Men are more likely to die from inoperable non-small cell lung cancer than women, U.S. researchers report.
In fact, gender is the most important factor influencing overall survival of patients with this disease, the new study found.
A team of researchers in six U.S. cities studied 1,365 patients enrolled in national group trials to determine the effect of such sociodemographic factors as gender, race and marital status on lung cancer outcomes.
They found that men had a 1.23 times higher death rate than women, while race and marital status didn't significantly affect outcomes.
"Our study corroborates the fact that gender plays an important role as a prognostic factor in people diagnosed with lung cancer," the lead author, Dr. Benjamin Movsas, chair of the radiation oncology department at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, said in a news release. "This underscores the importance of studying this disease entity in light of the fact that women diagnosed with lung cancer tend to have a better outcome in terms of survival."
The study was to be presented Thursday at the Chicago Multidisciplinary Symposium in Thoracic Oncology.
At the same meeting, another group of U.S. researchers, from the South West Oncology Group, reported that a combination of traditional chemotherapy with targeted therapies called monoclonal antibodies was safe and improved survival of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer.
The study found that the use of two targeted therapies (bevacizumab and cetuximab) with chemotherapy (carboplatin and paclitaxel) as first-line treatment improved the survival of 104 patients who were evaluated between August 2006 and September 2007. There were no safety concerns.
"The combination of multiple targeted therapies in addition to chemotherapy may be the future of treatment in lung cancer," lead author Dr. Edward Kim, an assistant professor in the department of thoracic/head and neck medical oncology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, said in a news release. "Blocking more key cancer pathways such as the epidermal growth factor receptor and vascular endothelial growth factor may lead to improved cancer control."
In 2008, about 215,000 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and 161,840 people will die from the disease, according to the U.S. National Cancer Institute.Men are more likely to die from inoperable non-small cell lung cancer than women, U.S.... more

The "pregnant man" who gave birth to a daughter earlier this year says he is expecting a second child.
Thomas Beatie, a married man who used to be a woman, has told America's ABC News that after giving birth to Susan on June 29 he did not go back on the male hormone testosterone so he could have another baby.
"I feel good," he told ABC News' Barbara Walters. "I had my checkups ... And everything is right on track."
Beatie, who lives with his wife Nancy in Bend, Oregon, said the baby is due on June 12.
Beatie was born a woman but underwent hormone therapy before he was legally declared a man.
He had a mastectomy but kept his female reproductive organs when he underwent a sex change in the late 1990s.
He and Nancy decided they wanted to start a family and he underwent artificial insemination late last year.
Walters said on her television talkshow, "The View," that Beatie had revealed his second pregnancy to her during an interview for a documentary to air on U.S. television Friday night.
Beatie spoke to Walters about Susan's birth, which was not via Caesarean section.
Prior to her birth, he released a photo showing his bearded face and pregnant belly. It sparked a worldwide media frenzy. The "pregnant man" who gave birth to a daughter earlier this year says he is... more

