The Hobbit prequels have been talked about for quite some time, but with MGM on the verge of bankruptcy and the constant delays, we've already lost Guillermo del Toro as director. Even though the film has financial backing at this point, we may lose Ian McKellan as Gandalf if the films continue to be delayed. Could Peter Jackson be on his way out, as well? Will the films ever actually go into production? The Hobbit prequels have been talked about for quite some time, but with MGM on the... more

If you missed it, yesterday’s shattering news in the movie industry is that Guillermo del Toro has left as director of The Hobbit. Oh boy. I was happy beyond measure when del Toro was named the director of the film. I felt like he was the right choice. However, studio blunderings and corporate red tape has frustrated the director and he’s out.
The question now is: Who’s in?
I’m going to make my list more brief and only include names of directors I would really like to see take the project, or at least that I think would bring an interesting dynamic.
* Jean-Pierre Jeunet – (Ameile, The City of Lost Children) JPJ is one of the most visually interesting directors alive. He handles themes both subtle and story-centric with a deft hand and will always provide a unique vision.
* Julie Taymor – (Across the Universe, Titus) Surprised? Taymor has a brilliant sense of drama and style. Although her resume is limited, I have the believe the amazing vision on display in Titus should put the director on the map for The Hobbit. It’s a completely different style of music than what she is known for, but then again have you seen Meet the Feebles?
* Danny Boyle – (Sunshine, 28 Days Later) – A true cross-genre auteur, Boyle could easily accomplish episodic drama, humor, and complex themes. Sunshine is his one movie that points to a sense of visual style that could compliment The Hobbit.

In the brand new SHREK FOREVER AFTER, an ill-advised pact with a conniving Rumpelstiltskin (Walt Dohrn) turns reality upside-down for everyone's favorite Scottish-accented ogre (Mike Myers). Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) no longer loves him, Donkey (Eddie Murphy) is downright terrified of him (and still annoying), and everyone in the kingdom of Far Far Away wants his head on a pike.
But, by far, the most upsetting inversion is that of the formerly dashing lothario, Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) -- now a morbidly obese, singularly unmotivated housecat. When fantasy's ultimate swashbuckler can no longer buckle his swash, you know things are bad. (We can think of two reasons for so bloated a feline; for the sake of propriety, we'll go with an overindulgence in Tender Vittles.)
Puss isn't the first to have his downhill slide observed by the merciless eye of the camera. In fact, the list of characters who've undergone unfortunate cinematic transformations is considerable. Take a look at these 10 particularly distressing cases, and see if it doesn't inspire you to reactivate your New Year's resolutions:

I don't quite know what to say.
I have been seeing this Tweet bounce around Twitter for a week or so and I went to have a look.
It seems that some Fanboys have been inspired to produce their own movie inspired by "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Now, don't laugh... Fanboys, whether Trekkies, Star Wars or Harry Potter or some other variety take their subjects very seriously and over the years Fanboy productions, because of their quality and watchability, have become legend.
Fanboy production (IMO) is an unsung hero of Indie Film, a genre underappreciated and often marginalized and ignored.
I think this 40 minute movie "The Hunt For Gollum," which will be released FREE on the Internet May 3rd will continue in this great tradition. I am blown away with what these guys are pulling of. They have my respect.
Check out the trailer and take a look at the incredible website they have put up. Below is pasted only a fraction of the information.

During 2008 a solar fountain will flow - and wild flowers will bloom - in a native plants garden that has replaced the lawn at the Lutheran Campus Ministry "Lothlorien" house for students at Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
An interfaith "Blessing of the Garden" ceremony included chanting, incense and other religious traditions from several faith communities.
Earth Keeper Initiative volunteer media advisor Greg Peterson has the story.
The producers thank Lutheran Campus Ministry student leader Sarah Swanson, NMU sophomore from Rapid River, MI for her videography and photography talents that helped make this video possible
(Marquette, Michigan) - In the spring of 2008 a solar fountain will flow and flowers will bloom in a northern Michigan native plants garden nurtured by university students that was blessed by a Buddhist head priest and a Lutheran pastor
A "Blessing of the Garden" ceremony was held in October 2007 at Lothlorien - the Northern Michigan University Lutheran Campus Ministry house near Lake Superior.
A heavy rain poured the entire day almost causing the ceremony to be moved inside, but the sun came out for 20 minutes and the rain resumed just as the blessing and a tour were completed.
Performing the blessing was Rev. Jon Magnuson, director of Lutheran Campus Ministry (LCM) at Northern Michigan University (NMU) in Marquette, MI; and Rev. Tesshin Paul Lehmberg, head priest of Lake Superior Zendo, a Zen Buddhist temple.
The Lothlorien lawn has been turned into a native plants garden that includes rocks from three of the Great Lakes.
The LCM house name, Lothlorien, comes from the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The garden includes Michigan plants and others from the Boreal border regions of the northern United States including Black Eye Susan, aster, dogbane, bluestem, and Sensitive fern.
Prayers, incense, bells, and chants were part of the ceremony that included a tour of the garden by NMU Student Michael Joko Rotter, a member of Lake Superior Zendo.
"Lothlorien is a magical kingdom part of what Tolkien called Middle-earth - where time passes differently," said Rev. Jon Magnuson, a Lutheran pastor, who founded the NMU EarthKeeper Student Team. Many of the campus ministry students belong to the interfaith NMU EK Student Team.
"Our natural native plants landscaping - our Lothlorien garden - is a sign of a new way of living with the world," Magnuson said. "It honors the indigenous and native plants of our region."
"Lothlorien came into being first as a song," Rev. Magnuson said. "The garden will be a haven for birds and other small creatures."
"The fountain represents the water of Lake Superior and the waters of our baptism," Magnuson said.
The Central Upper Peninsula Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans donated $1,600.
"Students are involved - and we like to support things that young people are going to be enthusiastically involved in like this native plants garden," said Judy Quirk, president of the Thrivent central U.P. chapter.
A fountain in the garden is going to be converted to solar power in the spring of 2008 and the sun will charge a battery allowing the water to flow in cloudy weather.
"We hope this will inspire people to learn the benefits that native plants have, such as requiring a third less water, and no pesticides or fertilizers," said Rotter.
Rotter said the "garden represents the hope of the future."

1937: Before there is the Lord of the Rings trilogy, there is The Hobbit. J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novel is first published on this date.
Often thought of as the precursor to the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit was Tolkien's first book. It tells the tale of a simple hobbit cajoled by a wizard into joining the quest to recover stolen treasure.
