Last month, President Obama announced that he would send an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan. Shortly after the decision was made, General David Petraeus, head of the U.S. Central Command, warned of increased violence in the Central Asian country as the new troops arrived. Now, retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey, who teaches international affairs at West Point and who has repeatedly visited Afghanistan to assess the situation there, is estimating that American casualties could go as high as “300 to 500 killed and wounded a month by next summer”:Last month, President Obama announced that he would send an additional 30,000 troops... more

The regime may fall? In Iran broken out again the protests in the streets, that never really stopped since the election in June, won by Ahmadinejad with many suspicions of fraud. These days the opposition took advantage of Shiite religious festival of Ashura, which commemorates the death of the grandson of Muhammad, Husayn ibn Ali, killed in 680 AD by the troops of the Caliph Yazid. In the current political climate the Iranian religious feast has a special meaning.

In six months there are never been good news from Iran. After Ahmadinejad won the election with a long series of frauds the repression against the protests has never ceased. Now Ayatollah Khamenei has threatened the opposition on television, declaring that "will be eliminated" and many Iranian blogs fear that the reformist leaders, Moussavi and Karroubi, could be arrested. Over the last 6 months more than 100 journalists were arrested and 50 have fled the country.

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Eight American troops and two members of the Afghan National Security Force were killed Saturday in a battle with hundreds of militants in eastern Afghanistan, officials said.
It was the largest number of Americans killed by hostile action in a single day in more than a year, according to CNN records.
At least 13 Afghan police officers were captured in the attack, according to Haji Abdul Halim, the deputy governor of Nuristan province.
Tribal militants attacked two security outposts in Nuristan province, firing rockets and rifles, said the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. The Afghan Ministry of Defense said hundreds of militant fighters surrounded the outposts.
The militants launched their attack from a local mosque and a nearby village, the international alliance said.
Coalition forces repelled the attack, inflicting "heavy enemy casualties," and calling in airstrikes, the alliance said, without offering further details.
"My heart goes out to the families of those we have lost and to their fellow soldiers who remained to finish this fight," said Col. Randy George, commander of Task Force Mountain Warrior. "This was a complex attack in a difficult area. Both the U.S. and Afghan soldiers fought bravely together; I am extremely proud of their professionalism and bravery."
ISAF withheld the identities of the deceased until family members are notified.

LOS ANGELES – A self-proclaimed preacher who was on the TV beauty pageant "The Sexiest Bachelor in America" will be arraigned next week for allegedly torturing and murdering his girlfriend, an ex-adult movie actress.
Brian Lee Randone, 45, was charged last week with one count of murder and one count of torture. He was scheduled for arraignment on Sept. 29 and faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.
Randone remained jailed Friday on $2 million bail. Robison did not know whether he had an attorney.
Randone was arrested on Sept. 11. Prosecutors said he beat and choked Felicia Lee during a domestic dispute at their apartment in the foothill community of Monrovia, northeast of Los Angeles.
He then dialed 911 to report she was unconscious, investigators said.
"It appeared to be torture prior to the murder," Sgt. Brian Schoonmaker, a homicide detective working the case, said Friday. Lee apparently suffered dozens of injuries in the 24 hours before she died, Schoonmaker said, but he did not provide details.
The two had lived together for only a few months, Schoonmaker said. Investigators were still trying to determine the motive for the killing.
In 2000, Randone appeared on the Fox special "The Sexiest Bachelor in America." He vied with contestants from other states but did not win.
Lee, who was born in Singapore, had parts in the movies "Rush Hour 2" and "The Fast and the Furious" and had done some modeling for the Playboy television channel, according to her Web site, which she shut down last year.
She also appeared in several adult movies under the name Felicia Tang. Candace Kita, a model who had worked with her, said Lee was nude in the movies but did not portray any sex acts.
Randone was involved in ministry as a mime and did "some evangelistic types of entertainment," Schoonmaker said. He did not know when or where Randone performed.
Randone has a bachelor's degree from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and a master's of divinity degree from Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported.
He worked as a mime on the campus of Baylor University in Texas in 1996, the newspaper said.
Lee's murder is reminiscent of another case last month, in which Ryan Jenkins, a former contestant on the reality TV show "Megan Wants a Millionaire," allegedly killed his wife, ex-model Jasmine Fiore, in Los Angeles, then fled to Canada and killed himself.LOS ANGELES – A self-proclaimed preacher who was on the TV beauty pageant... more

"I was there. I was in New York City. I was 21 years old and had a plane ticket booked to leave out of JFK on American Airlines for September 13th to London.
Tuesday. I remember the ceaseless noise of sirens. Trash floating in the street. The city a barren wasteland.
Papers plastered everywhere on every possible surface with faces and names scrawled underneath begging for any information about loved ones. College kids my age. I stared at a picture of a boy. It was a recent photo. It said he was on a high floor. I knew he was dead. He looked so alive in the photo. Handsome, even. But the shaky pen on the flyer begged for information. His picture was one of thousands on walls, on lamp posts, across the city. I fingered these papers. Hopeless cries for help, dirty and dusty from other fingerprints that had done exactly what I had just done—tried to touch their souls.
No one understood. The world had changed forever...." (TO READ THE FULL STORY VISIT WWW.ONEOF365.COM)"I was there. I was in New York City. I was 21 years old and had a plane ticket... more

There isn't a single category of journalist. There are two very different kinds of journalists: the real ones and the ones paid by their masters to make propaganda. This second category usurps the name of journalist without having the right to it, does a job in which doen't risk anything and earns a lot and often attracts the hatred and the disgust of citizens against this profession. But in the world there are many true journalists, even in places where it's almost impossible to be one of them. There isn't a single category of journalist. There are two very different kinds... more

A child and four women are among at least six Christians killed after 40 houses and a church were set ablaze amid riots with Muslims in eastern Pakistan, officials have said.
Dozens of people were also injured in the violence in Pakistan's Gojra village, which erupted after allegations surfaced that a Quran had been defiled, the officials said on Saturday.
"Six Christians including a child were killed and more than a dozen were injured in this sad incident," Shahbaz Bhatti, a federal minister of minorities, told the AFP news agency by telephone.
"Some people blamed the Christians for the desecration of the holy Quran," he said adding that the accusations were "baseless".
Mohammad Saleem, a correspondent for The Dawn newspaper in Pakistan, told Al Jazeera: "The clashes erupted when a boy of a Christian community allegedly desecrated a few pages of the holy Quran.
"The Christians said the Muslims were in a mood to attack the locality."
Renewed tensions
Police said that unrest between the two groups of villagers first flared late last month over a dispute over the Muslim holy book, which was later resolved.
But tensions erupted on Saturday when the Christian group were attacked again and their houses set on fire.
"Today, according to our information... this is the same issue of alleged desecration of the Quran," Inkisar Khan, the city police chief, told reporters.
"All the dead are Christians. I was told that they were burned alive."
Television footage from the area showed police using tear gas to disperse an angry mob.
Desecrating the Koran is punishable by death under the blasphemy laws of the mainly Muslim Pakistan, but no such sentences have been carried out.
