Charla Nash, the woman who received severe injuries after being attacked by a chimp, has spoken about her face transplant.
In a documentary to be shown on Channel 5 in the UK, Nash tells the story of how she lost most of her facial features, her ears and both hands during the 2009 attack from chimp Travis.
After undergoing transplant surgery in June 2011 during a 20-hour operation, Charla now has a new face, though she will need to take drugs for the rest of her life to help prevent her body rejecting the new tissue.
You can see the full story in Extraordinary People: The Woman Who Lost Her Face – Thursday 26th November at 9pm on Channel 5.

Connie Culp was shot by her husband in the face in a murder-suicide attempt. She says that she realizes that the media wants to focus on her but that she would prefer to focus on the generosity and strength of the donor family. I posted this because I know some people think that all plastic surgery is bad or that facial reconstruction surgery is cosmetic. The article explains that the surgery was just the first of many that Connie needs to restore function. Because of this surgery she is now able to smell and taste- two thing that seem small but life seem bland without them.
I think that this technology is amazing, given that 80 years ago the only options for patients like Ms.Culp was a crude mask that only covered their injury and did nothing to improve function. A woman who had suffered severe facial trauma got essentially a whole new face in a first-of-its-kind operation at the Cleveland Clinic, hospital officials said Wednesday.
Only the woman’s upper eyelids, forehead, lower lip and chin were left — the other 80 percent of her face was replaced with one donated from a female cadaver during the 22-hour surgery about two weeks ago.
The patient’s name and age were not released, nor details on how she was injured. Her injuries were so horrific that she lacked a nose and palate, and could not eat or breathe on her own without a special opening into her windpipe.
After the transplant, “I must tell you how happy she was when with both her hands she could go over her face and feel that she has a nose, feel that she has a jaw,” said the lead surgeon, Dr. Maria Siemionow.
This transplant being the First of it's kind could open the door to other severely injured patients.
