VATICAN CITY – A woman jumped the barriers in St. Peter's Basilica and knocked down Pope Benedict XVI at the start of Christmas Eve Mass, but the 82-year-old pontiff got up unhurt and proceeded as planned with Thursday's service.
Witness video obtained by The Associated Press showed a woman dressed in a red hooded sweat shirt vaulting over the wooden barriers that cordoned off the basilica's main aisle and rushing toward the pope before being swarmed by bodyguards.
The video showed the woman grabbing the pope's vestments as she was taken down by guards, with Benedict then falling on top of her.
The commotion occurred as the pope's procession was making its way toward the main altar and shocked gasps rang out among the thousands who packed the basilica. The procession came to a halt, the music stopped and security rushed to the trouble spot.

A woman jumped the barriers and knocked down the pope as he walked down the main aisle to begin Christmas Eve Mass, a Vatican spokesman said.
The commotion in St. Peter's Basilica happened as Pope Benedict XVI arrived to celebrate the traditional Mass.
The Rev. Ciro Benedettini said the pope quickly got up and was unhurt. Benedict, 82, calmly resumed his walk to the basilica's main altar and began the Mass late Thursday.
Benedettini said the woman who pushed the pope appeared to be mentally unstable and was arrested by Vatican police. She also knocked down Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, who was taken to hospital for a checkup, Benedettini said.A woman jumped the barriers and knocked down the pope as he walked down the main aisle... more

We should all have John Leguizamo's kind of December -- he gets to open two films this year.
And while one, the ensemble comedy/drama Nothing Like The Holidays, has him as a featured player, the other, the independent social drama Where God Left His Shoes, is pretty much his show. In it, he plays a father who, with his step-son in tow, hits the New York streets one cold, Christmas eve in order to find the qualifying job that will get his homeless family into an apartment in time for the holidays.
I was able to talk to Leguizamo about the rigors of shooting on the cheap, and in the bargain got some unexpected insights into the casts of both films. We should all have John Leguizamo's kind of December -- he gets to open two films... more

His grace and goodness too,
May fill your heart and bless you now

as you rejoice with family and friends"

Mars is going to be unusually bright and the moon will be shining in full on Christmas Eve, making the night sky so bright that Santa likely won't need the guidance of his reindeer's shiny red nose.
And scientists have re-written the famous reindeer song for the momentous occasion!
"Mars is a red-tinged planet
With a very shiny glow
And if you look to see it
You will find the moon in tow.
All of the other Yuletides
Santa would have at his side
The shiny nose of Rudolph
Acting as his big sleigh's guide
But this very Christmas Eve
Santa came to say:
"Rudolph, now with Mars so bright,
You can stay at home tonight."
Then all the reindeer teased him.
And they shouted out with glee:
"Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
Outsourced to astronomy."
oh, scientists. hehehe.
