The damage to Manhattan portrayed in “The Avengers” would total $160 billion, costing more than the devastation of 9/11 terrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina and the Japanese tsunami.
The Hollywood Reporter consulted Kinetic Analysis Corp, a disaster cost-prediction and assessment firm, which broke down the figures as following:
Damage from the Chitauri invasion: $60-70 billion
Economic and clean-up costs: $90 billion
Compare that with the cost of the three catastrophic events mentioned above:
Sept. 11: $83 billion
Hurricane Katrina: $90 billion
Japanese tsunami: $122 billion
Insurance would probably cover the costs, given special provisions for acts of war, civil unrest, terrorism and God (thanks to Thor and Loki’s involvement). Still, this is chump change juxtaposed with another popular invasion movie.

“Compared to the aliens in Independence Day, for example, these guys were amateurs,” Chuck Watson, of Kinetics, told THR. “Of course, the Chitauri/Loki alliance were more interested in conquest and ruling, whereas the ID aliens were just looking for lunch or something.”The damage to Manhattan portrayed in “The Avengers” would total $160... more

Ironmen are, like marathons, strange sports to begin with. They really exist to provide those of us with little natural athletic ability a chance to participate in a high level athletic endeavor, complete with whippet-thin pros, fantastic logistical support, and extreme intensity. But recreational sport or no, Ironmen are not to be trifled with. As one coach has said, “You can soldier your way through a 70.3 (half Ironman—mile swim, 56 mile bike, half marathon). But if you make a mistake in an Ironman, it’s a long, bad day out there.” The truth is it’s a long bad day whether you make a mistake or not, but if you make a mistake in an IM, it can be a short, bad day, because you can end up in a tent with a needle in your arm.Ironmen are, like marathons, strange sports to begin with. You can complete an IM because you are an athlete, or because you are simply too pigheaded to quit. Not everyone can hit a curveball or run a sub-3 marathon, but everyone can force themselves to keep going for 16 hours when the bottom of their foot feels like someone has dropped a white-hot charcoal briquette into their shoe. It doesn’t take talent, just a stubborn refusal to give in. To win an Ironman, you need to be an athlete. To finish an Ironman, you simply need Ironwill. You can complete an IM because you are an athlete, or because you are simply too... more

Jeff Bridges Admits Iron Man Movie Had No Script
Iron Man may have seemed as polished as fresh power-armor, but the movie actually had no screenplay at all, says Jeff Bridges. The chaos freaked him out, until he decided to think of it as a $200 million student film.
In an interview with InContention, Bridges explained that the Marvel superhero movie rushed into production to make its release date, with the director and star making up scenes as they went along

Inspirational heart transplant triathlete Kyle Garlett must fight another battle. Not with his health this time but with disappointment after failing in his attempt to become the first heart transplant patient to complete the Ironman Triathlon World Championships at Kona this weekend.
He missed the cut-off time for the swim section by just 1 miunte 55 seconds finishing in 2:21:55. A heartbreakingly close margin for this inspirational athlete. I only hope that he can take confort from words on his website and come back fighting and give it another go.

The HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb) suit works by detecting faint bio-electrical signals using pads placed on specific areas of the body. The pads move the HAL suit accordingly and can increase user strength by up to 10 times.
When a person attempts to move, nerve signals are sent from the brain to the muscles via motoneuron, consequently moving the musculoskeletal system as the result. At this moment, very weak biosignals can be detected on the surface of the skin. HAL catches these signals through a sensor attached on the skin of the wearer. Based on the signals obtained, the power unit is controlled to wearer’s daily activities.
HAL suit can be used on helping people with movement disabilities, augmenting strength for difficult industrial tasks, disaster rescue, and entertainment.
Cyberdyne Corporation of Japan and Daiwa House has already started mass production and would be able to produce 400 units annually. HAL suit should be marketed at approximately $4,200 US dollars. The HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb) suit works by detecting faint bio-electrical signals... more
