Dubai: The rash of Somali pirate attacks on ships as far out as the middle of the Indian Ocean has forced organisers of the 39,000km global Volvo Ocean Race to take unprecedented steps to protect competing yachts from attack on the open seas.
Volvo Ocean Race - 2009, Leg 9
The original plan called for six racing yachts worth an estimated $100 million (Dh367 million) to race unfettered from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi as part of the second leg of the Volvo Ocean Race from Alicante, Spain to Galway, Ireland.
However, after the six contenders left Cape Town port, they plotted a track for an undisclosed “safe haven port” somewhere in the Indian Ocean where the vessels will be transferred into an armed heavy lift ship and transported under armed guard to waters off Sharjah.
When lowered into Gulf waters later on, they will be less than a day’s sail from Abu Dhabi, the finish line for the second leg. It is the first time Abu Dhabi will host the race.
“This solution means we still have the exciting race finish into Abu Dhabi as always planned, while steering clear of the most dangerous waters off the Eastern African corridor,” said Knut Frostad, CEO of the race.

In a statement, Volvo Ocean Race said: “Once unloaded, race management will decide where exactly to re-start the race for a short competitive sprint into Abu Dhabi, which is hosting the event from December 31 to January 14. The sailors will not be on board the ship.”
To account for the unprecedented break in sailing competition, there have been changes in the way competing skippers earn points, said organisers noting that 80 per cent of Leg 2 points will be accumulated up until the safe haven port. The remaining 20 per cent of points will be won in the sprint to Abu Dhabi from Sharjah.

Underwater yachts . . .
The U-010 Undersea Yacht is one seriously luxurious yacht. Designed to explore the depths of the ocean in style, the U-010 Undersea Yacht is comfortable and safe. Coming equipped with “integrated systems of stabilization, the passage on the sea surface is slow and comfortable even under the worst conditions.
This underwater yacht is essentially a submarine, but an awesome and luxurious one that will make even Sir Richard Branson jealous that he doesn’t have one yet. I wouldn’t mind exploring the ocean in one of these.

Solar Cleantech Report:
o Solar Electric Yacht Hybrid 25m
o Solar Floating Island Yacht by Hermes & Wally MC
o Li-Ion electric Submarine U-boat Worx
o Clean Port, no smoke Diesel generator
o Green Prize for low carbon Yacht manufacturing
The Show was overbooked, many people
more Sellers than Buyers (agent with Cellular phone pictures bussy)
starting to think about CO2 tax one day ?
Why Solar - Cleantech Yachts now ?
the simple answer, good weather, sunshine, yacht show
a lot of Diesel pollution in the Air, also from stationary
Aircondition Containers for the Show rooms.
The port has to get a clean place with yachts filtering
Diesel and on-board real waste water treatment
to keep the beautiful Riviera clean for Swimmers
How does a Solar Yacht produce money ?
Well with the coming "Obama smart grid",
not only electric cars or Solar PV roofs
deliver to the grid electricity. Also Yachts
with big surface plug-in the port smart grid and
deliver Electricity if batteries full. Most of
the year anyway they are in the port in the
Sun. Additional Range extenders do the long
Range, or better the Hydrogen combustion
or Fuel cell Yacht with Zero emission.
Can luxury contribute to Environment ?
It has, the money is here for prototypes

from Hermes & Wally, a Monaco Initiative.
Today the Solar electric shuttle boat
brings the Cruiseship guests to Monaco.

The concept is interesting, but could not
yet convince me, every year a new project
for Renewables in China or so, not to control;
no local Initiative for neighboring Africa with
online progress video reports for the population
hit most by climate change.
