Can documentaries about people living in poverty in the UK inform debate without resorting to voyeurism?
This relevant topic will be hotly debated on Friday at Sheffield’s documentary festival.
http://www.spectacle.co.uk/spectacleblog/poverty-and-the-media/sheffield-docufest-debates-the-ethics-of-poverty-on-tv/
Among those taking part is Mark Saunders, independent documentary filmmaker and founder of Spectacle, a campaigning media production company and ever expanding web presence. Spectacle produced the Poverty and Participation in the Media Project. Mark will be showing clips discussing the BBC’s documentary The Tower and Channel 4’s Rich Kid, Poor Kid.
He will be joined on the platform by leading UK programme makers Andy Glynne, Nick Fraser, Jim Boyle, Alexander Goodman and Robert Pendlebury. Brian Woods of True Vision and Julia Lewis from the Rowntree Foundation are moderating.
Although reality shows have attempted to provide more insight into the realities of life in poverty, they beg the question as to whether contrasting wealth and poverty is a sound approach. There may be better ways to create memorable, sensitive and engaging films.
After the debate, there will a series of shortlisted pitches.
The event is being hosted by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, which has partnered with Mosaic Films and BBC Storyville to find documentary makers who can produce compelling stories which engage audiences and encourage debate on poverty in the UK.

There's a buzz of news about complaints that voting booths left many unable to vote, leaving large unhappy queues of potential voters. One question today is, will legal action take place to contest some results?
Polling stations will face criticism, since some are saying with large registration and polling card numbers, the staff should have prepared for a big turn out.
In Sheffield, students are angry and say there was 'discrimination', where it's said students were split into another line away from a 'resident fast track queue'. Students not bringing polling cards were blamed, however the post points out students argued you don't need the card and that a good number of students did take their polling card.
"Later he appeared to change his argument claiming that "students don’t bring their polling cards" - although the students told Channel 4 News that a vast majority did have their documents. It was also discriminative, the student said, since there is no legal requirement to bring the polling card in order to vote."-Channel 4 news.
In other areas like Hackney there were sit ins, reports some voting booths stayed opened after 10pm and one station apparently ran out of ballot papers. It was already stated last night the Electoral Commission will investigate the complaints made. There's a buzz of news about complaints that voting booths left many unable to... more

A Sheffield Hallam University student who got blind drunk and took a leak on a war memorial has been spared a prison sentence by a judge who said he had never seen anyone before him who was more contrite.
19-year-old Philip Laing had drunk a bottle of whiskey with a friend before knocking back so many drinks on a student night out that he couldn't remember a thing about the night.
As well as an epic hangover, Laing's been punished with 250 hours of community service.

A recent booksigning event held to promote his new autobiography, 'Prezza: My Story: Pulling No Punches,' might be a good indication that a change of title is needed. Something along the lines of 'Prescott - pulling no punches or punters for that matter.'
According to Holy Moly, the self-proclaimed bulimic had an entourage of 9 people to deal with the expected crowds, but his security maintained his 'star status' by never being outnumbered by the crowds. I say crowds, I actually mean staff, as when only 7 people turned up, he had a wander around the store, 'befriended staff' and then bought a book.
I'd have loved to have approached him and then made a beeline for the Mills & Boon, sorry Prezza, soppy romantic tripe is much more appealing. A recent booksigning event held to promote his new autobiography, 'Prezza: My... more

I don't know much about the artist except that T2 is a producer from Leeds. England's Timbaland?
This song, "Heartbroken" was released sometime in November of 2007 but as usual America is slow on catching up with our friends across the pond. I thought I'd help by introducing this hot dance song.
Even Rye Rye recommends it!
