Celtic Christianity Today Homily “The Goodness of Creation” by Rev. Dr. George Cairns
Celtic Christianity Today Homily “The Goodness of Creation” on April 26, 2009 at Union Community Church, Valparaiso, IN by Rev. Dr. George Cairns of Chesterton, IN.
Rev. Dr. George Cairns delivers Celtic Christianity Today homilies:
The homilies on Celtic Christianity take a look at several topics including the European roots of the Celts (primarily Scotland and Ireland) and how Earth-based cultures can impact the future of civilization including actively protecting the environment, respecting fellow humans, different cultures and nature.
Cairns is working closely with Rev. Gregory Jones on several social fronts.
Rev. Jones is the pastor of the Union Community Church and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Theology at Valparaiso University.
Founded in 2007, The non-profit Turtle Island Project is known for its ongoing work with Native American issues - and the other wing involves other Earth-based religions like the Celts. Dr. Cairns is the co-founder of the nonprofit Turtle Island Project.
Rev. Cairns continues to work closely with the foremost Celtic group in the world, the Iona Community in Scotland that is a dispersed Christian ecumenical community working for peace and social justice, rebuilding of community and the renewal of worship.
Cairns is a research professor of Practical Theology and Spirituality at Chicago Theological Seminary, an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and lives in Chesterton, Indiana.
Cairns recently completed a six-part "contemplative reading and discussion" of Philip Newell's book "Christ of the Celts" at the Union Community Church. Cairns and his wife, Nancy, recently hosted a conference on Celtic Spirituality, Ecology, and Participative Consciousness.
Dr. Cairns says:
Celtic Christianity is a strand of the Christian tradition which developed during the
middle of the first millennium. Its full flowering in Ireland and Scotland continued for several hundred years before it was incorporated into the dominant church as many of its traditions were lost or suppressed.
There are two major reasons for this recovery and reconstruction of Celtic Christian practical theology for the church today: Church Renewal & Engaging and transforming the genocide and ecocide taking place today.
We are concerned that our current individual and systemic western consciousness is disembodied and ill. We believe that this process started several thousand years ago in the late Paleolithic. We are not trying to turn back the clock to the Stone Age. But we do know that a change in consciousness must begin if our planet and we are to survive.
What we have lost is participative consciousness, which understands that our lives are profoundly related to the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of all of creation. Another way of putting this is that we are completely relational beings. Reconnection with all of creation as sacred and responsive
and alive is our great task in the early 21st century.
We have living guides to help us such as Celtic Spirituality, Native American Spirituality and post-modern science. I believe we need to integrate the profound gifts of these resources and open ourselves to deepen our relationships with all of creation.”

“Arm yourself….with knowledge!”
Captain’s Comments
Internet Safety
A lot has been said about who you may meet or chat with online. Whole curriculums have been developed to keep kids safe from on-line predators, and that is a good thing. Kids are much more aware now that the person, who may claim to be a peer, could be something altogether different, like a convicted sex offender. Today, the Net is used for thousands if not millions of transactions. Most are legitimate, others, not so legitimate and not so safe. Recently, some large internet classifieds sites have made concessions to keep transactions safe. It is still up to the purchaser to keep in mind the adage, “Let the Buyer Beware,” in more ways than one. There are a lot of scams out there on the Net and in print classifieds as well as people hawking products right on the street. Attached is an Alert from Hayward PD regarding an on-line car sale that turned into a car jacking:
“On 05-11-2009 the victim, received a call from one of the suspects from cellular
telephone number 510-xxx-xxxx in response to an ad the victim posted on Craigslist to
sell a car. The victim later met with (S1) and (S2) at Southland Mall in Hayward. (S1) and (S2) are believed to have been dropped off at the mall by (S3), who was driving the
Suspect Vehicle described above. (S1) and (S2) test drove a car along with the victim. At
one point during the test drive (S1) stopped the car, (S2) got out of the car, opened a
passenger door and pointed a two handled unknown type firearm at the victim. (S2)
stated, "If you say anything, I will shoot you". (S1) and (S2) then stole the victim's car.
