Alright! Out with the old, and in with the new! Thanksgiving is over! We took the time to appreciate, give thanks, spend time with family and friends, and now it's time to spend spend spend all of our money! And now that we busted through our waist bands, lets bust right through and keep over consuming! Wahooo! The holiday season of buying tons of things we don't need in order to pump our egos and make us feel like we are meaningful contributors to society has arrived at last! Yiipppee!
But wait.
Adbusters pushed the Buy Nothing Day campaign this past Friday to send a message:
We want you to not only stop buying for 24 hours, but to shut off your lights, televisions and other nonessential appliances. We want you to park your car, turn off your phones and log off of your computer for the day.
We’re calling for a Ramadan-like fast. From sunrise to sunset we’ll abstain en masse, not only from holiday shopping, but from all the temptations of our five-planet lifestyles.
Maybe the Grinch has set in. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea, but if this isn't a campaign that is preaching to the choir I don't know what is. Call me crazy. But if you want to send a, "We're saving the earth by not over consuming and sending a message to Copenhagen" message~ do something big and find a way to make a dent on Cyber Monday. Get on the banner dropping band wagon and drop a huge banner off Macy's with stats and facts about where everything comes from and the child labor involved to make affordable cheap products. Where are The Yes Men when you need them?
So did you participate in Buy Nothing Friday? Do you think it touched or influenced anyone who didn't already think that way? Inquiring minds want to know...

Cyber Monday is the biggest online shopping day of the year. But by mid-day, it appeared as though sales might just reach last year's numbers.
Nearly 84 percent of retailers planned a special promotion for Cyber Monday, up from 72.2 percent in 2007, according to the eHoliday survey conducted by Shopzilla.org this fall.Nearly 25 percent of retailers surveyed indicated they would offer one-day sales, and nearly 23 percent planned to offer free shipping on all purchases.
The top five selling items at Amazon:
1. the Kindle, Amazon.com's wireless reading device;
2. and 3 two different GPS devices
4. a Sony Blu-Ray player
5. Apple's 8-gigabyte iPod music player.
Amazon.com offered shoppers significant savings on several items:
20 percent to 50 percent off on Creative's Zen 4-gigabyte MP3 player
53 percent off Microsoft Home and Student Office software
45 percent off the Samsung 2233BW 22-inch LCD monitor
There may be a silver lining in Monday's official confirmation that the American economy has been in a recession since December 2007, suggested Forrester's Mulpuru.
"Usually, when they declare a recession, it's the bottom of the stock market," she said. "So, in one way, it is actually a bit of a relief. People have been talking about a recession for a year now. It may mean we can see a light at the end of the tunnel because, hopefully, we know where the bottom is."
As for Forrester's October prediction of 12 percent growth in Web sales during the November and December holiday season, Mulpuru acknowledged the figure may be too high.
"We'll know more in the next few weeks," she said. "It depends on how strong December is."Cyber Monday is the biggest online shopping day of the year. But by mid-day, it... more

ike Grandparents Day, Cyber Monday is an event created by the retail industry.
Still, on the first Monday of the holiday season, why not shop online during work breaks?
Shop.org, an Internet retail trade group, coined the term Cyber Monday in 2005 after noticing that Web traffic to retail sites went up the Monday after Thanksgiving.
Shop.org commissioned research that shows about 84 percent of online retailers will have special promotions today, up from about 72 percent a year ago.
The group also says 55.8 percent of workers with Internet access - 72.8 million people - will shop at their desks sometime during the holiday season.
Traffic to Web sites may be up, but analysts are not as optimistic about sales.
"We expect to see higher traffic to retailers on Cyber Monday than in years past, but the year-over-year growth rates will be lower based upon the economic conditions," said Heather Dougherty, research director for Hitwise, a company that tracks Web traffic.ike Grandparents Day, Cyber Monday is an event created by the retail industry.... more
