Celebs of every style are starting to break out the [hopefully faux] furs, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t do the same. Though furs have been considered a symbol of luxury and elegance for centuries, they don’t have to be expensive. Faux furs, both animal-friendly and affordable, can be equally as fashionable and chic when worn the right way. This week, we’ll be exploring the fur trend for each style. But first, a few pointers that can help you out no matter how you decide to strut your stuff. With winter quickly approaching, there’s really no better time than now to discuss... more

It may not to late to save more than 90,000 Namibian seals from cruel clubbing.
Namibian govt officials say the annual seal hunt is on with over 90,000 seals expected to be clubbed to death.
African seals have been a UN listed endangered species since 1977, with 23 former island colonies extinct. The government has even confirmed that 44% - 62% of pups do not make it their first year.
In a recent Seal Alert-SA press release Hugo explained the front and back door negotiations in play. http://sealalertsa.wordpress.com/
The Seal 'business' in Namibia is dead. World economic slump, bans in the US and EU, poor demand for luxury fur fashion goods, no fur buyers, surplus of unsold seal skins, a declining seal population - and a sealing industry that wants to sell-out for $14 million. Something the Namibian govt must now come to terms with, and now look at alternative economic solutions.
Clubbing cruelly these seal pups is senseless and idiotic, as Namibia's last fur buyer, still has 20 000 skins from the 23 000 he bought in 2008, and cannot even sell these, and has placed no orders for 2009.
Whilst Seal Alert-SA bangs on the back-door to end the cull and continues its efforts to publicly raise $14 million US dollars to buyout the industry, it has now asked the World Society for Protection of Animals (WSPA) and the Humane Society International (HSI) to politely knock on the front-door of the Namibian Govt, and make it an offer nobody can refuse.
Namibia has started clubbing and stabbing 80 000 baby seals on Sunday, July 1, 2007. It is now the 2nd week into Namibia's baby seal cull. In an effort to halt the cull of 80 000 baby seals (right now), please tell everyone you know about this.

Bobcat fur coats have become a hot item among the fashion-conscious in Russia and China, leading to a big jump in prices and exports for the soft, spotted pelts.
The fur's booming popularity has some wildlife advocates worried about possible overtrapping of the cats, which are so reclusive that most states do not know just how many exist.
Bobcat pelts now draw some of the highest prices among trapped furs, recently commanding as much as $550 for a single hide. As the price has gone up, the number of bobcat skins exported by the U.S. has nearly tripled in five years, to 49,700 in 2006.

So I'm popping down to Swiss Cottage Library, and the lady behind the counter looks at me sort of funny when I ask her if I can take out a Red Kangaroo hide. "Well," I say to her, "the dead animal library at Berkley University would have it."
Stranger than Night At The Museum (and funnier, man Ben Stiller sucks), Berkley's collection of skulls and skins causes one to reach the kind of shock and awe we've come become accustomed to. Okay, it's a bit sciencey, but there are some amazing pelts, and even more amazing, the way Prof Jim Patton seems to toss them around.
Quote of the day (Prof Patton): "Capybara. Tastes just like chicken." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capybara Mmm, yes Jim, if anyone would know. Did that pelt just move??

I'm a grassroots activist and started a campaign a few months back to convince Google to stop advertising fur.
Google is now a crucial player in the global fur trade.
Please see http://furisevil.org to see how Google does business with everyone in the fur trade, including fur farms in China, from the very same region featured in a horrific video of a raccoon dog being skinned alive.
Just recently, PeTA has added their weight to the cause, and I encourage everyone who cares about dogs, cats, rabbits, foxes, mink, sable and the many other animals trapped in the fur trade to go to PeTA's petition and send a strong message to Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt.
My campaign is not related to PeTA, but I am really glad they're beginning to focus their attention on it. You'll find a link to their petition on our site.
Google could do a world of good by banning fur ads on their global advertising network.
Even Current TV's website is showing fur ads by Google!
Please visit the FurIsEvil.org site, sign PeTA's petition and help nudge Google into the 21st Century.

