HBO announced on Tuesday that they are filming Paul Reubens' Broadway production of "The Pee-Wee Herman Show" for a special to be shown early next year.
The cable network first introduced the character to a national audience in a 1981 special, taped at the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles, which served as the basis for the Tim Burton-directed film "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," as well as the Emmy-winning Saturday morning TV series "Pee-wee's Playhouse."
The new "Pee-Wee" special will be taped once the show ends its run on Jan. 2. It will reunite several Playhouse characters including Mailman Mike, Cowboy Curtis, Miss Yvonne, Pterri the Pterodactyl, Jambi the Genie, and Chairry.

The man with the high-pitched laugh and bowtie is finally back – and dishing exclusive details on his recently-completed screenplay for “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse: The Movie.”
These days, Pee-wee is actually quite busy putting the final touches on “The Pee-wee Herman Show,” a live multimedia stage production that runs at L.A.’s Club Nokia for several weeks beginning January 12th. If those dates go well, Reubens hopes it will show Hollywood that moviegoers would pay to see a “Playhouse” flick that would have Pee-wee and such old friends as Jambi the genie and Magic Screen leaving the playhouse after one of their own goes missing.The man with the high-pitched laugh and bowtie is finally back – and dishing... more

"Rosie Live" was not well received by the critics or the mass audience, to put it mildly. I love Rosie and I love variety, but they need TLC, time and the right elements to shine, and they were all in scarce supply the night before Thanksgiving. Some critics said it proves variety is dead, but they clearly know not of the scientific method.
Saturday Night Live is essentially live variety. They keep the pie in the face routines to a minimum, however. Corny barely worked on "Hee Haw." Camp works in the hands of geniuses like Paul Reubens and John Waters. A great prime time live show that captures generational pop culture like 'Ed Sullivan,' combined with the off-beat 'SNL' precursor 'Laugh-In,' revisits some of the best elements of the live entertainment format now dedicated to dancing stars, singing idols and judging panel antics.
As has been well noted, the glory in life comes from not ever falling, but in rising every time we fall. While Rosie O'Donnell has many talents, she is a first rate actress. Cher went through a phase when she was out of flavor, and she humbly focused on series of interesting character roles while her career had a late-life renaissance, capped off by a Golden Globe, New York Film Critic Circle, National Board of Review and Oscar for 1988's Moonstruck.
