Green-technology projects flourished at organizations of all sizes in 2008, a trend that, at first blush, might seem counterintuitive. Given the economic hardships companies are facing, you might expect that projects seemingly tied to feel-good corporate social responsibility endeavors would take a backseat to initiatives aimed at bolstering the bottom line.Green-technology projects flourished at organizations of all sizes in 2008, a trend... more

Prohibition has failed; legalisation is the least bad solution
"The failure of the drug war has led a few of its braver generals, especially from Europe and Latin America, to suggest shifting the focus from locking up people to public health and “harm reduction” (such as encouraging addicts to use clean needles). This approach would put more emphasis on public education and the treatment of addicts, and less on the harassment of peasants who grow coca and the punishment of consumers of “soft” drugs for personal use. That would be a step in the right direction. But it is unlikely to be adequately funded, and it does nothing to take organised crime out of the picture."Prohibition has failed; legalisation is the least bad solution

Nothing makes me more angry than seeing greedy religious organizations spending tax exempt or tax deferred contributions on hate propaganda especially in these hard times where their contributions and tax exempt money should be spent on the infrastructure that their castles are resting on and the people that really need help. After reading one of the first acts initiated by Bush, the faith based iniatiative, at white house.gov where it clearly grants tax breaks and clearly states NONDISCRIMINATION, I really don't see how they get away with spending, or stealing, this money from the rest of us and then spending it to hurt us. They are theiving sociopathic hypocrites and therefore they are the ones who don't have any morals and should be judged themselves for tax fraud. The above is one link that argues why fanatical wealthy religious institutions aren't paying their fair share. There's no reason why a law or act or something couldn't be made, new laws and acts are made all the time(Patriot Act, Military Commissions act(both nightmares)). According to either the Human Rights Campaign or Glaad or ACLU, I forget, an estimated 10,000,000.00 is spent each year on antigay propaganda and now recently millions alone against the california marriage ammendment(and undoubtably MUCH MORE FOR THE POLITICAL ELECTION UNDERWAY). I doubt very seriously that those dollars are taxed and they should be spent on helping people in need, not promoting intolerance and hatred. It is not acceptable to be spending this inordinately large amount of government tax money on idealogical issues rather than for real assistance to people it is meant for. Nothing makes me more angry than seeing greedy religious organizations spending tax... more

WASHINGTON — The number of motorcyclist deaths jumped in 2007, accounting for nearly one in eight motor vehicle deaths, government safety officials said on Thursday.
Deaths of people in cars and trucks, on bicycles or on foot dropped by nearly 2,000 last year, pushing the overall death rate to a historic low. But deaths of motorcyclists surged 6.6 percent, to 5,154; 2007 was the 10th straight year of increase.

PACOIMA Police say a Pacoima man couldn't take the noise from his neighbor's car stereo anymore and shot him to death early Wednesday morning.
Raymundo Serrato, 58, died at the scene of the 2:15 a.m. shooting in the 13000 block of Kelowna Street, said Officer Kate Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section.
Lopez said the man was shot by a Jubenal Guillen, 55, during a dispute. Guillen was arrested on suspicion of murder.
"There were words exchanged; a scuffle," LAPD Detective Pat Barron said. "And after the scuffle -- or during the scuffle -- the suspect produced a firearm and shot the victim."
A woman who lives in the neighborhood said that the younger man regularly came home in the early morning hours and made a lot of noise, which may have upset his 58-year-old next-door neighbor.
"So I guess he, just, probably, had enough. He had enough, so he shot him," Lisa Velasquez said.

The "Bass Busters" do not have proton packs or ride around in a renovated ambulance, but they will still get rid of things that go bump in the night.
Operation Bass Busters is the name of the Milwaukee Police Department's new plan to crackdown on loud music in cars cruising through city streets.
Police officer Christopher Chu said the operation became necessary when the sound became a nuisance.
"It's a concern for alot of the community," he said. "It's a daily, hourly annoyance."
He also said that when police pull people over for noise violations it usually leads to other charges.
Music that is heard from more than 50 feet away will be subject to a $237 fine.

Who knew wine could get even better than it is now: all delicious and helpful in awkward social situations?! Through a new Facebook application, users can make wineries transfer to 100% renewable energy for free. Village Green Energy, along with a handful of CA wineries, has launched a Facebook application it’s calling Green My Vino, which will allow users to give “gifts” of renewably generated electricity to each other; each time they hit certain milestones, a winery in Northern California permanently switches its energy consumption to use electricity from renewable sources like wind, geothermal or solar.
GET THE APPLICATION AT:
VillageGreenEnergy.com/facebook.
This looks like a pretty awesome initiative. Now, drinking wine will only harm your liver, not the planet.
Add the app! Oh by the way, the CEO of Village Green Energy is a guy named Michael Jackson. The people who run it are just very smart, enthusiastic socially responsible young people who wanted to make a difference, and this is just one of many socially responsible initiatives created by people just like you and me. Masked Burglars tracked through apartment break-in
Officer Scott Korte reported that he was called last week, to a burglary on the 1000 block of Sutter. The Officers entered the apartment and saw that the place was “trashed” including toilet paper strewn about the bathroom and all over the rest of the apartment. The investigation turned a bit when they learned that entry was made from a second floor window and that food that was left out for the occupant’s dogs had been eaten. The burglars then apparently developed a thirst and drank every drop of water from the toilet bowl. It was then that the officers saw the footprints on the toilet and around the apartment, very small, thin footprints. Turns out the suspects were raccoons. No capture was made.
Seriously folks, if we learn anything from this case, it is that even if you live on a level above the ground floor, it may still be accessed. Remember to screen or close windows entirely.