The risk is even higher if they skimp on sleep and tend to have a hike in blood pressure at night, a problem known as the riser pattern. Most healthy people have a drop in blood pressure at bedtime.
Those who got limited sleep and also had the riser pattern were more than four times as likely to have heart attacks and strokes as those without the combination, according to the study published this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
It's not clear whether the shorter sleep times were due to insomnia, sleep apnea, or other problems, or exactly how much time the study subjects actually spent snoozing. (Or whether they were taking any medication for sleep issues, for that matter.) Financial Crisis has badly effectetd the mental health of people all over the world, health studies say that 80 % of the diseases arise from mental stress, it clearly hints the coming health disaster ready to engulf the Mankind accross the world. As there is no effective cure for mental stress, the modern medical science can only give drugs having enormous side effects and addiction. Guru Siyag, a Spiritual Master from India has proved that, mental stress can be easily treated using the original Yoga Philosophy( Not the present form of artificial Yoga and Meditation involving a mere physical exercise).
Guru Siyag’s Siddha Yoga is a practical method of complete development of Human Being, based on solid principles of Vedic Science, the ancient Indian Philosophy. When we say complete development of Human Being, there is no question of any Mental, Physical or Spiritual disorder remaining untreated in the Human Body, Guru Siayg clarified that the Siddha Yoga aims at the next development of Human Body, divine transformation of Mankind, to attain a divine bodily-form.
At present, the prevailing financial crisis have badly effected the world economy, causing mental stress and related diseases, making it more difficult to live a peaceful and healthy life. The newly invented “Method of Meditation” as discovered by Guru Siyag, has proved to be a effective method to treat mental stress and all other related diseases, without any medicine or drugs. Surprisingly, it is imparted absolutely Free of Cost by Guru Siyag, to every Huamn Being of the World. No training, nor learning and nothing to practice, it is absolutely “Automatic” process controlled by the Supreme Power which resides in every Human Body, under the Control of Guru Siyag, ” Telepathically”. Yes, a mere Photograph of Guru Siyag serves as a Medium to induce this “Automatic” Spiritual Meditation and Siddha Yoga in any Human Body, sitting in any corner of the World, you dont even have to meet Guru Siayg, face to face, because he induces this spiritual power telepathically. All you need is to download a colour print out of the “Method of Meditation” page from www.the-comforter.org Guru Siyag is the “World’s Only Non-Commercial Guru” , imparting the benefits of his new invention, “Siddha Yoga” to every Human Being, absolutely “Free of Cost”.
It takes “ONLY 15 MIN’S TO EXPERIMENT IT PRACTICALLY”, NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE, NOR ANY KIND OF LEARNING OR PRACTICE REQUIRED, NO EFFORT FROM YOUR SIDE, IT IS A TOTALLY AUTOMATIC PROCESS, IN WHICH YOUR BODY WILL UNDERGO AUTOMATIC PHYSICAL BODY MOVEMENTS, INDUCED AND CONTROLLED BY GURU SIYAG’S PHOTOGRAPH. IT IS SO SIMPLE THAT EVEN A CHILD CAN DO IT AT HOME. THE BENEFITS ARE UNLIMITED AND BEYOND IMAGINATION, AS IT HAS HAPPENED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND, “THE TRANSFORMATION OF MANKIND” TO ATTAIN A “DIVINE BODILY-FORM”.

There is real hope that what’s happening in a Houston lab might lead to a cure for HIV.
“We have found an innovative way to kill the virus by finding this small region of HIV that is unchangeable,” Dr. Sudhir Paul of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston said.
Dr. Paul and Dr. Miguel Escobar aren’t talking about just suppressing HIV – they’re talking about destroying it permanently by arming the immune system with a new weapon lab tests have shown to be effective.
“We’ve discovered the weak spot of HIV,” he said.
Paul and his team have zeroed in on a section of a key protein in HIV’s structure that does not mutate.
“The virus needs at least one constant region, and that is the essence of calling it the Achilles heel,” Paul said.
That Achilles heel is the doctors’ way in. They take advantage of it with something called an abzyme.
Basically, their idea could be used to control the disease for people who already have it and prevent infection for those at risk.
The theory has held up in lab and animal testing. The next step is human trials.
The doctors still need funding to launch human trials. In the world of HIV research, that’s often where things fall apart.
“Clinical trials are very expensive,” Paul said.
“That is the worry of the researcher. This is what nightmares are made of – that after 30 years of work, you find it doesn’t work,” Paul said.
But so far, it is working.
“This is the holy grail of HIV research, to develop a preventative vaccine,” Paul said. There is real hope that what’s happening in a Houston lab might lead to a cure... more

The South tips the scales again as the nation's fattest region, according to a new government survey.
More than 30 percent of adults in Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee are considered obese. In part, experts blame Southern eating habits, poverty and demographic groups that have higher obesity rates.
Colorado was the least obese, with about 19 percent fitting that category in a random telephone survey done last year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The 2007 findings are similar to results from the same survey the three previous years. Mississippi has had the highest obesity rate every year since 2004. But Alabama, Tennessee, West Virginia and Louisiana have also clustered near the top of the list, often so close that the difference between their rates and Mississippi's may not be statistically significant. The South tips the scales again as the nation's fattest region, according to a... more

