Excerpt: "Let us not forget that people are dying thanks to bank-related abuses, even though it's not as direct or obvious as by assassinations. On the mortgage front alone, we've discussed for three years how many foreclosures are simply unwarranted, some created by servicers for their own profit, many of the others unjustified because it would have been better for everyone, the borrower, the mortgage investors, the broader community, for the borrower to get a modification, but the servicer put its own bottom line first and foreclosed. There have been cases of suicides on the eve of foreclosures, and even a courtroom death that was attributed to the stress of fighting a dubious foreclosure. But in addition to these clear cases of death by bank, there are many more cases where the financial distress of a foreclosure leads to a later suicide, or the curtailment of spending on health measures that shorten lifespans. The major servicers have blood on their hands as much, likely much more, than the demonized Russian oligarchs, but everyone here is too polite to say so out loud."Excerpt: "Let us not forget that people are dying thanks to bank-related abuses,... more

Parents, it seems, are no longer trusted to parent. If you fail to take on the latest childcare fad deemed best by policy makers for your baby, then you risk being judged a 'bad parent' - guilty of some kind of negligence and abuse. Hence the recent story in the UK of four children being taken away from their parents, without a right to contact, because the family were fat. WORLDbytes Citizen TV makers visited Jennie Bristow, journalist and writer of Standing Up To Supernanny and Alison Small and Jane Sandeman, members of the Institute of Ideas Parenting Forum who provide a critical and thought provoking perspective, questioning prevailing distrust.Parents, it seems, are no longer trusted to parent. A new study has revealed the extent to which shootings and other gun crime in the UK goes unreported. It also highlights the poverty which lies behind gun crime.
The cultural unwritten law of not 'grassing' - and intimidation of witnesses - distorts gun crime figures.
The Centre for Crime and Justice Studies, which carried out the research, called upon the government to focus on social solutions to combat the menace. It warned that tough sentencing policies "may be ineffective".
"Contrary to its commitment to be 'tough on crime'... the Government's criminal justice policy has been characterised by a reluctance to acknowledge the causal relation between income inequality and violent crime," it said.A new study has revealed the extent to which shootings and other gun crime in the UK... more

Almost 200 organizations and thousands more individuals across Canada are demanding the Federal government end its war in Afghanistan and redirect funds from record-high military spending to peace, including affordable housing. This broad new alliance ranges from Canada's largest civil society organizations to grassroots community groups, and is growing daily. (Sign now: www.HousingNotWar.ca)
300,000 people experience homelessness annually in Canada, the only industrialized country with no national housing program. The UN recently reaffirmed the "devastating impact of this national crisis... including a large number of deaths" from homelessness during Canada's worst housing shortage since the Great Depression. Meanwhile, skyrocketing military spending is already at the highest level since WWII, and the government fights a war devastating some of the poorest people in the world in Afghanistan -- a war most people in Canada oppose, but Canadian Generals predict could last decades.
CURRENT FACTS:
-- Military: $18.2 billion/year // highest since WWII // 13th highest in the World // 8.5% of Federal budget // $100 million per month to fight the war in Afghanistan
-- Housing: $2 billion/year // just 1% of Federal budget // The ONLY industrialized country with NO national program // Worst housing shortage since Great Depression
-- Homelessness: 300,000 people annually // Very high death rate (people die every week) // Millions more in 'core housing need', enduring poor or insecure housing.

I will support flunking schools that underperform when all public schools equally share the burden of a full representation of children. Don't kick the schools while they are down!
