The French parliament approved a law imposing the ban on wearing burqa in all public places. Not only schools or public offices but roads, public transportations and shops, too. Only in mid October the Constitutional Court will say if this law is correct or not. But now many other European countries are thinking to do the same.

An 8-year-old boy who is a Dutch citizen is the sole survivor of a deadly plane crash in Libya, airline officials said Wednesday.
Afriqiyah Airways confirmed on its website late Wednesday that the other 92 passengers and 11 crew members were killed when the plane crashed while trying to land at the Tripoli International Airport.
The child, identified as Ruben van Assouw, suffered multiple fractures in his lower limbs and underwent an operation at Al Khadra Hospital in Tripoli, a doctor at the hospital said.
The boy has seen a Dutch Embassy representative and is sedated and asleep, she said.
The Dutch Foreign Ministry, which had a representative at the hospital waiting to identify the boy, declined to confirm the child's name.
The Afriqiyah Airways plane originated in Johannesburg, South Africa. Of those killed, 58 passengers were Dutch, six South African, two Libyan, two Austrian, one German, one French, one Zimbabwean and two British. Another 19 passengers' nationalities could not immediately be identified. The 11 crew members were all Libyan.
The plane, an Airbus A330-200, was at the end of its nearly nine-hour flight when it crashed at 6 a.m.
"We express our sincere regret and sadness on behalf of the airline. As well, we would like to express our condolences to the relatives and friends of those who had passengers on Flight 8U771 destined for Tripoli late last night, due to arrive around 6 o'clock this morning," said Nicky Knapp, a representative of the Airports Company South Africa. She was speaking on behalf of Afriqiyah Airways.
Jerzy Buzek, president of the European Parliament, said the child's survival, "given this tragic event, is truly a miracle."
At the crash site, workers with surgical masks combed through the smoldering wreckage, which spilled over a large area. A wheel lay atop a pile of bags. Two green airline seats sat upright and intact amid burned parts of the aircraft.
Officials recovered the plane's flight data recorder, which investigators use to piece together a flight's last minutes.
The Tripoli-based Afriqiyah (Arabic for "African") operates flights to four continents. The planes in the fleet carry the logo 9.9.99: the date when the African Union was formed.
The plane that crashed was one of three Airbus 330-200s that the airline owns.
CNN's Stephanie Halasz contributed to this report.

On 18th March, a delegation of students from University of Palermo was at the European Parliament in Brussels for a meeting on mafias and transnational organised crime.
The meeting was part of “Students citizens of Europe”, a project led by the University of Palermo in association with the group “Contrariamente”.
Delegates arrived at the EU Parliament wearing a t-shirt with the claim “No mafia: Sicilians against all mafias” translated in the four official languages of the European Union.
During the meeting were scheduled speeches of several guests including Michele Curto, President of FLARE Network.
Delegates were however not allowed to enter the EU Parliament due to the t-shirt they were wearing. Security officers of the Parliament stated that the message written on the t-shirts was a kind of political message, therefore not permitted inside the building.
The delegation was finally able to attend the meeting. They removed their t-shirts and entered the Parlamient, just to wear them again once they reached the room where the meeting on organised crime was held.
“For the Parliament’s security, apparently it is forbidden for young citizens to wear a t-shirt with ‘no mafia’ on them” MEP Rosario Crocetta said. “In this case however - he continued - these guys are expressing their thoughts”.
The project led by the University of Palermo has planned several workshops for the forthcoming months. On 18th March, a delegation of students from University of Palermo was at the European... more

On 7th December it will start, in Copenhagen, the Un summit on climate change. Now, Denmark has submitted a draft that could become the basis for a political agreement: 50% reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050. But there's no midterm plan and 2050 is far away.

The British National Party (BNP) have been posting pamphlets out to millions highlighting true Brits who er, aren't British at all - as part of their European elections campaign.
The pamphlets contain pictures and a short story telling voters why the 'typical Britons' featured are voting BNP. Sadly, for the controversial political party, these are just stock photos of Italians and Americans and the stories made up.
Hang on, there is at least one Brit, a Scots Guardsman - but he has said publicly that he'd "never vote for them in a miliion years".

Silvio Berlusconi is at it again. In a blunt display of looks and fake boobs over brain, he selected beauty queens and TV stars as prospective MEPs.
Justifying his choice the Italian prime minister said he wanted "new and young faces" in politics.
Soap opera actress Camilla Ferranti, 30, former TV star Eleonora Gaggiolo, 29, ex Big Brother contestant Angela Sozio and beauty queen Barbara Matera have all been picked to stand for the European Parliament. None of these young ladies have prior exposure to politics BUT they have been given a "crash course"!
Very insightfully, miss Matera said: "I have always wanted a career in politics but I didn't feel I was ready - but Silvio says I am."

Political correctness has reached European Parliament, and it's now against the rules to refer to a female MEP as anything other than her full name. The ban includes continental titles as well, such as Madame and Mademoiselle, Frau and Fraulein and Senora and Senorita. They're putting this in to effect just in case the titles offend female MEPs. It seems weird to me that not being addressed with some sort of title, but instead your full name, is less offensive or more professional. The only time anyone ever calls me my full name is my mom when I'm in deep trouble. What do you think about this PC move?Political correctness has reached European Parliament, and it's now against the... more

The Conservative Party's leader in the European Parliament has been forced to resign, after admitting to breaking the rules on expenses to the tune of around £500,000. Ironically, Giles Chichester's role was to ensure MEPs in his party were behaving scrupulously. But it has emerged that over the past 12 years he has been transferring funds from MEP allowances into a company of which he was a director.
The Tories have moved to head off damaging allegations of sleaze. David Cameron, Tory party leader, issued the following statement:
"Giles Chichester is right to stand down as leader of our MEPs to prepare a full explanation of how his office is funded. Just as I expect our MPs to adhere to the highest standards, so must our MEPs. The tax-paying public have a right to know how their money is being spent and politicians have a duty to ensure it is spent properly."The Conservative Party's leader in the European Parliament has been forced to... more

WASHINGTON, Nov. 13 The European Parliament voted Tuesday to impose quotas on the emission of carbon dioxide by airlines, setting up a fight with the United States, which argues against unilateral actions on aviation, a relatively small but rapidly growing source of global warming gases.
The Parliament gave preliminary approval to a global warming control plan that would require, beginning in 2011, that airlines flying to and from Europe offset some of their emissions by buying carbon dioxide allowances on the open market.
A result would be increased pressure on airlines to do more to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases from burning jet fuel. Europe has imposed similar emissions limits on other industries for several years in search of steep reductions in its greenhouse gas production.