Found flier warns of terrorist protesters.
A flier found in Portland warns that “terrorist” animal rights activists are…watch out…being effective!
Ongoing anti-fur protests by Portland animal rights activists have helped shut down one fur salon, Schumacher Furs. (The owner unsuccessfully tried to retaliate by calling on federal prosecutors to use the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act against the protesters).
Now activists are protesting Ungar Furs. But be careful, everyone, the grammatically-impaired right-wingers of the Republic of Portland are not going to take your Constitutionally-protected activity lying down!
“Why wait till they are in front of your business protesting. Stop these Terrorists now! There is something called The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act that is supposed to protect merchants from these people but the left wingers who run Portland will not stand up for decent folk trying to make a living. If they were protesting in front of a gay vegan hemp store, you bet your ass the city would be trying to stop them. Enough is enough. The last time I looked this was America.”
And the last time I looked there was still a First Amendment.
But hold up, forget all of my typical “protect the Constitution” rhetoric. Gay vegan hemp store? How have I never heard of this magical place?
If such a place were to exist, it would truly represent a “domestic terrorist” Axis of Evil. On this site we’ve seen how Pat Boone is fighting “sexual jihadists” and homo-grown terrorism. We’ve seen how “vegetarians are terrorist scum.” And we’ve seen how environmental activists like Tim DeChristopher are “eco-terrorists.”
This store would reflect a dangerous new development in the War on Terror, and the unification of the gays, the vegans and the hippies into the Holy Trinity of Terrorism.
Maybe it could move in to the vegan mini-mall? I hear the hemp-lovers at Food Fight have a vegan cheese pump.By Will Potter

Want to have a killer look without killing animals? Tim Gunn will help you "make it work"! Long before the success of Project Runway and Tim Gunn's Guide to Style made him a household name, Gunn was a friend of PETA and animals.
When he was the chair of the Department of Fashion Design at Parsons School of Design, Gunn started a program allowing PETA representatives to give presentations to students so that they could see for themselves what happens to animals who are tortured and killed for their fur. When Gunn became the chief creative officer at Liz Claiborne Inc., he invited PETA to show video footage depicting how animals are treated by the fashion industry worldwide and to present the many viable alternatives to animal fur.
Now Gunn is speaking up for animals again! But this time, Gunn wants you, the consumer, to know what animals endure in the name of fashion so that you can make informed decisions before buying clothing and accessories made from fur, wool, and leather. Gunn has become the latest celebrity to lend his voice to animals by narrating PETA's new skins video which he sent with a personal appeal to Donna Karan and Giorgio Armani, who both use rabbit fur in their collections.
Tim Gunn believes that people should make educated choices, and we hope that you'll do that each and every time you shop. With so many alternatives to fur, wool, leather, and exotic skins available, there's no reason to wear animals. As Tim would say, "Make it work"!
Watch Tim Gunn's interview on PETA's blog The PETA Files.
Please take a stand to help animals exploited and killed in the name of fashion by pledging to wear alternatives to fur, wool, and leather today!

‘Ethical’ fur exposed: the case for a fur-free Christmas
Nov 24, 2008
A film released this month has exposed the horrifying extent of animal suffering in Norway’s fur farms, providing a timely reminder of the true cost of fur and fur-trims for all seasonal shoppers.
The film, produced by the Norwegian Network for Animal Freedom, can be viewed on their website. It is both distressing and distressingly representative.
Throughout 2008, the group obtained legal entry to 120 of Norway’s 500 fur farms to complete their study. Every single one was violating animal welfare law.
In countries like China, that provide most of the world’s fur but where animals have no legal protection, the suffering can only be worse.
Trust the label?
The film shatters the myth that Norway produces ‘ethical’ fur.
Despite Norwegian and Finnish fur producers using the ‘prestigious’ Saga Furs and Origin Assured labels – supposed to guarantee the utmost care for animal welfare – the truth is that the conditions are shockingly bad.
The footage shows one young fox with missing limbs, separated from his siblings, dragging himself around a barren cage.
Network for Animal Freedom has given its evidence to the Norwegian police and environmental authorities.
FoxSticker_150When you are shopping this Christmas – or at any time – the only label that truly demonstrates animal protection is the Fur Free Fox logo, awarded by the Fur Free Alliance.
The case for a ban
Norway already has legislation to protect fur animals and in 1998 the government even warned that fur farming would be phased out unless conditions for animals improved.
But ten years on, conditions are as bad as ever.
This investigation, while focussed on Norway, has far broader repercussions. It proves that legislation designed to protect fur-farmed animals is not enough to stop the shocking levels of suffering that they experience.
Unlike farm animals, the nature and needs of the species used for fur – such as minks, foxes, chinchillas, dogs and cats – means there is simply no way to rear them in farm conditions without significantly compromising their welfare.
Just say no
Fur farming can only exist in response to consumer demand, which has growth in recent years.
You can make a stand against cruelty by refusing to buy fur and by telling your friends what is really involved in making a fur coat or fur trim.
To make a further positive stand against fur, learn more from the Fur Free Alliance, and vote in their Design Against Fur student poster competition – the public vote is open until the end of November >>‘Ethical’ fur exposed: the case for a fur-free Christmas
