Pope paves way to beatification of John Paul II
Pope Benedict XVI has formally approved a miracle attributed to his late predecessor, paving the way to John Paul II's beatification on 1 May.
The process of beatification, or declaring the late pontiff to be "blessed", is a crucial step towards making him a saint.
John Paul II died in 2005 after a papacy of nearly 27 years.
The Vatican credits him with the miraculous cure of a nun said to have had Parkinson's Disease.
Church officials believe that the Polish pope, who himself suffered from the condition, interceded for the miraculous cure of Sister Marie Simon-Pierre, a Frenchwoman in her late forties.
She has said her illness inexplicably disappeared two months after John Paul II's death, after she and her fellow nuns had prayed to him.
Church-appointed doctors agreed that there was no medical explanation for the curing of the nun, although last year there were some doubts about the validity of the miracle.
A Polish newspaper said that a doctor who scrutinised the nun's case had concluded that she might have been suffering not from Parkinson's, but from a nervous disorder from which temporary recovery is medically possible.
Million expected
Up to a million people are expected to gather in Rome for the beatification.
Mourners at John Paul II's funeral on 8 April 2005 chanted: "Santo subito!" - or "Make him a saint right now!"
The following month, Pope Benedict put him on a fast track to sainthood by dispensing with Church rules that normally impose a five-year waiting period after a candidate's death before the beatification procedure can start.
Work is under way in St Peter's Basilica to make space for John Paul II's tomb since, in accordance with tradition, the remains of popes who are beatified are moved up from the crypt to the nave.
"John Paul II's coffin will be moved in St Peter's Basilica from the Vatican crypt without being opened," said Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi.
His body will not be displayed but placed in a tomb under a simple marble stone reading "Beatus Ioannes Paulus II" (Blessed John Paul II).
In order for John Paul II to be canonised as a saint, a second miracle would have to be verified following the beatification.

After The ABC News Debacle: How To Change Media - Why Making Media The Issue Is Crucial For Saving Democracy
by Danny Schechter
That Pope expressed several wishes calling for a greater sense of social responsibility in the media, and for the media, too, saying:
"Promote justice and solidarity according to an organic and correct vision of human development by reporting events accurately and truthfully, analyzing situations and problems completely, and providing a forum for different opinions. An authentically ethical approach to using the powerful communication media must be situated within the context of a mature exercise of freedom and responsibility, founded upon the supreme criteria of truth and justice."
He also spoke about media ownership:
"I would like to recall our attention to the subject of media access, and of co-responsible participation in their administration. If the communications media are a good destined for all humanity, then ever-new means must be found - including recourse to opportune legislative measures - to make possible a true participation in their management by all. The culture of co-responsibility must be nurtured."
Unlike other papal passions, however, implementing this wish cannot rely on faith alone-it will take practical steps.

Da Vinci Code prequel Angels & Demons has become the first blockbuster casualty of the Writers' Guild strike. The film was scheduled go into production in February 2008, but Sony Studio bosses announced on Friday that the project, which was adapted from Dan Brown's book by Da Vinci Code screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, would be put on hold. "While the filmmakers and the studio feel the screenplay is very strong, we do not believe it is the fully-realized production draft required of this ambitious project," said Sony spokesman Steve Elzer. Tom Hanks and Ron Howard had been set to reprise their respective roles as star and director. The much anticipated movie, which was slated for a December 2008 release, is now expected to hit screens in the first quarter of 2009. In the meantime, with Tom Hanks' alter-ego Robert Langdon in shackles, who will defeat the Illuminati and their dastardly plan to blow up the Catholic Church's elite as they meet in the Vatican City to elect a new pope?

It seems the Pope John Paul II is about to make a posthumous debut as a contemporary recording star. On Dec 4th the Universal Music Group will release Santo Subito, which the producers claim is the first music DVD to embody the voice and the images of John Paul II.
The DVD is a montage of footage set to music by film composer Simon Boswell, whose previous credits include Shallow Grave, Hackers, and Michael Hoffmans 1999 retelling of A Midsummer Nights Dream. The composer mixes classical scoring with trip-hop and jazz-trance, drawing on radio archives of the Pope speaking and singing, as well as other historical recordings such as Gregorian chants found in the Vaticans vaults.
Boswell told the BBC he was "very nervous about interfering with the pontiff's voice." The composer had to use modern tuning and effects techniques to integrate Pope John Pauls voice into his music which raised "one slight complaint from the Vatican" after all, how can you improve on the infallibility of papal perfection?
"I have felt very moved by doing the thing, and I've almost felt guided or watched over in a way I haven't felt before, said Boswell of the creative process. "I've felt privileged and an empathy towards the subject that I very often don't."
The DVD is part of a greater campaign to speed up the canonization of Pope John Paul, hence the title Santo Subito which means sainthood now. Using the internet to promote the cause, the DVD can be viewed in webisode format via You Tube, and the official Santo Subito website polls visitors on whether theyd like to see instant canonization for the beloved former pope. At the time we checked in, 95% of those who participated in the survey wanted Pope John Paul to be proclaimed a saint immediately, with 61% wanting him to be appointed the patron and protector of young people.
"Seeing the power of his speech, and the millions and millions of people over the world mesmerized by him, I actually felt quite moved. He was saying things that any nice human being couldn't refuse, says Boswell, who is not a Catholic himself. "I can't think of a better person to be made a saint. Why not have saints in the world?"
