American novelist Christopher Buckley recalls when Barbra Streisand caught fire ("by standing a little bit too close to a candle") at a Vanity Fair party hosted by Christopher Hitchens in the early 90s.
See the full conversation between Stephen Fry and friends of the famous journalist and author Christopher Hitchens on Sunday 20th November at 9pm on Current UK - Sky 183, Virgin 155.

Exceedingly bland and entirely predictable, “Little Fockers” is the most tepid in the supposedly humorous trilogy that began with 2000’s “Meet the Parents.” While the first film had a modest appeal born of the novel utilization of Robert De Niro in a crankily comic capacity, this latest installment is charm-free and almost entirely bereft
of laughs.

Jennifer Aniston has stirred herself up a bit of controversy by using the word ‘retard’ inappropriately. For a photo shoot for Harper’s Bazaar, Aniston channeled Barbra Streisand, and when she made an appearance on the Live with Regis and Kelly, she was asked about the shoot.
Regis said, “You’re playing dress up.” Jen replied, “Yes, I play dress up. I do it for a living, like a retard.”
This comment has caused a lot of upset, a spokesperson for the Special Olympics has made the following comment:
“Sadly, people use the word pervasively even if they don’t realize it, people with intellectual disabilities have fought their whole lives for understanding and recognition. When people continue to use the R word, it’s hurtful.”
It’s clear that Jennifer didn’t real mean to offend anyone, and she was just poking fun at herself, but still, the use of the word ‘retard’ could be quite hurtful. Jennifer will probably issue an apology at some stage to clear this up. Check out the video of Jennifer on Live with Regis and Kelly after the cut and decide for yourself if it’s offensive or not.Jennifer Aniston has stirred herself up a bit of controversy by using the word... more

Minelli is too well known for her off-stage exploits, especially her four tempestuous marriages and addictions. She (like her mother Judy Garland) is also considered a gay icon; if you go to a drag show anywhere in the U.S., the chances are you’ll see Judy, Babs and Liza.
The shame of it all is that this outside noise tends to overshadow the fact that Liza is an excellent performer. Excellent doesn’t begin to describe it. She is dynamic, energetic, enthralling and all of this comes to life in her new DVD, Liza’s at the Palace.Minelli is too well known for her off-stage exploits, especially her four tempestuous... more

Former President Bill Clinton is welcoming a galaxy of international stars to the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative later this month, including Senator John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, whom Mr. Clinton has vowed to help Senator Barack Obama defeat in November.
The event, scheduled to run Sept. 23-26 in New York, is nonpolitical and has featured prominent Republicans in the past, including Laura Bush in 2006. Mr. McCain is to deliver the opening remarks; Mr. Obama, the Democratic nominee, is to address the participants by satellite.
“C.G.I. isn’t about politics,” said Matt McKenna, a spokesman for Mr. Clinton. “It’s about improving lives and solving some of the world’s most pressing problems. President Clinton is grateful that both candidates for president are taking time away from the trail to join in that effort.”
Mr. Clinton began the initiative in 2005 to bring together influential people to help solve problems in areas like health, energy and poverty around the world. The members have made nearly 1,000 commitments valued at more than $30 billion to provide help in more than 150 countries.
Others scheduled to attend this year include Al Gore, Bono, Lance Armstrong, Barbra Streisand, Muhammad Ali, T. Boone Pickens and Tom Brokaw. Several heads of state are also coming, including Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan, Gordon Brown of Britain and Silvio Berlusconi of Italy.

The polls are one thing, but it sounds like Barack Obama might make progress in other ways during two ultra-rich Beverly Hills fund-raisers Tuesday. According to Politico, the events could raise more than $9 million, which, if it happens, would be a one-day record. When you see how much folks are paying, it'll all make sense:
The first event will cost $28,500 per person for dinner at the Greystone Estate. Upwards of 250 high rollers — including some of the biggest executives in film, television and music — will munch gourmet chow and get to hang out with the candidate, enjoying a little face time and posing for personal pictures. A few spaces are left but the event is expected to sell out by Monday afternoon, possibly bringing in more than $8 million before expenses are subtracted. For a second, sold-out event Tuesday evening, the Obama caravan will travel just 2½ miles to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, where a reception and concert will spotlight [Barbra] Streisand and several other performers.
Hollywood heavyweights such as Steven Spielberg and David Geffen probably aren't going for the music. The Times' Dan Morain and Noam Levey report that Obama is already raking in the cash at a record clip.
