Well, it's the Christmas season and many years ago while attending the Dickens Faire in San Francisco we walked out and found a guy selling roasted chestnuts. This of course brought back to my mind the old song line Chestnuts roasting on an open fire... so I had to try some to see what they were about. I think we paid about $2 for a newspaper wrapped cone of them. I was lucky enough to be able to try them again because some friends of mine dropped by last night and handed me a bag of them That they had gotten from Skyline Chestnuts that they wanted to share with us.Well, it's the Christmas season and many years ago while attending the Dickens... more

~heart of winter
Season Yule,
(as winter falls soft and wan
upon a failing breath;
such listless cool breath
as yielding fall),…
will gather her charms in subtle humor portent,
to arouse in ache for spring
anew
all these frosty glitter twinkle shards
of rainbow hue in bulb and tinsel,
are garland round
as hanging ice,…
to mark,… as wish, or promise, or plea,
a cold desire
for warmth again
soft, with frozen trace
springs’ crystal frost lattice,
is born as grown as nurtured
in slow remorseless charm of borrowed light
upon this brittle window pane,
as mute her solstice voice
has spun a vow;
soft fragile-fractal-writ.
… to plead with all such loving diamond tithe,
such heatless passion craft,
of naked chill;
a yearning winter.~heart of winter
Season Yule,

Unsure of what to get a friend for Christmas? Not particularly looking forward to braving the insane crowds as the present deadline draws near? No one ever is. So why not stay home and shop from the comfort of your computer chair?
Steam is making your last-minute Christmas purchases easy, especially for those people who are hard to buy for. Why just get them one game when you can give them a huge variety of titles, all for the price of a one! And for those of you who are getting money from Gumgum and Pep-pep, well you’re in luck too, since the sale goes until January 3rd.
For details on this ridiculous sale, hit the link.

Winter is a time of many celebrations, and we want to wish everyone a Happy Christmas/Yule/Winter Solstice/Hannukah/Kwanzaa/day off work.
Personally, I'm interested in seeing all the different ways people celebrate this season, so I thought I'd share so me interesting holiday-related links I've found.
If you're celebrating Christmas, you might want to check out Norad's Santa Tracker.
http://www.noradsanta.org/ (You can also track Santa on Twitter--just follow noradsanta)
Or, you can check out this gallery of kids scared of Santa. I'll admit to finding some of these absolutely hilarious.

It's a little late for the Winter Solstice, but you can read about the origins of various Winter Solstice celebrations here:

Tonight is the fourth night of Hanukkah, and I found a lot of great information here:

But none of it beat this DIY LED mini Menorah. Crafty, geeky, and festive? Count me in!

I'll admit, I don't know a lot about Kwanzaa, so I thought this was really interesting.

For those of you who don't celebrate any of these, did you know that today is National Egg Nog day? I didn't, and I also didn't realize there were so many different recipes for egg nog! I may have to try one of these out.

Finally, tomorrow is also National Pumpkin Pie Day. Regardless of what holidays you celebrate, I can't think of a better excuse to curl up with slice of pie and a glass of egg nog and relax.
Happy Holidays!

Courtesy of Daily Mantra, you now have a smattering of alternative gift ideas (with a slew still to come, for ongoing inspiration). Some of the pressure is off, and pieces are falling into place. So let's take a moment to explore how this holiday gift-giving frenzy begin? The traditional exchange of winter holiday gifts stems from the Roman and Pagan Saturnalia celebrations, a winter Solstice festival honoring the god Saturn. In addition to a brief reversal of social roles among slaves and masters, the Saturnalia festivities included gift exchanges, honoring deceased loved ones. These gifts, often wax candles or earthenware figures, signified specific elements of the departed's life or personality, allowing them to live on in the recipient's heart.
