SEATTLE, Washington (CNN) -- The homeless men and women shuffle across the frozen ground of the tent camp and surround a steel drum burning wood. They use the flames to cook food and to stay warm.
The tents in Seattle are covered with tarps and plastic sheets to help keep out the elements.

The tents they live in are small, covered by tarps and plastic sheeting to keep water out. Several tents are collapsed under the weight of a recent snowfall.
For Bruce Beavers, however, this camp is just about the best place in the world he could be living right now.
"This is a place for people who lose their jobs, lose their houses, to have some kind of structure and for them to get back out in the world," he says.
Set up in the parking lot of a church near Seattle, Washington, the camp houses anywhere from 50 to 100 homeless people each day.
Residents call it Nickelsville. The name takes a page from the infamous "Hooverville" shantytowns of the Great Depression that were named for a president many thought did not care about their economic hardships. Video Watch resident give tour, explain rules »
Some residents here say they blame Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels and a system they believe makes it difficult to escape homelessness.

We should all have John Leguizamo's kind of December -- he gets to open two films this year.
And while one, the ensemble comedy/drama Nothing Like The Holidays, has him as a featured player, the other, the independent social drama Where God Left His Shoes, is pretty much his show. In it, he plays a father who, with his step-son in tow, hits the New York streets one cold, Christmas eve in order to find the qualifying job that will get his homeless family into an apartment in time for the holidays.
I was able to talk to Leguizamo about the rigors of shooting on the cheap, and in the bargain got some unexpected insights into the casts of both films. We should all have John Leguizamo's kind of December -- he gets to open two films... more

"At 5 a.m. on any given day, Anne Mahlum could be found running the dark streets of Philadelphia -- with homeless men cheering her on as she passed their shelter. But one morning last spring, she stopped in her tracks."
Rather than continuing to run by day after day, she contacted the shelter, got donations for running gear and back in July of '07, the "Back On My Feet" club hit the streets.
The club involves more than 54 homeless members and 250 volunteers from 3 Philadelphia homeless shelters. The group has logged over 5,000 miles.
In order for a homeless shelter member to participate in the club, they must be clear and sober for 30 days. Mahlum says, "All you can tell is who's the fastest...You can't tell who's homeless and who's not."
In addition to quitting smoking and losing weight, the Back On My Feet club is helping members take classes, learn computer and interview skills and has helped members find jobs.

Homeless youth are a very prevalent part of the day to day street landscape in Portland, OR. There daily lifestyles often don't mesh well with the socially accepted ways of going about one's day. Outside In Medical Clinic developed the Road Warrior Project to accommodate the hard to reach street youth who don't feel as accepted in a normal clinic setting. During Road Warrior, youth are able to access basic social services, hang out with friends, and develop skills and a plan to rebuild their lives.Homeless youth are a very prevalent part of the day to day street landscape in... more

I was there that day with the vets, capturing their stories, documenting their exchange in front of News Corporation. The next day, O'Reilly had spun it to look like... well, you already know how O'Reilly rolls. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) homeless youth often endure disproportionate hardships because of their sexual orientation; they not only face the obstacle of surviving on the streets but also the stigma of belonging to a sexual minority. Violence and harrasment in homeless shelters causes many LGBT youth to choose the streets. As a result, they suffer from higher rates of physical and sexual victimization, addictive substance abuse, psychopathological disorders, and riskier sexual behavior (National Gay and Lesbian Task Force 2007). To combat this problem, many cities have opened LGBT specific shelters, but Chicago has yet to follow. Since Chicago streets are dangerous and youth shelters equally so, many kids are left with no alternatives.Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) homeless youth often endure... more