The victim car was recovered a few hours later by the Union City Police Department,
stripped of it's tires and rims.”
Similar sales have led to robberies of individuals showing up to a meeting spot with lot’s of cash to buy or valuable products to sell. Be prudent and thoughtful in making transactions. Consider if the deal is too good to be true. It may be a ruse, a hoax, stolen property or a set up. If everything seems ok, take a friend with you or meet at a public place. You may ask for identification or proof of purchase. Save all receipts and on-line transaction correspondence print-outs and keep them after the sale.
Police Community Meeting
Join us for the Central Station Police Community Forum this Thursday 5/21/09 at 6 PM. Lieutenant Richard Pate will speak about current events and crime trends. The location is the Tel-Hi Community Center at 660 Lombard Street.
Telephone Extortion Scam
To date, we have received reports of dozen’s of phone call extortion attempts in the district over the past weeks. In each incident, between 10 AM and Noon, a male caller described as sounding ‘Asian with a raspy voice’ who makes a random call to the victim, saying that they will kidnap a family member unless the victim sends an amount of cash to a specified overseas location. We encourage reporting and specific details of similar calls in our efforts to investigate and put an end to the calls. Try caller id or immediately call your phone provider immediately after such a call and explain the need to obtain the number that just dialed your phone. There has been no merit to any validity in any of the threats made.
“Collect Your Prize!” Scam
Over the past week, we have heard from several individuals who say they have been contacted to put money up front to collect a prize at a public place later on in the week. Several people were conned into doing just that. Remember to be wary of the something for nothing schemes and even the something for something schemes. All of the fraudulent trick and device ‘cons’ have something in common: they look to exploit individuals hopeful to win or otherwise get something free or for little return. Hang up on telemarketers and shred and toss unsolicited similar mail as well.Central District Newsletter Captain James I. Dudley May 19, 2009 “Arm... more-

Captain’s Comments
Violent crime is serious. It is our number one priority in response and prevention. Reports are reviewed each day and each month a CompStat presentation is done to check for crime patterns and series. Crime Maps are generated to get a visual view of crime within the district. Recently after a few high profile robbery cases, the community and media have been calling to inquire about the “rash” or “spike” or “increase” in violent crime within the Central District. Union Square was of particular concern recently because of two high profile robbery cases. I was assured by our Robbery Detail that there were certainly no “take over style” robberies within the district or elsewhere in the City for that matter. I did my own Crime Map search and found that we have had 2 to 3 robberies each month in the Union Square area since January. Robbery is defined as the taking, by force or fear, the property of one by another. Sometimes it can be the often-thought of suspect on victim robbery. It can be with a weapon or simply by force or threat of force. It can be someone snatching a purse, shopping bag, cell phone or MP3 player. It can also be called a robbery when a shoplifter is confronted and uses force to escape.
My point is that there is no recent rash, spike or increase in robberies in the area. I am certainly not minimizing the seriousness or trauma experienced by a victim in the commission of this most personal crime. This newsletter is a crime prevention tool to keep you informed and to give more situational awareness in order for you to “arm yourself with knowledge.” It is not intended to frighten anyone or to sensationalize crime. If you learn anything at all about personal safety, what to look out for or how to report a crime, then we have done our job on the prevention side of crime. There are other resources and safety tips online at www.SFSAFE.org and you can see archived newsletters from each of the ten district stations and access Crime Maps at www.sfgov.org/police Remember to stay alert, be aware of your surroundings and call us when you suspect something requires attention.

“Arm yourself….with knowledge!”
Captain’s Comments
I learned a lot about epidemiology sine this whole flu issue came up. Public Health issues and how they assess and handle their response is a lot like police work. Prevention is the best strategy. After that, as incidents occur, we both look at the problem and go back to the root causes. After looking back, we come up with a strategy and look into the future. In both professions we use a variation of the SARA Model of Problem Solving:
SCAN-What is the overall problem? Can it be identified and narrowed?
