Stars of panned camp fave "Showgirls" have shared some fascinating behind-the-scenes tidbits with TabloidProdigy.com. Now celebrating its 15th anniversary, cast members reflect on their experience in "Showgirls" and its continuing cult afterlife.
Of note...
On screening the movie:
RENA RIFFEL: I was on the set of “Striptease” in Florida right when “Showgirls” came out. I saw it with the cast of “Striptease” and no one liked it. They were disgusted. Especially Demi Moore. Demi came over to me and said “you are the only good thing in the movie,” and said “we don’t want ‘Striptease’ to be any thing like that.”
On Elizabeth Berkley's performance:
ALAN RACHINS: Walking on the set, Elizabeth was very sweet and just a doll and I really appreciated that. She’s that odd combination of a nice Jewish girl from Michigan, and then there was this movie, and it just didn’t go together.
On Paul Verhoeven's direction:
JOSHUA GRANNELL: Patrick (actor Patrick Bristow who played “Goddess” choreographer Marty) told a great story on the time when he came in to shoot the big dance rehearsal number and yelled “Thrust it! Thrust it!” Paul said to him “cut” and yelled at him “you’re not a dance instructor!” And says cut again and screams at Patrick and says “give me passion!” Patrick said “I’m going to give him so much passion, he’s going to regret asking.” He then drops to his knees and screams and beats the floor. Paul said “perfect.” That’s when Patrick looked at other actors and they thought “oh my god, what am I doing here?” Paul directed every movie that way. It’s an over the top, relentless ride. There’s not much you can compare it to–every single moment was milked.
The script:
RENA RIFFEL: She (Gina Gershon) was shaking her head and said “Oh my god.” I heard rumors from others that she said “I don’t know what the hell I’m doing.” It was really hard delivering those lines, even though I think she did such an amazing acting job.
On that damn rape scene:
GREG TRAVIS: Paul likes the ultra violence and I think he went a little too ultra violent. It didn’t need as much screen time as it did to get the point across. It was the big twist at the end where she comes back to beat up the bad guy. It was a part of her character art. I’ve been a part of a lot of screening and that’s the part they squirm at.
More juicy dish here:

Germany, I am dissap--man, that wet and naked woman sure is crawling on the ground for a long time.
Where was I? Oh, right, so you'll find the trailer for Showgirls: The Return at the bottom of this entry. You may ask why I'm not even botheriing with an embed for this. And that's really simple: the trailer is NSFW so hard that you take your own work-safeness into your hands by watching it here [again, NSFW].
So what's it about? Well, according to Movieline, it's worth nine scenes of pure insanity. JoBlo has a translated plot description that involves the brother of another stripper/dancer (apparently, Hope from the original) who travels to Frankfurt after she overdoses on coke. Yeah. I don't know who Hope was either, and it doesn't seem like anyone remotely connected to the first film is coming back.
Basically, this seems like one of those fun films that a director made due to the insane amounts of German tax breaks he got because of it. Or else, someone knew a lot of coke-addled strippers who were willing to crawl along a wet floor, hit each other with dumbbells and then randomly dance in a window. On a skyscraper.
Still, we owe you a video: here I am watching the trailer in real time, but sped up.

The final feathers have fallen on the Tropicana Hotel and Casino’s “Folies Bergere” in Las Vegas. At the final performance of the “Folies Bergere” on Saturday night, the Parisian topless revue dancers gave their last high-kicking can-cans. The large audience came to say its goodbye in style, with original cast members of the show and recent hires cheering wildly from the audience for each little bit of choreography by their younger counterparts.
The curtain came down lavishly on the Tropicana showgirl revue, which is said to be the longest-running showgirl review in America. The Tropicana “Folies Bergere” show was coming close to its 50th Anniversary on Christmas Day when it suddenly got its pink slip two months ago. Tropicana executives had decided not to reinvest in a new edition of the casino-owned revue, but they did not let their jewel go without one last chance to sparkle. The “Folies” died of slow starvation over the years, as management and ownership changes stalled major reinvestment in the production that in time had become more and more dated in the Cirque du Soleil era of Las Vegas.
