JERUSALEM - Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama will be visiting the Palestinian Authority president in the West Bank next week, a Palestinian government official said Monday.
Obama will be meeting with President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on July 23, Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat said.
Obama is expected to visit Israel, but officials could not yet confirm what his plans are there. Erakat was in Paris, France, where Abbas had been attending a summit.
The Obama campaign had no comment on the report.
Abbas held talks Sunday with French President Nicolas Sarkozy ahead of a sweeping summit launching the Union for the Mediterranean, bringing together leaders of more than 40 nations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Erakat said Israeli and Palestinian officials would review the status of negotiations on the sidelines of the Paris summit, discussing Israeli settlement activity, the Gaza border and Palestinian prisoner releases.JERUSALEM - Democratic presidential candidate Sen. While neither Prime Minister Ehud Olmert nor Defense Minister Ehud Barak released statements following a Kassam rocket attack on Sderot on Thursday, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni issued an uncharacteristically sharp demand for an immediate military response.
"If Israel does not react strongly and close the crossings [to Gaza] we will be subjected to a daily trickle of rockets in the South in an effort to force us into a pattern where any Israeli action in the West Bank is countered by Kassam fire," he warned. The Muslim community has raised £15,000 through two dinner-fundraisers & collecting money at Bolton's Mosques for humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza via Islamic Relief.
At one of the dinners MP Dr Brian Iddon, gave a presentation about his experiences in Gaza which he visited earlier this year:
He said: "Conditions in Gaza are bleak, with little or no fuel for public services, including garbage collection and ambulances. People have to walk to work, often arriving late, including doctors, nurses and teachers.
"Food distribution is down to the basics and, recently, the UN were unable to distribute food at all. Around 80% of Gazans now rely on charities and the UN to distribute their basic food supplies."
He added: "If electricity fails at al-Shifa hospital for 30 mins, 80 people die and, if it fails for a week, 250 people die."
He added:
This collective punishment on the imprisoned people of Gaza is illegal under international law."The Muslim community has raised £15,000 through two dinner-fundraisers &... more

The U.S. has reinstated the Fulbright scholarships of seven Gaza Strip students blocked by Israel from leaving the Hamas-ruled territory, according to a letter obtained by The Associated Press.
The students were informed Thursday that their scholarships for the upcoming academic year would be deferred because they couldn't get out of Gaza, which Israel blockaded after Islamic Hamas militants seized power a year ago.
A letter dated Sunday from the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem said officials were working to secure exit permits so the students could continue the visa and university placement process.
"We are working very closely with the Government of Israel in order to secure its cooperation in this matter," the letter said. Consulate officials would not comment Monday beyond confirming the letter's authenticity.
On Monday, Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev indicated the problem would be solved.
Israel, he added, "sincerely hopes that it will be possible to get the students out by the beginning of the coming academic year."
Israel allows pressing humanitarian cases to leave Gaza, but officials say students are not included in that definition. Some 500 students and their dependents have been allowed to leave over the past year. But exit permits have dried up in recent months in the wake of militant attacks on Israel, according to an Israeli human rights group, Gisha, which has been helping Gaza students leave for studies abroad.
Gisha director Sari Bashi welcomed the U.S. consulate's pledge to help the students. Gisha "calls on Israel to allow all students with scholarships trapped in Gaza to leave and study abroad," she told the AP.
The U.S. started appealing to Israel on Friday. The lobbying included a call from the No. 3 State Department official to Israel's ambassador in Washington on Friday morning.
State Department spokesman Tom Casey told reporters on Friday that the U.S. objected to the Israeli decision and "they heard our concerns."

Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden -- in a blunt new message that coincides with Israel's 60th anniversary -- urged his followers to liberate Palestine, a terrorism analyst told CNN on Friday.
Bin Laden's audio message, released Thursday, told listeners that "liberating" Palestine should be the aim of every Muslim, according to terrorism analyst Laura Mansfield.
The message, which was played over a still image on jihadist Web sites, runs 9 minutes and 40 seconds. In it, Bin Laden decries characterization of Palestinian militant groups as terror organizations. He also says Israel has engaged in terror.
"As your low values show double standards in one issue, you call the Palestinian organizations terror organizations. They were punished and ignored.
"On the other hand, the Israelis were killing civilians from women and children, either through car bombs as in Haifa and elsewhere. Or what is worse than that, when the Zionist organizations massacred Palestinian villagers by scaring him, deporting them, and robbing their lands, what was your stance?"
Today, bin Laden says, "we are living the massacre of Gaza," the Palestinian-controlled territory. Israeli troops and Palestinian militants from Gaza have been fighting and Israeli security moves have had severe humanitarian consequences.
"It is happening in front of the eyes of the world. One and a half million individuals under the deadly bombing are dying slowly because of poor nutrition and scarcity of medicine," bin Laden said. "But your politicians require Egypt's ruler to provision the embargo on them to choke the weak and most of them are women and children."
Bin Laden emphasizes the fighting will continue against "the Israelis and their allies, to obtain justice, to be fair to the ones mistreated."
"We will not abandon one inch of Palestine, God willing, if there is one honest Muslim man left in this world," bin Laden said.

