Supply versus demand will reflect a product’s value in any market. An immensely addictive substance will consequently reflect a high value.
Opiate narcotics create a lucrative industry for both the legal and illegal markets. Former underground dealers from South Jersey recently gave interviews about the consumer demand for opiate narcotics such as Percocet, Oxycontin, and heroinhttp://candiceslosthighway.wordpress.com/2011/12/15/legal-drug-pushers-turn-bigger-prof... more

Anyone that comes to visit America may notice that most of us walk around like a bunch of zombies. Well, the truth is that this is because about half of us are completely doped up on prescription drugs. In America, we don't just take pills if we are sick. In this day and age, the pharmaceutical companies have come up with a pill for just about everything. If we are feeling a little sad, we are told to just pop a pill. If we are feeling a little bit of pain, we are told to just pop a pill. If our children like to run around and play, we are told that giving them the right pills will settle them down. Every single year, prescription drug use in America increases, and there are dozens of different pharmaceutical companies that are making billions of dollars off of our "legal" addiction to drugs. The funny thing is that many of these "legal" drugs are only just the slightest bit different from many of the "illegal" drugs that are being sold out on the streets. But because they have "government approval", the big pharmaceutical companies can relentlessly peddle them to the American public. Many of these drugs are very damaging to our health, many of them are very damaging to our ability to think and many of them are extremely addictive.Anyone that comes to visit America may notice that most of us walk around like a bunch... more

A user’s perception of addiction is similar to viewing one’s house from one’s own window. People who are close to the users offer extensive understanding of the opiate lifestyle.
Brittany Hickman and Robert Rivera, both from South Jersey, grew up around opiate
addicts, which gave them deep insights of the drug and its consequences.

A teenager in Colorado Springs has been told he cannot attend school after consuming prescription THC lozenges that his doctor has turned to in order to control a rare neurological disorder. His diaphragmatic and axial myoclonus causes seizures that are only controlled by THC, but the school says that consuming the lozenges at home and then attending school violates the school's zero tolerance policy for marijuana, since the child is considered to be in "internal possession" of the banned substance after he takes it.
This isn't just stupid, it's scientifically illiterate. Surely, this kid is in possession of the metabolites of marijuana lozenges, not the lozenges themselves.
He was able to return to school in January but as the district would not allow him to possess or consume his prescribed medicine on campus, he transferred to a school closer to home so that he could walk home as needed to take his medicine.
After the district's latest salvo was delivered, the teen's father said he spoke with both the district superintendent and the district attorney and that neither were receptive to his arguments that his son needs the medicine to function, does not get high and does not smell like marijuana.
The district has refused to comment to us, other than for a spokesperson to say that the district intends to follow the letter of the law, which is that no student may possess or consume medical marijuana on school grounds.

(NEWSER) – In an effort to beat the "reefer madness" stigma of smoking weed, a Colorado company is making pot-infused soda for medical marijuana patients, writes David Teeghman at Discovery. Dixie Elixirs organic sodas look just about like anything else on the shelf, but deliver an added kick from "a carefully cultivated blend of the finest Sativa-dominant buds," the company says. They're available to anyone with a prescription.

Mariana van Zeller, a correspondent for Vanguard, is a Peabody Award-winning journalist.
For the source of the nation’s fastest-growing drug problem, you don’t need to look to Colombia or Mexico or Afghanistan -- you need to look in your medicine cabinet.
That’s what the Drug Enforcement Agency says as it marks National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Over 3,400 sites nationwide have joined in the DEA’s effort to prevent increased pill abuse and theft by offering a free and anonymous service to collect unwanted, unused, or expired prescription drugs.
The initiative comes after an onslaught of data over the last year that prescription drug abuse is soaring, and that the majority of abused pills are being obtained from family and friends.

On a recent trip back to the United States I was shocked by the amount of commercials on TV advertising prescription drugs. It seems that pharmaceutical companies have developed a drug for just about every little problem we have. But is it healthy for us, our society and the environment? Are doctors too quick to prescribe medication as a solution to all our little problems?

Injectable "medical" grade heroin should be offered under supervision to the most hardened addicts, say UK researchers.
A trial in 127 addicts who had persistently failed to quit the drug showed a significant drop in use of "street" heroin after six months.
Writing in The Lancet, the researchers said the "robust evidence" supports wider provision of heroin treatment.
A spokesman for the government said it would consider the findings.
He said the latest study plus a series of other trials now provide clear evidence that this type of treatment should be offered more widely.
It was outlined in the UK government's 2008 Drug Strategy, subject to the results from this trial.
He added that although more expensive than conventional treatments, heroin therapy is considerably cheaper than imprisonment.
A Department of Health spokesman said any approach that gets people off drugs for good should be explored.

I love how in the caption it states, "Heroin is highly addictive," then they talk about prescribing it to get people off drugs. I guess its a lot easier these days to get a population hooked on heroin. Look what these same people and their British East India Company fore-bearers, now operating as the Committee of 300, did to China prior to the Opium Wars.
Coincidentally, the opium/heroin is coming from the same place: Afghanistan. Ain't it funny how all that works out. Its called the New World Order, do some research, b/c your next to get pumped full of heroin. This time instead of priests with dime bags in their bibles, they got eugenicists in lab coats and needles.Injectable "medical" grade heroin should be offered under supervision to the... more

'Not gonna try and sound all happy-go-lucky, like I never get low. I have my days where I have to search my brain for a reason to get out of bed. But I do worry when so many people expect to find all the right answers in a pill.
Sounds all too easy, and I hate that pharmaceutical companies are cashing in on our misery to the tune of billions.

Correspondent Mariana Van Zeller and producers Darren Foster and Cerissa Tanner were honored today with a Peabody Award—electronic journalism's most distinguished prize—for their work on the Vanguard documentary "The OxyContin Express."
This morning we learned that "The OxyContin Express" will be the recipient of a Peabody Award. It’s one of the highest acheivements in our field and we’re deeply honored for being recognized and in such esteemed company.
But we don’t want to let this moment pass without acknowledging the tremendous debt we owe to the people who helped us make the film. Journalism is a strange business. We sometimes ask people to share deeply personal parts of their lives in exchange for a very idealistic notion: that somehow their personal story will help to serve a greater good.
Maureen and her son Tod took that brave leap of faith. And their cooperation and incredible honesty provided the emotional heart of this piece.
In addition, there are many people who shared their valuable time and expertise to help us understand prescription drug abuse and what was going on in Florida and Kentucky. Several of them appeared in the documentary, many did not, but their contribution was no less valuable.
In Florida, we’d like to thank Sgt. Lisa McElhaney, Sgt. Richard Pisanti and the Broward County Sheriff’s Department; Representative Kelly Skidmore; Dr. Sanford Silverman and the Task Force for Prescription Drug Abuse; Joel Kaufman and the United Way of Broward County; Pastor John Ramseur and Calvary House.
In Kentucky, Greenup County Sheriff Keith Cooper was all southern charm and hospitallity. He opened the doors to everything, including the prison where Dawna, Jessica, Holly, Tiffany, Tim and Terry graciously shared their stories.
Thanks also to Lt. Govenor Dan Mangiardo, Dr. John Morgan and Valerie Campbell at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. And next door in West By God Virginia, Dr. Carl Rolly Sullivan at the home of the Mountaineers provided incredible insight into addiction and recovery.
This story would have never make it off the ground without the support and care of the people who are living it everyday. We owe this incredible honor to them. And hope that in some way the piece made a difference.
Thank you!
—Mariana, Darren and Cerissa
