As attorney Eric Seitz has said regarding parole, the Peltier case is one of “original jurisdiction”. That classification is the result of a number of factors–including the seriousness of the “offense,” the fact that Mr. Peltier is serving life sentences, and also because this is such a high-profile case.
Procedurally, this means the examiner made a recommendation sometime following the hearing on July 28. The application for parole was then forwarded to the regional commissioner apparently, who also reviewed the case and made a recommendation (the same as a vote, in this instance). The case was then forwarded to the four sitting executive commissioners in Washington (or Chevy Chase, MD, right outside of DC). The parole decision will be made by majority vote.
According to parole guidelines:
“Upon receipt of an original jurisdiction case, the National Commissioners, where feasible, shall process the case within 21 days. Cases shall be voted on sequentially.”As attorney Eric Seitz has said regarding parole, the Peltier case is one of... more

Greetings. I just got off the telephone with Leonard. He asked me to tell you that we must 'keep up the pressure, we can't relax' so I'm passing on that message.
On a personal note - he sounded good. His health continues to be an issue but nothing deeply pressing at the moment (ie we will be dealing with this later - parole first) - so your thoughts, prayers and sage have worked. Of course, he's wondering about the future and there was discussion around that. He expressed deep gratitude to everyone - certainly to the witnesses of the day - Peter, Thom and the Turtle Mtn representative. To the people who were at Lewisburg that day. Of course his family members who continue on this journey with him. To the many around this country and the world that held gatherings, vigils. And to you - all of the online supporters who have made, and continue to make such impact. He liked the idea of what we all did last week with The White House suggestion emails. Said to say thank you to all the supporters from the various foreign countries, such as this week's push from Canada.
Much of our conversation centered around the messages I needed to pass on from you and that he wanted to be clear with me you know how grateful he is to everyone. I told him that you feel the gratitude; hope that's all right.
So...we keep going. Keep the calls, messages etc up this week. His patience level is pretty good - so for me, I'm trying to follow his example.
Thank you - will let you know any news I hear this week.
Peace,

An Open Letter to Barack Obama
Symbolism Alone Will Not Bring Change
By LEONARD PELTIER
I have watched with keen interest and renewed hope as your campaign has mobilized millions of Americans behind your message of changing a political system that serves a small economic elite at the expense of the peoples of the United States and the world. Your election as president of the United States, where slaves and Indians were long considered less than human under the law, will undoubtedly constitute a historic moment in race relations in the United States.
Yet symbolism alone will not bring about change. Our young people, black and Native alike, suffer from police brutality and racial profiling, underfunded schools, and discrimination in employment and housing. I sincerely hope your campaign will inspire some hope among our youth to struggle for a better future. I am, however, concerned that your recent statement on the Sean Bell verdict, in which the New York police officers who fired 50 shots at a young man on the eve of his wedding were acquitted of criminal charges, displays a rather myopic view of the law. Until the law is harnessed to protect the victims of state violence and racism, it will serve as an instrument of repression, just as the slave codes functioned to sustain and legitimize an inhuman institution.

Friends,
I thought you might like to listen to the interview Wanbli did with Leonard’s attorney, Eric Seitz, who will be handling the parole hearing which is coming up on July 28th. The link is:
LISTEN http://www.nativetube.com/video/546/Leonards-parole-attorney-Eric-Seitz
Within the interview, Eric highlights several action items we can be doing now, in these final days before the hearing:
1. Lay a good foundation to create favorable public opinion for Leonard to be paroled with everyone you know.
2. You can google archived editorials from the NY Times, Post and Boston Globe on granting Leonard parole. THEN – take these to your local newspaper, ask them to publish an editorial ASAP regarding granting parole. If you achieve this, please let us know, so we can let our legal team know.
3. Get your elected officials to weigh on on granting Leonard parole. Ask them to write a letter and fed ex to the LP DOC (address is on the www.whoisleonardpeltier.in
fo site). We will then get the letters to the attorney.
Obviously the time frame is critical. Thank you, thank you for your efforts. We are more optimistic, and with good reason, than we have been in 20 years. This is the first time Leonard has truly, absolutely qualified on all criteria for parole. We must be realistic, but there is reason to believe the climate for parole is more favorable now than in the past.
We are so grateful for your support. Leonard is more grateful that you can possibly know. We tell him your efforts – he hears the messages you send us. He knows the massive nature of support. Now, we must make the parole board know…with your help we will achieve that.
Peace,
LP DOC Leadership TeamLeonard Peltier

The International Indian Treaty Council and Longest Walk's human right forum
EDWARDSVILLE, Illinois – The International Indian Treaty Council and the Longest Walk focused on human rights as inherent rights of Indigenous Peoples, as the walkers arrived for prayers at Cahokia Mounds and the St. Louis Arch, the gateway to the west.
For the Longest Walkers on the northern route, it was the gateway to the east, marking the completion of three-fourths of their sacred walk for Mother Earth. Walkers left Alcatraz Island on Feb. 11 and will arrive in Washington D.C. on July 11. Of the 3,600-mile trek, only 860 miles remain.
Speaking during the human rights forum at Southern Illinois University on May 9, Andrea Carmen, executive director of the International Indian Treaty Council, described the evolution of this new era of Indigenous Peoples rights.
Carmen recalled the words of survivors.....

It's a momentous day in cyberspace. You remember those:
Your first screen name
Your first chatroom experience
Finding that you can still be cool even without America Online
Creating your Facebook profile for the first time
Making your first website
Uploading your first Youtube video
Ah yes, pleasant were the days of yore.
Well, yore's days are still with us, because today, Gmail made it possible to chat with your AIM friends without even signing in to AIM. You heard that right. Gchat combines the two programs and organizes your AIM contacts right alongside your Gchat contacts, putting the online friends and more-commonly-chatted-with friends at the top of the list.
This innovation seems to exhibit what I've noticed about Google's strategy lately. They don't so much want to compete alongside major brands with a similar product as much as provide cool programs that enhance the consumer's experience with the product. That way they can build favor in the market without stepping on any competitor's toes. Google is the all-star of information gathering and accessibility.
If you were a holdout against Gmail, hopefully now you're jealous enough to want it.
Ever play Pac-Man? That gobbly character that eats up all the dots on the board and has a knack for tropical fruit? Well now Gchat is Pac-Man and AIM is a dot. It's a momentous day in cyberspace. You remember those:
