In Defense of Smart Meters attempts to debunk the myths and fright talk circulating about the smart grid installations around the country. These meters are the latest tool needed to control our energy waste but, as usual, rumors abound about their safety and reliability. Regarding risk, it might be smarter to worry about the radiation from an electric can opener, microwave oven or blow dryer.:) http://greenlandlady.com/site/energy/in-defense-of-smart-meters/In Defense of Smart Meters attempts to debunk the myths and fright talk circulating... more

The new war between Google and Facebook is heating up: Google Inc. will no longer let other services, especially Facebook Inc., automatically import its users’ email contact data for their own purposes, unless the information flows both ways, according to the Reuters’ report.
It accused Facebook, the world’s biggest social network, in particular of siphoning up Google’s contact data, without allowing for the automatic import and export of Facebook users’ information.
When you initially sign up for Facebook, you’re run through a series of prompts asking you to enter your Google account information so that Facebook can import the email addresses of your contacts.
This is a very powerful feature because it helps new users instantly connect with dozens of their friends. And Google is turning it off, because it thinks Facebook isn’t playing fair.

AND now for something completely stupid.
Humanity is set to once again test the boundary between science fiction and fact by trying to build a classic imaginary weapon — the "stupid ray".
Different arms of the US military have recently been looking for ways to boost the mental abilities of troops.
Both DARPA and the Air Force Research Lab have projects underway aimed at finding external stimulants to temporarily enhance awareness and reduce stress.
But the boffins at the Air Force appear to have had a brainwave. If someone can do what they're asking, perhaps they could do the opposite too.
Wired reported this week that in an update to its call for research proposals, the Air Force has included a new topic for consideration.
First, it describes a few potential mind-enhancing technologies that could be used in the field.
Then, it says: "Conversely, the chemical pathway area could include methods to degrade enemy performance and artificially overwhelm enemy cognitive capabilities."
In other words, how about an invention that will make the other side dumber?
And if you think they’re not serious, there’s a chunk of $US49 million up for grabs for anyone who reckons they can do it.
Reports that sales of tinfoil hats tripled following the announcement are yet to be confirmed.AND now for something completely stupid.

It’s expected that Apple’s next iPhone could feature built-in Near Field Communication technology that will turn the iPhone into an electronic wallet or security passkey, and allow Mac users to have exactly the same computing experience on any machine, according to the latest rumours.
That’s what a source tells Apple blog Cult of Mac. The unnamed source asserts that Apple is researching ways to use near-field communication (NFC) for enabling remote computing.
The technology blog reports that the chip will turn the iPhone in to an ‘e-wallet,’ allowing owners to wave their iPhone over a contact pad in order to pay for items such as coffee, books or CDs in participating retailers.
NFC technology is already in use in Asia and it’s expected to explode in the U.S. in the next three to five years, especially if Apple adopts the technology.
The Cult of Mac’s source also claims that Apple has other plans for the NFC chip, and is exploring ways of using the technology to enable users to store their personal Mac computer settings on their iPhone, and then transfer those settings to another Mac with a flick of the wrist.

Hewlett-Packard released on Friday after all its touchscreen tablet computer that runs Windows OS, becoming the latest computer maker to jump into the fray following Apple ‘s debut of the iPad earlier this year, reports Wall Street Journal.
HP’s Slate 500 tablet can be bought on the company’s website for $799—above the price of most iPads, which range in price from $499 to $829, depending on storage space and wireless connectivity.
The HP Slate 500 is a Windows 7-based tablet PC with a 8.9-inch, 1024×600 resolution screen, a 1.86GHz Intel Atom Z540 processor, a Crystal HD accelerator that should ensure smooth playback for HD (1080p) videos.
The tablet PC also features two gigabytes of RAM (recent rumors predicted 1 GB), and a 64GB SSD. note: Apple’s iPads have a 9.7-inch screen.
It also has a USB port and two cameras: a 3-megapixel one on the back, and a VGA camera on the front for making video calls. It also has Wi-Fi but, quite disappointingly, no 3G connectivity.
These specifications make the Slate one of the most powerful tablets on the market, but its $799 price tag also makes it more expensive than its chief rivals. However, HP has envisioned the Slate as a device aimed at business customers.

Randall Munroe from XKCD.com, who created a very popular, just-for-fun, pseudo-scientific ‘Map of Online Communities’ in 2007, has revamped his previous infographic. The new 2010 edition, called the ‘Updated Map of Online Communities,’ reflects (among other information) data from spring and summer 2010.
“Communities rise and fall,” writes Munroe, “and total membership numbers are no longer a good measure of a community’s current size and health. This updated map uses size to represent total social activity in a community – that is, how much talking, playing, sharing, or other socializing happens there.”
The 2010 estimates “are based on the bet numbers I could find, but involved a great deal of guesswork, statistical inference, random sampling, nonrandom sample, a 20,000 cell spreadsheet, emailing, cajoling, tea-leaf reading, goat sacrifices, and gut instinct (i.e. making things up),” Munroe explains.
Indeed, seismic shifts have occurred among social networks since 2007. Facebook’s presence has grown to become the dominant feature on the updated social map. MySpace, on the other hand, is quite tiny and difficult to locate

The idea for using rail guns to launch objects to space has been around for years – even Isaac Newton considered the concept. But now a group of NASA engineers is seriously studying the possibility of using a rail gun as a potential launch system to the stars, and they are looking for a system that turns a host of existing cutting-edge technologies into the next giant leap spaceward. Stan Starr, branch chief of the Applied Physics Laboratory at Kennedy Space Center said that nothing in the design calls for brand-new technology to be developed, but counts on a number of existing technologies to be pushed forward. He said developing such a system would be a “major technology revolution.”
“All of these are technology components that have already been developed or studied,” he said. “We’re just proposing to mature these technologies to a useful level, well past the level they’ve already been taken.”
A rail gun utilizes a magnetic field powered by electricity to accelerate a projectile along a set of rails, similar to train rails. One early proposal from the NASA group calls for a wedge-shaped aircraft with scramjets to be launched horizontally on an electrified track or gas-powered sled. The aircraft would fly up to Mach 10, using the scramjets and wings to lift it to the upper reaches of the atmosphere where a small payload canister or capsule similar to a rocket’s second stage would fire off the back of the aircraft and into orbit. The aircraft would come back and land on a runway by the launch site.
The engineers, from KSC and other NASA centers, contend the system, with its advanced technologies, will benefit the nation’s high-tech industry by perfecting technologies that would make more efficient commuter rail systems, better batteries for cars and trucks, and numerous other spinoffs.
