Professor Stephen Hawking has revealed his thoughts on communicating with aliens during a radio interview to mark his 70th birthday.
He made the comments in a BBC Radio 4 question and answer session for the Today programme, saying: “The discovery of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe would be the greatest scientific discovery ever. But it would be very risky to attempt to communicate with an alien civilisation.”
Professor Hawking went on to compare the possible encounter with the colonisation of America. “If aliens decided to visit us then the outcome might be similar to when Europeans arrived in Americas. That did not turn out well for the Native Americans.”
Other subjects covered by the listener questions were the laws of physics, whether there was a time in the universe when there was nothing and the possibility of humans living on other planets.
Talking about the future of mankind, Professor Hawking expressed a pragmatic view: “It is possible that the human race could become extinct but it is not inevitable.”
However, the outlook wasn’t entirely positive: “I think it is almost certain that a disaster, such as a nuclear war or global warming, will befall the earth within a thousand years.”

Hold the front page: the big bang was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics. Or indeed, as the front page of the London Times put it: "Hawking: God did not create universe". Media furore over Stephen Hawking's new book, The Grand Design, has made it the biggest science news story of the day. But it's not like Hawking has suddenly given up a religious belief – let alone proved that God doesn't exist. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/submit-an-article/3961-stephen-hawkingHold the front page: the big bang was an inevitable consequence of the laws of... more

A wormhole exists at the center of a black hole. Wormholes would allow travel from one part of the universe to another part of that same universe very quickly or would allow travel from one universe to another. All around us are tiny doors that lead to the rest of the Universe. Predicted by Einstein's equations, these quantum wormholes offer a faster-than-light short cut to the rest of the cosmos - at least in principle. Now physicists believe they could open these doors wide enough to allow someone to travel through. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/submit-an-article/364-wormholeA wormhole exists at the center of a black hole. In a major breakthrough, neurologists are reporting that they can decipher neurological impulses into speech with an 80% accuracy. A paralyzed man who is incapable of speech has electrodes implanted in his brain which detect the electrical pulses in the brain relating to speech. These signals are then fed into computers which covert these pulses into signals suitable for speech synthesis. As a biotech marvel, this is astonishing. Depending on the rate of development it is possible to imagine Professor Hawking migrating to this, as it would be immune to any further loss of body movement and would vastly accelerate his ability to talk. On the flip-side, direct brain I/O is also a major step towards William Gibson's Neuromancer and other cyberpunk dark futures.
