in a variety of sizes. Some are as big as a small airliner, others the size of a backpack. The tiniest are small enough to fly through a house window.

So, about a year ago I reported on drones in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Somalia and stated that it was only a matter of time before they have them flying our 'friendly' skies, but I was called a "crazy, tin-foil nutter," but that's ok...I've done the research and knowledge is power.
Today, drones are mostly used for blowing women and children to bits by some pimple-faced geek with a PlayStation controller, but don't worry, they don't want to kill you. LOL

Union and BA talks failed to find an agreement over the weekend, which means the proposed five day BA cabin crew strike started last night. The negotiations saw many odd moments like the meeting being tweeted by Derek Simpson and SWP protesters storming the Acas building which disrupted the talks at a important moment.
Last night Unite offered the stop the strikes if staff travel perks were returned, but BA refused.
"BA has said it plans to fly more than 60,000 customers a day during the strike, operating 60% of long-haul flights and 50% of short-haul services from Heathrow. [...] Numerous BA cabin crew members rely on travel perks - where they pay 10% of normal fares - to commute to work from UK cities outside London, or even from mainland Europe."-BBCUnion and BA talks failed to find an agreement over the weekend, which means the... more

Sounds like the ban is over, so after some chaos the sky will be filled with flights again and taxi drivers can start earning on airport drives again.
The reaction to the ban sounded mixed, with the industry losing £130 million a day, lots of people stranded and the carbon count dropping. However, after the ban is lifted some papers are asking if the ban was necessary...or that by lifting the ban flights might be at risk.
"Willie Walsh, chief executive of British Airways, said "lessons can be learned" from the handling of the event and added: "I don't believe it was necessary to impose a blanket ban on all UK airspace last Thursday.
Air traffic control company Nats insisted it faced no political pressure to ease the restrictions."We don't feel we have been under pressure from the Government," said spokesman Alex Bristol. "Where the pressure has come has been to better understand the safety implications.""-Evening StandardSounds like the ban is over, so after some chaos the sky will be filled with flights... more

Airlines will lose at least $200m (£130m) per day in revenues as a result of the volcanic ash-linked disruption, the industry's governing body has said.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said its members would also lose further money as a result of expensive contingency plans.
Meanwhile accountants KPMG said it expected UK flights alone to cost airlines in excess of £200m per day.
ok so a few things dont make sense here, airlines said they had to up their prices for arious reasons, such being the rise in fuel costs, and the new green tax, how exactly does £200 million a day not easily cover this cost (oh wait, it probably barely covers the CEO's wages)
another being, the seriousness of the matter if these airlines are truly losing this money, it wouldnt hurt to spend a further few million on some sort of machine that can either blast or evaporate the volcanic dust away? if such a technology exists that is, which i'm pretty sure it might.

A passenger on a broken-down Thomas Cook jet fixed the aircraft, causing the flight to be only 35 minutes late arriving at its destination instead of the eight hours predicted by the airline.
When the captain announced that the plane had a technical fault and a qualified engineer would likely have to be flown in to deal with the situation, a passeger notified cabin crew members that he was qualified. After checking his credentials, Thomas Cook allowed him to work on the Boeing 757-200.