ANALYZE- What are all the contributing factors? Are their commonalities to the problem? Here is where we look at everything; CrimeMaps, Police Reports, Evidence, Statements, Computer Generated Calls for Service, etc.
RESPOND-This is the fun part, the action plan. It is where we apply resources to the problem. As I always say, the Police are only one component to good problem solving. Community Policing is really Community Problem Solving, take that a step further and it is good Community and City Government Problem Solving. That is, involving all agencies that have a stake in the crime or problem or who can help solve it. That can mean going all the way to changing legislation, getting help from state and local licensing boards or commissions. To handle something only from the Law Enforcement aspect is only deferring the problem.
ASSESS- Take a look at a timeline to addressing problems. There should be a 30 day period to apply the enforcement or action plan and fine tune it after that. Expect a spike in activity or reported cases. Adjust the plan if something is obviously out of whack. Take a look at the plan in 30-60-90 day intervals. If there is no good outcome, go back to the Analysis stage and take another look at what may be missing.
Officers on the street level are encouraged to think along these lines and are tasked to fill out a Problem Solving Worksheet when confronted with a chronic problem. At the management level we apply the same strategy by looking long term with licenses and permits, especially as they deal with alcohol and over-intensification in certain areas. Some strategies give instant results and some may not see benefits for months or even years after the fact.
Help us help you by calling us or at least by calling 311 to document nuisance issues in your neighborhood.
That said, there is hardly any defense against irrational acts of senselessness. That was the case on May 1, 2009 at 9:45 PM. It was of course, “Mayday” filled with protests, marches and celebrations of several movements. None of them could be attributed to the band of usual suspects described as young men and women, 20-30 years old, wearing all black clothing, including “hoodies” and some with masks or scarves across their faces. Several individuals, 30-50 in number ran along Geary and Grant Avenue, smashing windows as they ran. Several windows were smashed on various stores in the immediate area. Nothing was stolen. The message, if there was one, was to create vandalism, simply because they could. A website page forwarded to me touted their “Smashing Success in SF.” Such acts are cowardess and indeed senseless. Tools, wrenches, crowbars and pipes used in the barrage were booked as evidence and a follow up is being handled by investigators reviewing video tapeCentral District Newsletter Captain James I. WKQS: Upper Peninsula EarthKeepers to plant 12,000 trees across northern Michigan for Earth Day 2009
Upper Peninsula EarthKeepers discussed the planting of 12,000 trees across northern Michigan for Earth Day 2009 during the live interview on WKQS Radio in Marquette, Michigan.
The interview was on WKQS in Marquette at 7:30 a.m. on Monday April 20, 2009
News Director and WKQS Sunny 102 morning drive co-host Walt Lindala interviewed Natasha Koss of the Superior Watershed Partnership & Catholic EarthKeeper Kyra Fillmore, EarthKeeper communications coordinator for faith communities, about the EarthKeeper Tree Project coming up in May to plant 12,000 trees around the U.P.
WKQS
http://broadcasteverywhere.com/marknwalt
The public and media are invited to an Earth Day 2009 Blessing of the Trees planting ceremony with representatives of ten faith traditions at 3:30 p.m. April 22 next to the Presque Isle pavilion in Marquette.
"The EarthKeeper project this year is one where people from across the U.P. will see tangible results of their earth stewardship," said Gail Griffith, EarthKeeper Implementation Team co-chair. "I hope that congregations involve their young people in their planning and planting."
The EarthKeeper team includes ten faith traditions with over 150 participating churches/temples, the nonprofit Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP), the nonprofit Cedar Tree Institute (CTI), and the Northern Michigan University EarthKeeper Student Team.
Founded in 2004, the EarthKeeper Covenant is signed by the bishops/leaders of ten faith communities: Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, United Methodist Church, Unitarian Universalist, Baha'i, Jewish, Zen Buddhist and the Quakers.
The trees "will be wrapped individually in a plastic bag with planting instructions,” said Carl Lindquist, SWP executive director. "It's fun and it helps further our long term protection and restoration goals for local watersheds and the Great Lakes."
On May 2, participating churches and temples will pick up their trees at local conservation district offices and have been asked to bless the seedlings before planting at numerous locations Sun., May 3 assisted by the NMU EarthKeeper Student Team and other volunteers.
To request trees call Kyra Fillmore at 906-228-2388
The trees were purchased/donated by the U.P. EarthKeeper team, SWP, Holli Forest Products, the Forestland Group, Plum Creek Timber Company and Meister's Greenhouses.
"Our interfaith tree planting effort is more than another conservation project," said Rev. Jon Magnuson, CTI executive director and EarthKeeper Initiative co-founder. "With prayers, hymns and the blessing of 12,000 seedlings, it's a gentle proclamation of a new consciousness and commitment among our faith communities to care for God's creation."
Those donating to the project include Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Western U.P. Chapter 30918 in Ironwood, MI
This is the fifth U.P. EarthKeepers environment project for Earth Day.
From 2005-2007, over 15,000 people turned in more than 360 tons of household hazardous waste at a dozen collection sites across the U.P. Most items were recycled and the remainder was properly disposed under federal guidelines including electronic waste like electronic waste like computers, monitors and printers plus cell phones, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, herbicides, oil-based paint and vehicle batteries.
Last year EarthKeepers provided a household energy conservation checklist that resulted in over 3 million pounds of carbon being reduced.
In past projects, EarthKeepers partnered with numerous groups including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Keweenaw Bay Indian community.

U.P. EarthKeepers to plant 12,000 trees for Earth Day 2009: Marquette Mining Journal news story
(Marquette, Michigan) - The Upper Peninsula interfaith EarthKeepers will create the equivalent of a forest across the Lake Superior basin for Earth Day 2009 as 12,000 trees are planted by about 100 churches and temples in northern Michigan.
"The EarthKeeper project this year is one where people from across the Upper Peninsula will see tangible results of their earth stewardship," said Gail Griffith, EarthKeeper Implementation Team co-chair. "I hope that congregations involve their young people in their planning and planting."
"Each year the staff at the Superior Watershed Partnership looks forward to helping the EarthKeepers coordinate an event," said Carl Lindquist, SWP executive director. "It's fun and it helps further our long term protection and restoration goals for local watersheds and the Great Lakes."
The EarthKeeper team includes ten faith traditions with over 150 participating churches/temples, the nonprofit Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP), the nonprofit Cedar Tree Institute (CTI), and the Northern Michigan University EarthKeeper Student Team.
Founded in 2004, the Earth Keeper Covenant has been signed by the bishops/leaders of ten faith communities: Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, United Methodist Church, Unitarian Universalist, Baha'i, Jewish, Zen Buddist and the Lake Superior Friends (Quakers).
United Methodist Church (UMC) Marquette District Superintendent Grant R. Lobb said one tree provides many positive benefits like "improving air quality, stabilizing the soil, providing shade, and giving beauty to our sight."
An annual Jewish holiday celebrates the blossoming of the almond trees in Israel at the start of spring, said Dr. Constance Arnold, president of the board for Temple Beth Sholom.
"Tu B'Shvat is a very ancient holiday we observe yearly," said Arnold. "This is a reminder of the importance of trees."
Roman Catholic Diocese of Marquette Bishop Alexander K. Sample said he encourages parishes "to participate fully in this EarthKeeper project."
Northern Great Lakes Synod Lutheran Bishop Thomas A. Skrenes said "trees matter" and encouraged Sunday school classes, confirmation classes, men and women groups and others to plant as many trees as possible.
The connection between trees and a healthy world has long been taught in the Bahá'í Faith, said Dr. Rodney H. Clarken, chair of the Local Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of Marquette.
Clarken cited the works of well-known Bahá`í conservationist Richard St. Barbe Baker of England who is nicknamed the "Man of the Trees."
The head priest for Lake Superior Zendo, a Marquette Zen Buddhist Temple, said "we absolutely must care for mother earth."
"Human life, literally and figuratively, is inseparable from mother earth," said Reverend Tesshin Paul Lehmberg, EarthKeeper Implementation Team co-chair. "We are inextricably threaded to her. In caring for her, we care for ourselves."
David McCowen, a member of Lake Superior Friends one of two Quaker groups in the U.P., said trees provide "wind breaks, wildlife habitat, fuel source, and a cellulose fiber source."
The EarthKeeper Tree Planting Project is "another opportunity to work cooperatively with God and nature to replenish the earth," said Pastor Dave Anderson of Grace Presbyterian Church in Sagola and chaplain for the Dickinson County Healthcare System.
Marquette Unitarian Universalist Congregation (MUUC) celebrant coordinator Nancy Irish said planting trees is a "simple and meaningful way to put our environmental concern into action" because they "serve as lungs, shelter, inspiration, comfort, and sustenance for other living creatures."
Episcopal EarthKeeper team member Nancy Auer of Houghton, MI said there are good reasons to plant trees "in a region of the country known for trees" including minimizing the effects of logging.
"Our interfaith tree planting effort is more than another conservation project," said Rev. Jon Magnuson, CTI executive director and EarthKeeper Initiative co-founder.(Marquette, Michigan) - The Upper Peninsula interfaith EarthKeepers will create the... more-

Captain’s Comments
We send our thoughts and sympathy to the lives affected by the fallen Oakland Police Department Officers. It serves as a reminder of how violent and life threatening our jobs can be.
Events:
St. Patrick’s Day festivities were well controlled with a few arrests made, mostly for public drunkenness. Many of the downtown locations started early and ended before midnight. By 2 AM the district was back to normal.
On March 25th plan to attend another Town Hall Meeting with Supervisor David Chiu and representatives from major City Departments such as Fire, Police, Health, DPT and Rec and Park. I will not be able to attend this month but come and meet one of our new Night Lieutenants Rich Pate of Victor Tsang. The meeting is 6PM-8PM at the Spring Valley Elementary School at 1451 Jackson Street between Hyde and Larkin.
On Saturday March 21st we facilitated the Anti-War Demonstration beginning at Justin Herman Plaza, along Market Street to Civic Center Plaza.
We’ve been given a ‘heads up’ regarding a “Flash Mob” gathering on March 25th “downtown” calling for “all Zombies!” That usually means that folks will text each other and show up wearing make up and torn clothes with fake blood and assorted limbs. If I knew exactly where and when they are to appear, I would tell you.

“Arm yourself….with knowledge!”
Captain’s Comments
I am fresh back from a short vacation in Boca Grande in Florida this past week and as I soaked in all the sunshine, baseball and beaches, I wondered how to tie it all into this week’s newsletter with a safety twist to it. It was easy, as I thought about all the e-mails I have been getting with links to Facebook, Plaxo and other websites dedicated to promoting yourself through the on-line pages. People put lots of interesting things about themselves, their work, their family, interests and many other things in their life. If you search for my profile on any of those sites you will find pretty slim pickings. Not even a photo. Of course there are other public sources where my picture and other details pop up. But the fact remains that I choose not to add too much information on the web. There are a lot of scams out in the world these days, from spam e-mails, to spam phone calls to identity theft. Back in the days of newspaper print, scam artists even went so low as to look up local obituaries to see when someone was home or if a reception would be held at their home so they could take advantage of the situation.
Putting out information on the web that you will be away on vacation is just like letting newspapers pile up on your doorstep. It is almost an invitation to opportunists that will let them know that no one is home and no one is looking after it. On most sites on the web it is accessible to the greater public. Be careful of what you post on it. Think about long term as well. Recently, friends of mine said that their company would be under the scrutiny of an activist group. It was the same global group that had been connected with domestic terrorism, vandalism, assaults and threats. I told them that the first thing they should do would be to go to their website and take off the bulk of their personal information. Some of us have pretty public lives and there is already a lot of information out there, why add to it? If you go away on vacation you may stop the mail and papers, put timers on lights and sprinklers and ask a friend or neighbor to keep an eye on things. The web has global access, why not take precautions there as well?
How was the vacation? Too short and not enough time for all the great things offered there like fishing, boating and golf. I did see an abundance of wildlife like turtles, armadillos, osprey and caught a Grapefruit League baseball game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates. I even had the opportunity to say hi to old time San Francisco Giants greats Chris Speier and Dusty Baker. When is my next vacation? I won’t say.

What Does the Quran Say About Women's Creation and Purpose (Women in Islam)
From a tiny drop that becomes an embryo, the girl-child is born to be an honored part of God's plan. God states in the Muslim holy book, the Qur'an:
"O humankind! Be conscious of your Lord Who created you from a single soul, and out of it created its mate, and out of the two spread countless men and women. Be conscious of your Lord through Whom you demand your mutual rights and honor the wombs; God always watches over you." (Qur'an 4:1)
According to the Qur'an, there was a Garden of Eden. There was a forbidden tree, but no apple, no snake, and certainly no fault on Eve alone. Both Adam and Eve sinned at the same time. They felt shame, repented, and were forgiven together. God provided them with guidance, showing them a way back to Him.
"Each soul earns on its own account: and no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another." (Qur'an 6:164)
"If any do deeds of righteousness, whether male or female, and have faith, they will enter Paradise and not the least injustice will be done to them." (Qur'an 4:124)
The sole purpose and existence of both men and women is to worship God through faith and good deeds, fulfilling their role as God's honorable trustees and witnesses on this earth.

What is Written in the Quran About Motherhood (Women in Islam)
"And We have enjoined upon man to be kind to his parents; in pain did his mother bear him, and in pain did she give him birth. The carrying of a child to his weaning is thirty months. At length, when he reaches the age of full strength and is forty years (old), he says, 'O my Lord! Grant me that I may be grateful for Your favors, that You bestowed me and upon both my parents; that I may do righteous deeds that are acceptable to You; and be gracious to me with regards to (my own) offspring. Surely, I turn to You repentant, and I wholly give myself (to You)." (Qur'an 46:15)
Mothers are accorded a special place of honor and respect in Islam.
A man once came to Prophet Muhammad and asked, "O Messenger of God! Who among the people is more worthy of my companionship?" The Prophet replied, "Your mother." Then man then asked who next, the Prophet replied "Your mother" again. The man repeated the question a third time and got the same answer. The man asked once again, "Who next?" Only then did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reply, "Your father."
These, and other references in the Qur'an and incidents from the life of the Prophet, clearly indicate the elevated status Islam has given to mothers. A Muslim sees a mother as an icon of strength and courage, tempered with compassion, kindness and love.

“Arm yourself….with knowledge!”
Captain’s Comments
Happy Presidents Day! With the short week, comes the short newsletter. The weather has certainly been a factor in crime and events being very low key. Protests in the district were very manageable. Officers at the Valentines Day Pillow Fight in Justin Herman Plaza on Saturday saw no problems. A protest at a religious organization on Columbus was equally non-eventful. Broadway was certainly dampened and subdued as the numbers reflect below. The hot spot of the weekend was indeed volatile, with a shooting occurring at a nightclub on the 600 block of Jackson Street, on 2/16/09 at 1:27 AM, leaving one 21 year old from Oakland with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. A 17 year old from San Francisco was arrested and a handgun was recovered near the shooting.
Join us for the Central Station Community Meeting on February 19, 2009 at 6 PM at the Tel-Hi Center at 660 Lombard. Call or write me if you’d like to add something to the agenda. I plan to speak on Crime Stats from 2008 and how they compare with 2007. I will also talk about staffing of personnel and plans for 2009. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Thousands attended and braved the cold at this year’s Chinese New Year’s Parade. The good news included no precipitation. Officers did have to quell hotspots along the parade route from over zealous crowds, the very few misbehaving individuals and later at bars along the 900 block of Grant Avenue. All in all, it was a well attended and managed event.

Nicaragua Coffee Fair Trade 3: Organic coffee farming, respect for women and the environment
Two Northern Michigan University students started the New Year learning about Fair Trade during the peak of the coffee growing season in Nicaragua.
Since their return on January 12, Lisa McCarthy and Sarah Swanson have begun a series of presentations at U.P. churches to encourage Americans to buy Fair Trade coffee that ensures poor Nicaraguan farmers don't lose money in the labor-intensive industry of coffee production.
The NMU students among 13 Americans on Lutheran World Relief Study Tour.
In the final part of a three-part video series, The students describe how the women of Nicaragua are treated with respect, the importance of families and the environmental protection efforts of one Nicaragua’s organic farmers.
The group visited the capitol of Managua, and the villages of Matagalpa, Jinotega and La Reyna.
Fair trade ensures fair wages, and protects women's rights and human rights plus fights poverty.

Gung Hay Fat Choy!
The Year of the Ox is here, and fell on January 26, 2009. The annual parade and festivities will take place on Saturday, February 7, 2009. Get your seat now for the parade that begins south of Market, winds up Geary, around Union Square, down Post and up Kearny to Portsmouth. It is always a bigger than life event and one to be witnessed.
Robbery Crime Sprees foiled by days and night watches!
On 1/23/09 at 10:40 AM a woman stopped her car to use the ATM on the 700 block of Beach Street when she was approached by two black males in their early 20’s. One of the men was armed with a handgun. He ordered the woman to hand over her wallet and car at gun point. The woman complied and quickly told her partner who was working nearby. The boyfriend told her to call 911 as he gave chase with his two dogs in pursuit of the suspect who now fled on foot. Several Day Watch Officers, including Fisherman’s Wharf Beat Officer Noel DeLeon, Wagon Officers Terry Laubach and Benny Chin and School Resource Officer Steve Matthias coordinated their response to capture both suspects. The gun was found to be a replica and was located abandoned on the seat of the victim’s vehicle. Evidence was still found in the pockets of one of the men and both were booked for Robbery.
On 1/24/09 from Midnight to 2 AM, several suspects from Antioch, Richmond and San Pablo went on a robbery spree around Russian Hill and Nob Hill, totaling at least five incidents. The suspects and vehicle was described to officers in the field. At least one handgun was described by victims. In at least one case, the victim was struck in the head with the gun. Alert Night Watch Officers Jeremy Cummings and Charles August responded to the Highway on ramp near 5th Street and waited to see if the getaway car would travel in the direction of the Bay Bridge. Their intuition paid off when they observed the vehicle approach just after 2 AM. Several Officers responded after the vehicle resisted initial efforts to stop them. The vehicle was stopped and 5 suspects were detained near Treasure Island on the Bay Bridge. A thorough investigation yielded property, evidence, cash, clothing, and a vehicle. Several victims from the five robberies responded and identified the suspects as the same ones who robbed them earlier.
On 1/26/09 at Jackson and Grant, several officers were on hand to monitor fireworks to celebrate the actual Chinese New Year’s Day. Officers responded to a call of a male brandishing a handgun in the crowd. Sgt. Joe Fischer and Night Watch OfficersCentral District Newsletter Captain James I. Dudley January 27, 2009 “Arm... more-

January is a busy month. We have had protest activities several times already this month and we are prepared to deal with all future demonstrations. In addition, our troops have been spread thin with labor issues near the Maritime Plaza, #1 Post Street and the Israeli Consulate on Montgomery. On the 24th of January we anticipate traffic delays along the waterfront during the “Walk for Life” march and counter demonstrations from Justin Herman Plaza to the Marina Greens.
Chinatown will be active with the Flower Parade and Market beginning on 1/24/09.

This is a city-wide campaign involving police officers of all Police Districts in San Francisco and volunteers from a number of public agencies and Community-Based Organizations, reminding the public to be aware of crime and to make prompt police reports about criminal and suspicious activities.
This will be the 12th annual Lunar New Year Public Safety Awareness campaign with joint collaboration by SAFE and the SFPD. Since the launching of the first campaign in 1998, we have achieved a significant drop in extortions targeting Asian merchants. Balancing passion with reason
Hey there,
No one would argue that global conflicts stir up diverse opinions and perspectives. Usually when this occurs, a correlated division of public opinion becomes evident -- each side passionate about their beliefs and opinion and willing to take up arms to defend it.
Current is a global community, with polarizing public opinion from across the globe. It's also a place where differences in beliefs and opinions are welcomed to be debated and discussed without fear of censorship and ridicule from others in the community. However, when passion runs high and arguments become heated it is often difficult to maintain composure, and recent activity on some Current.com threads have shown this to be true.
The Current community team makes no attempts to censor opinion. We're here to help foster these discussions while upholding a set of community standards that we've positioned as guidelines for participation on the site. It's not our job to censor opinion. All we ask is that you give respect to the rest of the community and adhere to the terms.
http://current.com/s/community_standards.htm
We will continue to flesh out these standards to help add some context, but the general rule of thumb is that freedom of expression is widely encouraged, as long as said expression does not trample on someone else's right to express a different perspective. It would be naïve to suggest that nefarious characters do not participate in Current (as with all communities). No matter how a system is constructed, provocation and inappropriate behavior will occur from time to time, and that is where the community team is required to moderate this behavior. There is usually no right or wrong in these situations, but things still can turn ugly.
However, we're not alone in this. Each and every member of our community has the option to use the flag feature on items, comments, and profiles that appear to violate our standards. As a member of this community, we feel that this is the socially responsible thing to do. If you think we have missed something, then let us know! Highlight any details you think we need to pay close attention to but remember, how you have read a comment is not necessarily how the majority read it. We are all unique, with our own cultural background and personal ideology and this all helps to define our understanding. If you are unsure how to use the flagging system then feel free to drop us a line. We are here to help.
Reasoned debate and passionate opinion are the essence of Current. Personal or racist comments regardless of provocation will not be tolerated.
Current.com is a place for all points of view to be expressed, debated, and discussed, but it is also important to engage one another with respect for varied opinions. Everyone on Current has the right to engage with other users without the fear of being insulted or abused for their opinion. If you feel what you are about to post could be considered offensive then simply do not post. We are all adults here and we all have the ability to express ourselves and debate the way news is being reported in a constructive and intelligent manner.
Best,
Mario

Part 2: Turtle Island Project Cowboys & Angels concert for White Buffalo Calf Woman Society
Munising, MI - Northern Michigan residents helped fight American Indian teen suicide and family violence during December 13 third annual free benefit concert in northern MI.
The non-profit Turtle Island Project (TIP) in Munising organized the third annual "Cowboys and Angels" concert that was held to benefit the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society (WBCWS) in Mission, South Dakota – the first Native American domestic violence shelter in the world.
The WBCWS battles domestic violence, sexual assault and an alarming increase in teen suicides on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation, the home of the Sicangu Lakota people.
Poverty, depression, a lack of jobs, drugs, alcohol and other social problems are among the reasons behind Rosebud suicides and family violence.
Rev. Dr. Lynn Hubbard performed original songs and seasonal music during the concert on Saturday, Dec. 13 from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Falling Rock Cafe and Bookstore at 104 East Munising Ave. in downtown Munising
The WBCWS was founded 30 years ago by a group of courageous Native American women including current executive director Tillie Black Bear.
"The White Buffalo Calf Woman's Society and its domestic violence shelter are vital to address social issues like teen suicide and domestic violence on the Rosebud reservation," said Dr. Hubbard, pastor of the Eden on the Bay Lutheran Church in Munising, MI. "Women and children are treated with dignity."
"The Rosebud Reservation has been described as a Third World Country in America's heartland," Hubbard said. "Social problems on the Rosebud can sometimes seem overwhelming but the answer starts with a person donating money or volunteering their time and praying for the people."
The TIP has organized numerous free benefit concerts in the U.P. and SD for the WBCWS including two by Iron County-based folk groups, White Water and Duo Borealis.
