The New York Philharmonic has reported a record deficit for last season, $4.6 million, and said it projects a shortfall of about $4 million this season. Eric Latzky, the orchestra’s spokesman, said on Friday that the reason for last year’s red ink was a shortfall in annual fund-raising amid the recession. The orchestra fell shy of its $25 million goal by $3.75 million.
“We are dealing with longer-term deficits now,” Mr. Latzky said. “There is no question that the economic environment has had a significant impact on the New York Philharmonic. We’re looking for solutions for that situation.” Mr. Latzky said some measures had already been taken, including staff salary freezes, scaled-back parks concerts and the use of fewer substitute players. “Our goal is to protect the artistic vision, absolutely, and to build that,” he said.
Last season’s budget of $64.5 million has risen to $68.9 million this season. As at any orchestra, the largest expense comes from musician salaries and benefits. The orchestra’s contract expires after next season. Mr. Latzky declined to comment on whether management would seek a reduction in compensation. A recent effort to cut salaries at the Cleveland Orchestra has prompted the players there to threaten a strike. The New York Philharmonic has reported a record deficit for last season, $4.6 million,... more

It's Beethoven vs. iBeer, Shostakovich vs. Slacker Radio, Prokofiev vs. Pocket God. The 99-year-old San Diego Symphony, along with several other orchestras, has entered the iPhone app arena, and classical music may never be the same.
“There's a huge opportunity before the classical music community, which is to really look at democratizing access to the music,” said Margo Drakos, chief operating officer of San Diego's InstantEncore, the two-year-old company that developed the free application and is quickly becoming a global force in classical music.
Modeled after an application InstantEncore created in June for the New York Philharmonic, it went live last week. It offers users access to all things San Diego Symphony through its connection with InstantEncore's free Web site and the symphony's Web site.
Users may initially employ the app primarily for information, but its game-changing potential lies in its ability to provide an orchestra's performances on demand and network with listeners and even the artists.
“The Internet has caused an enormous disruption for the way media and content is received,” Drakos said. “And in the case of classical music, while certain models are dying out, there are new, amazing models emerging.”
For instance, you used to have to go to the concert hall to hear a concert. The new model: If you want to listen to a performance by the San Diego Symphony while jogging, working, driving or whenever, it's only a few screen touches away. Or maybe you would rather hear the the London Philharmonic, the St. Louis Symphony or the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, all of which have InstantEncore-powered apps.
“Our job in our Web site is to the curator of all the information on the Internet regarding classical music,” said Stensrud, whose goal is to make InstantEncore the Google of classical music. “And we now have over 65,000 concert listings, we have over 700 hours of classical live music, we have thousands of videos and thousands of podcasts and thousands of news clippings.”
For the orchestra, there's no money to be made on its iPhone app or its digital downloads. It's about exposure and connection. It's Beethoven vs. iBeer, Shostakovich vs. Slacker Radio, Prokofiev vs. Pocket... more

Mr. Drucker, 80, will soon enter something bigger than folklore. Legend maybe? History? He is retiring from the Philharmonic after 60 years, the longest tenure of any player in the orchestra’s existence. His departure foreshadows another changing of the guard: the music director, Lorin Maazel, also ends his tenure this season.
On Saturday and Tuesday, Mr. Drucker is to give his final solo performances with the orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall, playing Aaron Copland’s Concerto. He is also on tap for performances at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on Friday and at Tilles Center in Brookville, N.Y., on June 19.Mr. Drucker, 80, will soon enter something bigger than folklore. The New York Philharmonic Orchestra arrived in North Korea today ahead of their concert in the communist country tomorrow. The concert will be broadcast live over state TV and the group is also offering masters classes for North Korean students. North Korea even apparently tore down the anti-American posters that usually line the streets in Pyongyang ahead of the Philharmonic's arrival. The next stop on the Asian tour is a concert in South Korea on Thursday. The New York Philharmonic Orchestra arrived in North Korea today ahead of their... more

New York's Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the U.S. national anthem at its historic concert in North Korea on 26 February. The Philharmonic's president says that this concert will show how "music can unite."
Don't freak out, they will be playing other music too. The N. Korean anthem and Gershwin's "American in Paris" are also on the program.
Is it kinda weird to make this historic journey to play this monumental concert, and your program consists of the U.S. national anthem? Shouldn't the NY Philharmonic branch out a bit, show the world we aren't "U.S.centric?" New York's Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the U.S. national anthem at its... more
