Automakers used to battle over horsepower. Now it’s miles a gallon. In December, Ford declared that its new 2010 Fusion Hybrid would be the most fuel-efficient midsize car, with 41 miles a gallon in the city (and 36 m.p.g. on the highway). On Monday, Toyota revealed that the new 2010 Prius four-door compact will get 50.

That's about the same as my old VW Jetta TDI. Is that the best they could do? No plug in?

Ford was feeling pressure from competitors, and decided it could not afford to fall behind in the rapidly expanding race to put electric cars in dealer showrooms.

AUTO engineers have been talking for years about the coming “electrification of the automobile.” But as the development of hybrids and pure-electric vehicles has accelerated rapidly across the industry, it’s increasingly difficult to separate the subject of batteries from the cars and trucks they’ll soon be powering.AUTO engineers have been talking for years about the coming “electrification of the... more

The A123 module carries 5,000 watt-hours of usable energy, compared with about 1,300 watt-hours for the battery that is built into the Prius.
The module fits in the well normally occupied by the spare tire, with a charging port installed on the back bumper.
++++++++++++++++++++
I e-mailed Hymotion, expressing interest in their A123 module, but they never replied.
I'm not upset, because like the person in this New York Times Article says: “I don’t have $10,000; I have children.”The A123 module carries 5,000 watt-hours of usable energy, compared with about 1,300... more

In an interview with the Daily Mail to promote "Revolutionary Road," Leonardo DiCaprio also took time to discuss his passion for the environment and the new sports car he just bought:
He's recently traded in his Toyota Prius hybrid car for a £100,000 Tesla, the first high-performance electric car.
'It's my first sports car and it's an unbelievable drive,' he enthuses. 'It's scarily fast and it all happens with the flip of a switch, unlike a piston-driven engine that needs to build up momentum.'In an interview with the Daily Mail to promote "Revolutionary Road," Leonardo DiCaprio... more

March 24, 1989 will forever plague history as one of the worst environmental disasters of our time. Eleven million gallons of oil spilled into the Prince William Sound killing thousands of wildlife and destroying a complex and delicate ecosystem. Exxon promised they would clean up the spill and promised that those affected would get their lives back. Seventeen years later and the people are still waiting for their lives to become "whole" again.March 24, 1989 will forever plague history as one of the worst environmental disasters... more

HONOLULU – Hawaii has unveiled plans to be first in the nation to roll out electric car stations statewide — a move the governor hailed as a major step toward weaning the islands off oil.
Hawaii imports foreign oil for almost 90 percent of its energy needs. One-third of that oil is used to power cars and buses on island streets.
Gov. Linda Lingle said Tuesday the program would help Hawaii meet its goal of slashing fossil fuel use 70 percent by 2030.

With the enormous bailout money up in the air, corporations are doing their best "poor me" impersonations to get a piece of our money.
GM is hinting that if they don't get part of the bailout, they might have to cancel the future projects such as the Chevy Volt. Should the American people be intimidated because GM CEOs chose to go backwards instead of producing cars that America wants and needs?
Does anyone see this as disturbing or a threat? What do you think? With the enormous bailout money up in the air, corporations are doing their best "poor... more

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Call it an economic and environmental murder mystery in the making: Will a cash-strapped Detroit kill the electric car -- again?
Stung by an association with gas-guzzling SUVs and pushed to the brink of failure by plunging sales, U.S. automakers have been touting efforts to roll out more fuel-efficient small cars, gas-saving technology and gas-free electric vehicles.
The star of that marketing show has been the Chevy Volt, a rechargeable car that General Motors Corp is designing to run 40 miles on battery power, meaning some commuters would never need to fill up with gas.
But with its cash dwindling and U.S. auto sales crashing to 25-year lows, GM has joined Ford Motor Co and Chrysler LLC in seeking $25 billion in federal handouts, which are under consideration this week by the U.S. Congress.
That has critics concerned that a meltdown for Detroit could delay the rollout of green cars like the Volt. Others see a chance to prod GM and rivals to move faster as a condition of providing funding the industry says it needs to survive.

Global warming has become such an overriding emergency that some climate experts are willing to consider schemes for partly shielding the planet from the sun's rays. But no such scheme is a magic bullet.
"With a $5-trillion price tag for putting a sunshade in space, maybe it's easier to build wind turbines and solar power plants instead"
I'll say!, and with far less potential of unpredictable and unwanted consequences. What do you think?Global warming has become such an overriding emergency that some climate experts are... more

SAN JOSE, CA (KGO) -- About a year ago, CEO's in Silicon Valley challenged one another to start driving electric. On the eve of a huge conference in San Jose, high tech leaders say the plug-in movement is well underway.
Last week Tom Hayse was getting 40 miles a gallon driving his hybrid Prius. That was before his plug-in conversion and a lithium battery packed in the back.
"With the plug-in hybrid, I'm getting actually getting close to 80 miles a gallon, so I'm pretty happy with that."
Tom is one of 30 Silicon Valley CEO's and community leaders who have pledged to be part of what they call the 'plug-in revolution'.
"If only ten percent of the million or so Prius owners converted their cars like we're doing, the price of the battery conversion would come down," says Sass Somekh, Ph.D of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group.
