ITV are set to announce a new record-breaking deal with Virgin Media that will see a plethora of the UK's favourite TV shows made available via ITV's on-demand catch up service, ITV Player.
Some might say that this has been long overdue, given Channel 4 and the BBC's on-demand services have proved so successful, but the new deal will give up to 3.5m customers the opportunity to catch up on such televisual treats as Coronation Street and Emmerdale...
Reports also claim that there will be a selection of ITV HD content made available through the player and that Virgin subscribers will also be able to watch content over the internet.

As part of their response to Ofcom's public service broadcasting review, sources 'close to the corporation' claim that the BBC are planning to 'offer Channel 4 and ITV the free and open use of its iPlayer online video technology.'
The concept is currently being debated as a means to flesh out the BBC' offer of partnerships with competing public service broadcasters.
ITV has already made public they plan to revamp their online viewing portal, and Channel 4 is said to be 'underwhelmed' by the proposal to rebrand their '4OD' service under the iPlayer moniker, insisting 'cash assistance to close its £150m-a-year funding gap' would be of better use.
What's your thoughts on the BBC giving up the iPlayer technology? On one hand it's good the BBC are willing to share their system, but could it not be seen as an attempt to gain the monopoly over internet TV viewing habits? As part of their response to Ofcom's public service broadcasting review, sources... more

Yahoo on Wednesday announced an effort to provide the software underpinnings of network-enabled TV, a move that could transform not only what it means to watch TV but also what it means to advertise on it.
Though the TV experience has been spiced up by voting for American Idol contestants, it generally has retained its famously passive character. Yahoo wants to change this by bringing a version of its Yahoo Widget Engine, a software foundation that can run small applications called widgets, to network-enabled TVs.
This new version, called the Widget Channel, will resemble the version that's available for PCs, but will come with a different user interface to let programmers build widgets that can be controlled from a distance with a remote control, said Patrick Barry, Yahoo's vice president of connected TV at Yahoo.
Yahoo's hope is the move will bring its clout on the Internet to a new domain.
"Our goal is to aggregate a very large, multimillion-person audience across a number of devices with our standard platforms so we can start to address the audience in a unified consistent way, and ultimately create a liquid advertising market," Barry said.
Yahoo is working on partnerships with TV makers to have the software built in and integrated with TV functions. "I'm quite sure there are going to be products on this," Barry said. "I expect to see some things next year."Yahoo on Wednesday announced an effort to provide the software underpinnings of... more

Beginning Thursday, TiVo will offer thousands of its subscribers the ability to stream YouTube videos onto their television sets through their broadband-enabled TiVo boxes.
It's TiVo's first deal for streaming online content, though the company has partnerships with 60 Internet sites that provide content to TiVo. Unlike with those relationships, TiVo users won't be able to store YouTube video clips, just watch them and bookmark them for easy retrieval later.
Tara Maitra, GM of content services at TiVo, said the company's users have downloaded 27 million pieces of content from the 60 Internet partners. Beyond Amazon Unbox, product reviews from the likes of CNET and comedy shorts from such sources as the Onion and Break.com are popular.
Apple, via its Apple TV, which isn't nearly as popular as TiVo, also allows users to play YouTube videos on TV screens, though neither Apple nor YouTube will say how often the feature is used.
