(Billboard) Producer Diplo, best known for his work with M.I.A., has announced a joint venture between his label, Mad Decent, and Downtown Records.
Upcoming releases from Mad Decent will include music from Philadelphia punk band Popo, London's dubstepers Rusko, the first ever Mad Decent compilation, and the Diplo & Switch Major Lazer collaboration "Guns Don't Kill People...Lazers Do," which will be out June 16th on Downtown Records. Other Mad Decent artists include Bonde do Role, Blaqstarr, Rye Rye, Crookers, Boy 8 Bit and South Rakkas Crew.
Downtown’s roster includes artists such Santigold, Amanda Blank, and Spankrock, all of whom Diplo has previously worked with. Other DJ-helmed labels in joint ventures with Downtown include Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak and A-Trak’s Fool’s Gold.
Although Downtown and Mad Decent have worked together before, to release a Santigold mix CD, Diplo told Billboard last summer he wasn’t thinking about joining the label on a permanent basis. "We're not thinking about joint ventures right now,” he said. “We don't have a five-year plan. This is all new to me, making money. But it's cool because we're the first label in the rebirth of the music industry. We saw the whole thing fall down and we're starting with new rules."(Billboard) Producer Diplo, best known for his work with M.I.A., has announced a joint... more

Abe Vigoda is doing that noise tropical punk thing- if you can dig it, and much better than the often-compared-to-ivy-leaguers Vampire Weekend. The sound is sort of thrown together, yet melodic- you’ll find yourself totally immersed in it, get a taste of what’s to come.Abe Vigoda is doing that noise tropical punk thing- if you can dig it, and much better... more
