In a talk this week at the Computer-Human Interaction conference in Atlanta, Georgia, Sharkey said there are more service-oriented robots in the world than industrial bots, which tend to work factory lines and the like.

KOMAKI, Japan — It's springtime in Japan and that means one thing. Actually, two things. Penis festivals and vagina festivals. It may sound like a sophomoric gag. But these are folk rites going back at least 1,500 years, into Japan's agricultural past. They're held to ensure a good harvest and promote baby-making. Maybe they should hold more such festivals. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/bizzareweird/292-japans-annual-penis-festival-celebrates-fertility-KOMAKI, Japan — It's springtime in Japan and that means one thing.... more
Baja California is a popular tourist destination for many Americans, particularly those of us out here on the West coast. So to service us, the local authorities are setting up a special bilingual unit to police from Tijuana 50 miles south through Rosarito to Ensenada.
Mexico's authorities say tourism has remained strong despite the escalating drug war. Cities along the border have been hit particularly hard, including Tijuana. Surely though, they must be thinking of perceptions of the region with tourists to the north, and hoping that this new task force will help.
Been to Mexico lately? Tell us about it - did you feel safe?

The Island Of The Dolls is a tourist spot in Mexico which has a very eerie story behind it.
A man called Don Julian Santana was a hermit who left the world and his family to live on the island and it's believed put the dolls up around the island to please the spirit of a little girl who drowned in the canal.
In 2001 he was found dead in the same canal but the island and the dolls remain as a rather disturbing tourist attraction. The Island Of The Dolls is a tourist spot in Mexico which has a very eerie story... more

The Naked Cowboy has become quite the tourist attraction in New York's Times Square, posing with tourists in just his pants, cowboy hat and guitar. But now he's eyeing the NYC mayor's office.
The Naked Cowboy, whose real name is Robert Burck, plans to announce his candidacy on Wednesday. He will run against incumbent Michael Bloomberg.
"No one knows how to do more with less than yours truly, and that's the kind of thinking I plan on sharing with my fellow New Yorkers when you elect me," said the Cowboy. His platform reportedly will consist of innovation on tax breaks, tourism, gay marriage, transit and homeland security. The Naked Cowboy has become quite the tourist attraction in New York's Times... more
A clever group of baboons in Knowsley Safari Park has figured out how to open rooftop luggage boxes on cars and is wreaking havoc on visitors.
The animals have been known to tear off the odd wiper or wing mirror, but recently they've been targeting cars carrying the roof boxes. Safari park bosses are now warning visitors with the boxes not to drive through the park - instead sticking to a car-friendly route outside of the baboon enclosure.
The park's manager, David Ross said: 'Their technique involves the largest baboons jumping up and down on the box, flexing it until the lock bursts open, then the rest of the baboons pile in to see what they can find.'

French tourists are the worst in the world, coming across as penny-pinching, rude and terrible at languages, according to a new survey.
The study by travel company Expedia asked 4,500 hotels worldwide to rank tourists on their behaviour.
Japanese tourists - seen as clean and tidy, polite, quiet and uncomplaining - came top for the third year running.
French travellers made amends on elegance - classed third - as well as for their discretion and cleanliness.
But the French were the least ready to try a new language, unlike US tourists who were most likely to swallow their pride and order a pizza, baguette or a paella in the local lingo.
US tourists also got top marks for generosity, as the biggest spenders and tippers.
But they fell short on other counts as the least tidy, the loudest, the worst complainers and the worst dressed.
Britons came second for their overall behaviour, politeness, quietness and even elegance - second for dress sense only to the Italians.
But in Europe, the British were seen by the hoteliers as the worst behaved.
Jonathan Cudworth, the head of product marketing at Expedia.co.uk, said: "Being voted the worst tourists in the world by our closest neighbours highlights the fact that the 'Brits Abroad' moniker is a label we still haven't managed to shrug off.French tourists are the worst in the world, coming across as penny-pinching, rude and... more
Slum tours offer travelers an authentic, offbeat look at foreign cultures—and locals a new way to make a living.
It’s a bright morning, and I’m picked up at the Copacabana Palace, one of the most splendid hotels along the beach in Rio de Janeiro, where I join a vanload of tourists. But this tour isn’t taking us up to see the iconic image of Christ the Redeemer overlooking the city, or to Ipanema to enjoy eye-popping views of tanned Brazilian beauties. This van is going to Rocinha, one of the most infamous of the favelas, the 750 or so slums that sprawl across Rio’s hillsides and are home to a quarter of the city’s 6 million residents.
From a distance, the favelas look like densely packed jungles of brick and stone thrown haphazardly across the mountain. Much of what people say of them is true. Most residents live well below the poverty line; conditions can border on squalid; drug dealing and gang warfare are so rife that police are often too afraid to enter. This is the Rio that locals steer clear of and tourists are warned to avoid. And this is the Rio that Marcelo Armstrong has been safely taking visitors to see for 17 years.Slum tours offer travelers an authentic, offbeat look at foreign cultures—and... more

Getting too close to one of New Zealand's best known natural attractions has cost two young Australians their lives.
An aerial search of a section of Fox Glacier where two men were crushed by falling ice has shown the one remaining body would not have been dislodged overnight.
Following heavy rain last night there were hopes that significant ice movement and river flow may have freed the body of 22-year-old Australian student Akshay Miranda.
But Constable Tony LeSuer from the Hokitika police said a helicopter search had established Mr Miranda's body would not have been dislodged by a rise in the river level.
