Announcing, Annapolis!
The Artificial Reef Society of British Columbia proudly announces the beginning of our newest project : HMCS Annapolis! This 371-footDestroyer has a helicopter deck and hangar plus an exterior Bridge on the upper deck. Planned to be sunk near Vancouver in Howe Sound, the Annapolis is certain to become one of the most unique and popular additions to the fleet of ARSBC artificial reefs on the British Columbia coast. The Annapolis project is a co-operative effort of the Artificial Reef Society of B.C., Canadian Artificial Reef Consultants, BrandLive Promotions, many sponsors, and with the support of dive shops, dive operators, and divers around Vancouver - and even in the U.S.!

President George W. Bush is in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt today where he will meet Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas and address the World Economic Forum on the Middle East.
Many Palestinians are upset that Bush not been more vocal in calling for the creation of an independent Palestinian state in the months following the Annapolis Peace Talks last November.

On the eve of renewed peace talks, Israel unveiled plans to build hundreds of new homes on occupied land near Jerusalem next year. Abbas and Olmert agreed at the Annapolis peace talks to try to reach a statehood agreement by the end of 2008.
Palestinian negotiators said substantive talks over borders and the fate of Jerusalem and Palestinian refugees would not begin until Israel committed itself to halt all settlement activity, as called for under the "road map" peace plan.

Israeli Public Security Minister Avi Dichter has cancelled a trip to Britain over concerns he could be arrested on war crimes allegations, his spokesman said on Thursday.

According to this article the big draw for many attending Middle Eastern states was not peace between the Palestinians and Israelis.
The real interest of many moderate states in the Middle East is to get the US to help slow the spread of extremism in the region and especially curb the influence of Iran.
They are worried they are losing their youth to Islamic radicalism and see the Israeli-Palestinian as one of the biggest issues used by radical recruiters to inspire hatred of moderate Middle-Eastern states and the US.
So even though it is unlikely that a long standing peace will come out of these talks at least it reengages the US in the region in a positive manner that doesnt include bombs and guns

Not surprisingly, the NY Times is reporting that back in Gaza, Hamas think the peace talks in Maryland are total BS.
With the recent split in the Palestinian territories between Hamas and Fatah, it's in Palestinian President Abbas' (Fatah) best interest to make himself look like the leader of Palestine to the so-called Great Powers. (Because that's where his aid money comes from.) But for Hamas, it's in their best interest to hold the line against recognition of a Jewish state.