A new six-part BBC series, starting this week, looks at the newest research from around the world to find out what could it be that makes us happy.
We all want to be happy but the problem has always been that you can't measure happiness.
Happiness has always been seen as too vague a concept, as Lord Layard, Professor of Economics at the LSE and author of "Happiness - lessons from a new science" points out.
"There is a problem with the word happiness.
"When you use the word happy, it often has the sort of context of balloons floating up into the sky or something frivolous."
Now scientists say they can actually measure happiness.
Neuroscientists are measuring pleasure. They suggest that happiness is more than a vague concept or mood; it is real. A new six-part BBC series, starting this week, looks at the newest research from... more

WASHINGTON - Marijuana potency increased last year to the highest level in more than 30 years, posing greater health risks to people who may view the drug as harmless, according to a report released Thursday by the White House.
Okay so we spend billion in fighting a drug war, and rapist get an average of 5-10 years and serve about 2, Child molesters get an average of 3-5 and serve about 2, drug dealer gets caught with a pound of marijuana gets 25? Serves about 15??? WTF??? Why is our nation more concerned with criminalizing so much and not punishing those that are violent and cause us real problems?? Anyone wonder why violent crime is so high? try because when you criminalize things it attracts criminals. This is crazy, the potency of pot increases and they think now that all kids who smoke dope are going to do heroin? Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) of 2008 is expected to be signed into law by President Bush soon.
GINA will amend laws to prohibit a group health plan from adjusting premium or contribution amounts for a group on the basis of genetic information.
Reluctance to get genetic tests range from being fired, priced out of health insurance or dropped from coverage altogether.
Having been used to diagnose fetal problems for inherited diseases, the scope of testing has expanded in the last decade.
There are now about 1,500 genetic tests.
Washington’s Public Citizen group stated that some people have been misled by inaccurate results, and industry oversight is scant and superficial. As the new law takes effect, testing of the genetic tests also needs to be a priority.
My question: How will Big Brother safeguard the DNA tests?

After 10 years as a personal trainer I felt confident that I knew enough about how to get a person into the best shape of their life but not enough about the current state of fitness in America.
It certainly seems like we are in the middle of a near catastrophic decline in physical culture here. Despite radical advances in the technology of fitness we still only have about 14% of the population enrolled in a health club. But I wasn't satisfied with just some numbers, I needed to find out firsthand what was going on with fitness in the good ol' USA.
So I grabbed a camera and a mic and headed out to the annual Cub Industry East fitness trade show to talk with fitness entrepreneurs and other professionals to see...
What's going on in Fitness?
What I found was that fitness technology has improved by leaps and bounds and some people are creating incredible changes in how we approach fitness, interact with fitness equipment, and develop stronger bodies.
And yet we still seem to be a nation with a steadily growing waistline, so I checked out the new fitness gear and asked around this gathering to see what people were experiencing in American physical culture in 2008. After 10 years as a personal trainer I felt confident that I knew enough about how to... more

Nearly 20 Million Americans and 120 million people around the world now suffer from diabetes mellitus, some of them needlessly. This number is expected to double in the next 25 years.
“Dramatic new evidence signals the unfolding of a diabetes epidemic in the United States. With obesity on the rise, we can expect the sharp increase in diabetes rates to continue. Unless these dangerous trends are halted, the impact on our nation's health and medical care costs will be overwhelming.”
Jeffrey P. Koplan, MD, MPH
Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
1998-2002
The chart below shows diagnosed diabetes statistics as of 1997. As you can see, there were already over 10 million cases of diagnosed diabetes. This number has risen significantly since, to over 11 million diagnosed cases, and an estimated 6 million more undiagnosed in 2000. This number has continued to rise at an alarming rate....."
