A Pakistani man's solution to the age-old dilemma of whether to embark on an arranged or a love marriage has captivated the country's media.
Television channels have provided live coverage of Azhar Haidri's decision to marry both women over a 24-hour period.
At first he refused to marry the woman selected by his family since childhood because he loved someone else.
Pakistani law allows polygamy because it interprets Islam to allow a man to have up to four wives.
Islam is the main religion in the country.
Men who take multiple wives usually do so after a period of several years - and must get approval from their first wife prior to a second marriage.
Correspondents say that while it is not unusual for men in Pakistan to have several wives, it is rare for two weddings to take place almost simultaneously under the full glare of the media.
Ofcourse if a woman was to marry two men, i'm sure the media attention would be extremely negative and derogatory, not that a woman ever would be afforded the same entitlements bestowed on men in these countries.

Correspondents say Mr Zuma's belief in the traditional practice of polygamy has divided South Africans.

An Indian man married 14 women within just two years and spent, at most, three days a time with each per month.
None of the women, nor their families, questioned the man's behaviour and he was only caught because his salary couldn't provide for him and all 14 of his wives.
Interestingly, these were all highly educated women he tricked.

From the Times:
"A former glamour model who has admitted that she married her fifth husband without divorcing her previous four faces a possible prison sentence.
Emily Horne, 31, has already served six months in jail for serial bigamy. Horne, of Kingswinford, West Midlands, confessed her latest bigamous union to her most recent husband as they travelled to Scotland for their honeymoon.
Once described by a judge as a “very predatory female”, Horne appeared before Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, where she admitted marrying Ashley Baker, in Oldham, Greater Manchester, in September 2007. Horne had changed her name on marriage certificates frequently to avoid detection. "
Horne, 30, who studied physics but made her living, allegedly, as a "glamour model' and escort, is the villainess of the day across the pond. Because Horne has married five times - without first obtaining divorces. She married her high school boyfriend - legally - at 18, but although the two soon drifted apart, the marriage was never legally dissolved, and so her next marriage, three years later, wasn't legal. When she married a third time in 2000, the authorities took note and issued a caution, but this didn't stop her from a third illegal marriage, under a different name, two years later. When she allegedly attempted to leave her fourth husband for a friend of his, he turned on her and ratted her out to the cops. Horne served six months. The judge at the time said, "You are an attractive young woman and you might be described as a very predatory female."
So what, then, would prompt her to marry a fifth man in 2007? And to then confess the reality of her situation mere hour after the wedding, with press clippings to prove it? A "predatory female?" Try, "deeply disturbed." She lied and manipulated and obviously hurt people deeply - apparently she claimed she'd lost a sister and given up a baby, and told husband #5 that she had "womb cancer" - but what was the pathology at work that led this woman to risk certain capture in order to "marry" yet again? She doesn't seem to have used the relationships for material grifting gain - so to dismiss her as some kind of black widow seems an oversimplification, and far less troubling than the reality. From the Times:

Linda Gould, 37, married Robert Gould in November 1994, five months before divorcing her first husband Mark Cooper. The Scottish mother-of-two admitted bigamy after her husband, who was divorcing her, discovered she was already married when they wed.
Even though Linda Gould admitted her crime, she insisted that Mr Gould knew the facts and that the overlap was an "innocent mistake". Mr Gould, 36, on the other hand, claimed that he felt "so betrayed" as he had only discovered the error last month when he began proceedings for divorce after 14 years of marriage.
Ms Gould said: "The police were very understanding. What happened was that we planned to marry and were expecting the divorce papers to come through."
A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Police said a prosecution was not in the public interest.

Polygamous sects that have spread throughout the United States and beyond are "a form of organized crime," largely unchecked by law enforcement, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday.
He is proposing a federal-state partnership aimed at policing such communities.
"The lawless conduct of polygamous communities in the United States deserves national attention and federal action," Reid said before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Sects such as the Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have "wrongfully cloaked themselves in the trappings of religion" to conceal crimes such as bigamy, child abuse and statutory rape, the Nevada Democrat said. In such communities, teenage or preteen girls are forced to marry older men and bear their children, he said.
While those offenses are the most obvious, Reid said, other criminal conduct occurs -- "welfare fraud, tax evasion, massive corruption and strong-arm tactics to maintain what they think is the status quo."Polygamous sects that have spread throughout the United States and beyond are "a... more

McCain, who is about to become the GOP nominee, has made several statements about how he divorced Carol and married Hensley that conflict with the public record.
In his 2002 memoir, "Worth the Fighting For," McCain wrote that he had separated from Carol before he began dating Hensley.
"I spent as much time with Cindy in Washington and Arizona as our jobs would allow," McCain wrote. "I was separated from Carol, but our divorce would not become final until February of 1980."
An examination of court documents tells a different story. McCain did not sue his wife for divorce until Feb. 19, 1980, and he wrote in his court petition that he and his wife had "cohabited" until Jan. 7 of that year -- or for the first nine months of his relationship with Hensley.
Although McCain suggested in his autobiography that months passed between his divorce and remarriage, the divorce was granted April 2, 1980, and he wed Hensley in a private ceremony five weeks later. McCain obtained an Arizona marriage license on March 6, 1980, while still legally married to his first wife.
Bigamy is the act or condition of a person marrying another person while still being lawfully married to a second person. Bigamy is a crime in most western countries. For example, in the United States, because of the contract a married person makes upon becoming married, that person is obliged not to marry again as long as the first marriage continues; stipulations of the marriage license applying.
I'd say that was kind of a serious issue that should be addressedMcCain, who is about to become the GOP nominee, has made several statements about how... more

I could not stop laughing when I read this article. I found it to be so funny because the man was “worried” that his two wives might not like each other. I guess he did not need to worry about that since they both paired up and left him!
Talk about woman power!
"According to Islamic law, a woman can submit a request to leave her husband, but the pronouncement of divorce must come from the man or a court. Islam allows a man to have four wives." This quote here really outraged me because it shows how women in these areas are really oppressed.
I am happy to see that some women are taking a stand and are not afraid to go forth with something they want. In this case a divorce, which according to Islam law, requires more than a woman wanting a divorce. It requires a man willing to give her one or a court (which is mainly men).

The honeymoons are over for a 26-year-old woman who authorities say has at least 10 husbands. Eunice Lopez has been charged with bigamy, accused of marrying 10 men between 2002 and 2006 without divorcing any of them, federal immigration authorities say. The Miami Herald reported Saturday that a records search by the newspaper found seven additional marriages under the bride's name and birth date.
