By Eli Nawas, Southern Methodist University Graduate Student, Dallas TX – Sat July 11, 10:47am CT
The most fundamental and basic goal of any company is to achieve success. Success is attained by a company by differentiating itself from every other one. It may be the ‘operational efficiency’ a firm provides (as that of Dell’s laptop-customization and delivery model), the ‘hip-image’ factor a certain product delivers (such as the new-age iPhone) or the ‘customer-focused environment’ engrafted in a company’s culture (like the Southwest Airlines’ mode of service).
Operational efficiency and excellence may appear easy to imitate, but studying the market reveals that some powerful companies simply don’t take advantage of efficient-frameworks set by their competitors. General Motors, for example, failed to learn and embed lean manufacturing methodologies after its famous joint-venture with Toyota (known as ‘NUMMI’). Other examples include Google and Microsoft, Wal-Mart and Target...etc.
Observing how operational efficiency can be a fundamental factor in attaining success, one cannot but notice that many ICT organizations lack efficient decisive capabilities to employ ICT to envision and deliver powerful different services, which radically affect and influence operational excellence. Also, overcoming organizational inertia is rather complex and cannot be rapidly transformed.
ICT is almost never the main cause or reason of value deterioration. Nevertheless, if ICT was to contribute drastically in organizational strategic and operational success, it ought to discard routine everyday-operations and focus on high-value functions/activities.
ICT survived a number of transformational attempts to redesign how business models and rules are viewed and utilized in an effort to integrate and consolidate ICT and Software Engineering concepts. However, the Software Engineering Institute created the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) and defined a new context far beyond code-development and automation. Although many western ICT firms were skeptical about CMMI and rejected it as a reference for process improvement, others embraced it. However, applying industrial process techniques together with the emerging CMMI concepts, led to software estimate-improvements, timely-deliveries and enhanced code quality, which drastically changed how CMMI was previously perceived. Today, CMMI Level 5 is regarded as a standard in corporate systems (especially put in use in request for proposals), and as a result of CMMI’s adoption many ICT jobs came to transpire.
Recently, it was noted that a reasonable eagerness and interest for Web Services, especially Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) emerged. SOA’s basic and primary objective is creating sub-process component services that can be congregated and built in different ways to facilitate and enable innovative new business processes. These business processes can be extended, altered and customized by reusing SOA services, which is greatly attributed to the continuously expanding Service-Oriented Architecture libraries.
Applying the SOA framework[1] produces many business gains, some of which include the reduction of costs, due to services’ reuse, highly responsive ICT capabilities, and the improvement in quality, due to reduced code errors because of the services’ code-reuse option resulting in the elimination of any overlapping coding efforts.
To shed more light on these significant dimensions, service providers (such as IBM) are currently rendering and supplying rich catalogs of SOA components to numerous business industries, (specifically those involved in business-process implementation), to help businesses grow and gain a competitive edge. Key functions like manufacturing order, vendor setup and order tracking…etc, will be available for purchase by many diversified companies; which basically leads us down to the very concept of ICT commodification.