JERUSALEM - A rocket fired from Gaza exploded in a shopping center in the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon on Wednesday, wounding at least 14 people, rescue officials said.
At least two women and one girl were seriously wounded and several other people were slightly hurt, said Leah Malul, an official at Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon.
The Magen David Adom rescue service said 14 people were wounded — three seriously — and all the casualties had been evacuated from the site of the attack.
Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement on its Web site.
Witnesses told Israeli radio stations that the rocket caused considerable damage and rescue service director Eli Bean said at least two people had been trapped under the rubble. The two were rescued and taken to hospital, Army Radio reported.
Army Radio said the rocket hit the third floor of the Hutzot mall. The report said a clinic takes up part of the floor.
The rocket attack came as President Bush wrapped up talks in Jerusalem with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. The Israeli leader said at the end of the talks that Israel would not tolerate attacks from Gaza militants.JERUSALEM - A rocket fired from Gaza exploded in a shopping center in the southern... more

During periods of recession, when Americans are thrown out of work, homes are repossessed, school budgets cut and businesses fail, Congress continues to give Israel massive amounts of our tax money; currently, about 7 million dollars per day.
On top of this, Egypt and Jordan receive large sums of money (per capita about 1/20th of what Israel receives) to buy their cooperation with Israel; and Palestinians also receive our tax money (about 1/23rd of that to Israel), to repair infrastructure that Israeli forces have destroyed, to fund humanitarian projects required due to the destruction wrought by Israel's military, and to convince Palestinian officials to take actions beneficial to Israel. These sums should also be included in expenditures on behalf of Israel.
When all are added together, it turns out that for many years over half of all US tax money abroad has been expended to benefit a country the size of New Jersey.
It is certainly time to begin debating this disbursement of our hard-earned money. It is quite possible that we have better uses for it.
To decide whether the US should continue military aid to any nation, it is essential to examine the nature and history of the recipient nation, how it has used our military aid in the past, whether these uses are in accord with our values, and whether they benefit the American taxpayers who are putting up the money.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) released a report on Tuesday that dozens of Palestinians have died while waiting for Israeli permission to receive medical care in Israel.
The WHO says thirty-two Gaza residents have died awaiting treatment since October.
The victims ranged from a one-year child to a seventy-seven-year old man.
Six of the dead were waiting for permits. Others were denied permits because Israeli officials labeled them a security risk - including a 65-year-old woman. Others had received permits for themselves but had to await Israeli permission to admit Palestinian doctors. Others died while waiting to cross the border into Israel. The World Health Organisation (WHO) released a report on Tuesday that dozens of... more

Or, as another friend of mine said when talking about the proper role for the United States in resolving (with justice) the conflict: "Friends don't let friends drive drunk".
Excerpt: For years the same old dance has been going on in which the Americans scold and the Israelis promise, as though the Israelis have decided to make every effort to thwart the solution that everyone knows is the only solution. Time is running out and the self-deception is continuing. Not the Americans, but rather the Israelis will bear the results of this continued disorder.

When I was a teenager, I became a born-again Christian and an avid reader of the "Late Great Planet Earth" the endtimes book that preceded the "Left Behind" series popular today among those who think the end is near. One of the signs of the second coming of Christ, according to interpreters of the Revelations (like the authors of books above) is the creation of the State of Israel.
When the Yom Kippur War hit, I was on the phone with my born again girlfriends, all of us excited that this was it.... the Rapture was surely going to happen soon.
When it didn't, I wasn't worried, no problem, I'll just go live in Israel and volunteer on a kibbutz and help my Jewish brothers and sisters make the desert bloom.
As I grew up, reality kicked in and the fervor of adolescence faded. What remained was a fondness for Israel - and the belief that it was besieged on all sides. The Palestinians? Nothing but irrational terrorists who raised their children to hate and kill Jews.
Then, my husband was offered a short term assignment through his groundwater engineering job in Gaza, and we, my four-year old daughter and I went along too.
And thus began my permanent detour off my own Road Map.
The detour involved for awhile a profound internal struggle as I tried to reconcile my previous bias with the reality of occupation and oppression I was witnessing. Everyday I saw the result of the fear when the once fearful become the powerful. Someday, if Israel doesn't change its policies in time (and many Israelis I know are concerned that it is too late now) the backlash will be devastating.
Now we are back in the US and I work hard at my second job - to raise awareness among Americans in general, my Presbyterians co-congregants in particular that the key to Israel's survival is the United States, but not in the way most commonly thought. Rather, we must hold Israel accountable (as we do the Palestinians) to the international code of conduct accepted by all nation-states. That attacks on civilians is illegal, that an occupying state may not establish civilian settlements on occupied land, that separation barrier ("security fence") must be on the Green Line, not within the Palestinian Territories..... all these violations (and more), must stop.
But when the US restricts its admonitions to a mere slap on the wrist, the Israelis know they can keep on keeping on.
My church, the Presbyterians will be considering a resolution this summer calling the US government to enforce our nation's own Arms Export and Foreign Assistance laws that prohibit US aid be used in violations of international human rights law. It's a beginning. And our church is not the only one. Across the country, individuals and groups small and large are joining voices in opposition to continued, uninterrupted flow of our tax dollars to Israel. Even a temporary suspension can have an impact.
At the very least, we should consider that nothing our country has done to date has ended the conflict. Time for something new. When I was a teenager, I became a born-again Christian and an avid reader of the... more
