England coach Fabio Capello has announced that John Terry will be the national side's captiain in the run-up to the 2010 World Cup.
Capello had previously chosen Rio Ferdinand to captain the side, but said that Terry's big personality was the key in his decision:
"The big personality of John was the reason I chose him but Rio is very important to the team"
Obviously quite chuffed, especially given his poor run of form at the end of last season, ahem, penalties, he said:
"I think everybody realises it means the world to me to retain the armband. To get the armband back is a huge achievement for me."
"I heard about an hour before the news conference, just after training. The manager called the whole squad together and told us as a whole.

Following what can only be described as a season full of let downs, John Terry missing out on being able to captain his country could've turned him into a big sobbing baby again.
But as part of his selection process for the position of England skipper, Fabio Capello has given the Chelsea defender a chance to show he can rise above Manchester United grabbing the Champion's League and Premiership from Terry's cherished Chelsea.
Besides from the rotation process Capello is using to establish his permanent skipper, he said that when he told JT he was going to be captain, he was 'very, very happy.'

New England manager Fabio Capello has revealed the strict rules he has enforced on the England players in a bid to introduce more discipline and unity within the team, something which he believes is necessary for their success.
Gone are the days of specialist treatment for certain players, everyone is now to turn up on time with any 'lateness' reportedly being unacceptable, they will also see a complete ban on mobiles except in their private rooms as well as now being expected to wear the traditional 'smart dress' whenever they are on duty as England representatives.
Capello also insisted previous manager, Steve McClaren's 'friendly' approach will be given a wide berth, with him stating that discipline should come from the manager, something the players are already feeling. Rio Ferdinand spoke to Sky Sports about the changes Capello has introduced, saying “he calls me and a lot of the other players by our surnames. His coaching staff call us by surname as well. That’s the way it is."
So, it seems the players have accepted Capello's new rules, I'm sure the press will as well, so long as tonight's debut outing as England manager brings a win against Switzerland.

The press have waited patiently with baited breath for the new England manager's first press conference, itching for that initial announcement in the run-up to his, hopefully, premier outing as England manager, as expected he delivered , but still in Italian.
Naming his squad at an FA press conference, Capello spoke via a translated feed from Soho Square, explaining his choice of Gerrard for the coveted captian's armband, "Gerrard is important because he can pass on things, transmit things and inspire the players."
He also insisted that choosing Gerrard was not a permanent move, something I'm sure injured John Terry will be happy to hear. Capello evaded questions about his failure to include Beckham in his squad coyly, by also explaining why he had not stuck to his initial promise to address the English nation in their native language. He pondered for a second and then explained that it was down to the very people he was sat before, the media, and their apparent abilities at 'twisting words' out of context, something he believed they could exploit in him and his new 'regime' should he try and hold press conferences in English.
Should the national coach address the country he has chosen to manage, and essentially represent, in their native language?
I'm sure some will see this as Capello's first mistake, with it seeming as though he has snubbed speaking English for fear of how the press will translate it. Sadly, those people will have been the very ones who were sat in the same room as him at Soho Square.
