Court jails animal rights activists

LONDON (AFP) — Seven animal rights activists who conducted a six-year campaign against companies with links to an animal testing laboratory in Cambridge were on Wednesday sentenced to between four and 11 years in prison.

From 2001 to 2007, they targeted firms across Europe that had either supplied Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) or had secondary links with the company in a bid to force it to close.

The seven were found guilty of conspiracy to blackmail by Winchester Crown Court, southern England, last month.

During sentencing, judge Neil Butterfield described the campaign as "urban terrorism" and a "relentless, sustained and merciless persecution" which made victims' lives "a living hell".

Heather Nicholson, 41, a founding member of the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) group, was sentenced to 11 years in prison, while co-founders Gregg and Natasha Avery, 41 and 39 respectively, received nine-year sentences.

The latter pair pleaded guilty to the charges against them, as did 22-year-old Daniel Amos, who received a four-year sentence.

Gavin Medd-Hall, 45, who researched SHAC victims over the Internet, was sentenced to eight years in prison, while 20-year-old Gerrah Selby and 21-year-old Daniel Wadham got four and five years respectively.

Staff at companies with links to the lab were sent hoax bomb parcels to their homes and offices, and received threats of violence and intimidating phone calls.

SHAC also claimed that managers at companies that supplied HLS were paedophiles, and painted words such as "scum" and "puppy killer" on workers' homes and cars.

8 years for researching on the internet? Are you kidding me? SHAC scientists are anything BUT victims. They literally torture animals and kill humans with their research every day so a pharm companies can make a few extra million.The only victims here are the nonhuman animals used in their research and the activists who go to jail for half a decade or more for trying to stop the abuse. Environmentalist Receives Higher Prison Sentence than Al-Qaeda Operative

While the FBI targets environmentalists, Osama bin Laden remains free.

Christopher Paul, aka “Abdul Malek,” is an Ohio native who joined Al Qaeda in the early 90s. According to the FBI, he:

* received training in “the use of assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, and small unit tactics,”
* fought with the mujahedeen in Afghanistan,
* and returned to Ohio to recruit and establish a terrorist cell.

He pleaded guilty to conspiring with others to use a weapon of mass destruction against Americans at home and abroad. His sentence: 20 years.

By comparison, Marie Mason was sentenced to nearly 22 years in prison, as a “terrorist,” for property destruction in the name of defending the environment.

Her sentence, for arson targeting genetic engineering at Michigan State University, was the most severe yet in what many are calling the “Green Scare.” Unfortunately, it is not an isolated incident. Jeffrey “Free” Luers was sentenced to 22 years and 8 months for setting fire to SUVs. And Eric McDavid was sentenced to 20 years for “conspiracy” to sabotage the Nimbus dam, even though an FBI operative provided the group with bomb-making recipes; at times financed their transportation, food and housing; strung along McDavid, who had the hopes of a romantic relationship; and poked and prodded the group into action.

The FBI has labeled the environmental and animal rights movements as the “number one domestic terrorism threat.” Groups like the Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front, and activists like Marie Mason, have clearly broken the law in the name of defending the environment. But they have never used rocket-propelled grenades, never created weapons of mass destruction, and never harmed a single human being.

This should concern everyone, regardless of how you feel about environmental issues or economic sabotage: Such skewed government priorities are wasting valuable law enforcement resources targeting environmentalists while Al-Qaeda continues to place American lives at risk.

A BILL
TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
PURPOSE: To create a ban on torture, secret renditions, and to preserve the reputation of our Military and put our soldiers less at risk
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES:
Sec. 1. This order of law will create a ban, considering it a criminal offense, and lead to a punishment of any United States Citizen, Represenative, Congressmen, Congresswomen, Senator, Political personell, Military personell, generals, and anyone else serving our country from engaging in criminal offenses against this Act.
Sec. 2. This order has been created for the sake of human rights everywhere, the punishment of real terrorists and lead to fair trials on all suspected terrrorists and so if enough evidence as provided by the Constitution of the United States, and will by this law all forfeiture of torture rights, all rights to secretly abduct United States citizens and non Citzens alike will also be enforced with this law, on any institution funded by the United States, under any governmental control by anyone working for the United States government
Sec. 3. Definitions:
(a)Torture includes any abuse, unwillingful sexual conduct, unwillingful strriping of any clothing from any Citizen and non Citizen accused of any type of crime or midconduct, slandering against any person detained whether a citizen or non citizen of our country, taking away the rights of citizens and non United States citizens of talking to a lawyer, friends, family if there is any case of being accused of wrong doing such as terrorism, drug dealing, and any other crimes under U.S amd international law, taking away the rights of any human being from being allowed to show up at a court hearing as mentioned in the Constitution, denying the rights to be treated like a innocent human being just because of that persons belief, religious status, viewpoints, and even who that person works for. Torture is denying the persons rights to challenge their accusations whether it be terrorism, whether it be drug dealing, or whether it be any crime commited in or outside the United States. Torture is hurting somebody until the torturer gets a confession out of the tortured. In fact torture is a unrealiable method and will produce false terrrorism confessions and lead to innocent men getting the death penalty or even worse torture and abuse.

(b)Secret Renditions is any type of secret police, or government kidnapping and also forbiddon under the United States Constitution of having the right to be secured in your houses, and keeping your posessions may not be infringed unless you were convicted of a crime but there is also a Constitutional Amendment of not being allowed to conduct cruel and unusal punishment which including sexual and non sexual abuse, the electrocution of any prisoner, citizen, and non citizens alike of our Country, any method that may lead to permanent damage, humilation of the human body. Exceptions to bodily harm includes tranquilizing an out of control prisoner or citizen. Renditions are kidnapping anybody who is a Citizen or non US Citizen covertly without any court trials, without any responsiability, or any public alerts on the kidnapping, also includes government agents and personel commiting any deletion of data of the person being kidnapped.
(c)A proper hearing is the right to endure the same type of court trial that is given to regular criminals and law breakers, the right to have a witness, evidence, and even words held against the accused. Ripping the Cloak of Secrecy Away from Front Man Richard Berman
Washington, D.C. – Today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) launched BermanExposed.org, a site dedicated to exposing lobbyist Richard Berman’s activities, his myriad front groups and projects, his employees’ work, and his firm’s tactics.

For years, Berman has been a front man for business and industry in campaigns against consumer safety and health promotion groups. Through his public relations firm, Berman and Company, Berman has fought unions, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and other watchdog groups in their efforts to raise awareness about childhood obesity, the minimum wage, the dangers of smoking, mad cow disease, drunk driving, and other issues. Berman runs at least 15 industry-funded front groups and projects, such as the Center for Union Facts (CUF).

Berman and those in his employ have long been shills for a range of industries, including those related to tobacco, alcohol, chain restaurants, and tanning. Within these various groups and his public relations firm, Berman holds 16 different positions and his employees have at least 33 job titles among them. CREW’s site lists as many of those positions as are publicly available.

BermanExposed.org also includes a number of Berman and Company IRS documents, including the letter granting CUF tax-exempt status, and CUF’s 2006 990 Form. CREW has posted its IRS complaint alleging the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF), a food-and-beverage industry front group that attacks anyone who criticizes smoking, fast food or alcohol, had violated its tax-exempt status, as well as its 2006 letter to the Senate Finance Committee asking for an investigation into whether CCF and CUF have violated their tax-exempt status by working on behalf of for-profit entities. The committee never responded to CREW’s request.

Melanie Sloan, executive director of CREW, said today, “Richard Berman has become wealthy by deceiving the public through scare tactics, sleazy ads, and bogus websites. BermanExposed.org lists in one place Berman’s pay-for play activities, and demonstrates that his real expertise is making money.
