Old-timers talk about a storm that blew through Washington in 1922, collapsing the roof on the Knickerbocker theater and killing more than 90 people. Their great-great-grandchildren will be able to describe the back-to-back blizzards of 2010, which were not nearly as deadly but set records for the snowiest winters ever in Washington and Baltimore.
Up to 16 inches fell in parts of western Maryland. Reagan National Airport outside Washington had nearly 10 inches by 2 p.m., and Baltimore got nearly a foot. That was on top of totals up to 3 feet in some places from the weekend storm.
"I have never in my lifetime seen or heard anything quite like this," said D.C. Fire Chief Dennis L. Rubin, who was born and raised in the District.
The previous records for snowiest winters were 62.5 inches in Baltimore in 1995-96, and 54.4 inches in Washington in 1898-99. As of Wednesday afternoon, Baltimore had 72.3 inches so far this winter and Reagan had 54.9.
Heavy snow also fell in New York and New Jersey. Airlines canceled hundreds of flights, and New York City's 1.1 million schoolchildren enjoyed only their third snow day in six years. The Washington area's two airports had no flights coming or going Wednesday.
The streets of downtown Philadelphia, which was close to setting its own snow record, were nearly vacant as people heeded the mayor's advice to stay home.Old-timers talk about a storm that blew through Washington in 1922, collapsing the... more

"The most exciting thing about music in this peculiar era is the ability for musicians to cut out the fat middleman and be self-sufficient music makers. Lendway, the melodic rock quartet from Burlington, Vermont certainly fits the mold of the self-sustaining band that does their thing for the mere sake of doing it, and because the technology of the day permits such liberated musical pursuits. Their soulfully airy 11-song debut album, The Low Red End, was recorded in closets and basements, and paid for by sacrificed time and the collective effort of each band member.....""The most exciting thing about music in this peculiar era is the ability for... more

In today’s Time Magazine online we learn that in the State of Vermont, among perhaps the most left leaning population in the Union, a secessionist movement has started in the wake of these unpopular wars. They have a slate of anti-war and secessionist candidates and they are running for office in the state. The piece is entitled Secessionist Campaign for the Republic of Vermont .
It seems that roughly 13% of the state’s population presently claims that they support the movement. Here is an excerpt from the article:
“According to a 2007 poll, they have support from at least 13% of state voters. The campaign slogan, Naylor told me, is “Imagine Free Vermont.” In his fondest imaginings, Naylor said, Vermonters would not be “forced to participate in killing women and children in the Middle East.”
This is what happens when our nation continually engages in these ridiculous and unnecessary wars overseas without taking into account the wishes of her citizens.
This is what happens when Amerika places money and potential power grabs overseas ahead of the wishes of the people and instead caters to the whims of the military industrial complex, the emerging market manipulators, the war industry captains, the energy cartels and any other group that the Supreme Court has now given the powers of citizenship.
It is no accident that this is now public knowledge throughout the nation after the Supreme Court decided that money rules our political system.
No it does not.
We now face serious attempts at secession from citizens who have no intention of being ignored by the central government and its manipulating, puppet-master elites who constantly have access to the levers of power, regardless of the will of the citizens at large.
Fascism in our country is now facing a viable and growing citizens’ anti-war and secessionist movement willing to finance candidates who support state secession and an anti-war platform.
We are talking about civil war ultimately if this carries through to its logical end.
Does Washington D.C. understand this?
This is the ultimate result of generation upon generation of rule by the elites, rule by the Robber Barons, rule of money and its supposed power over the will of the people. One man, one vote cannot be ignored forever.
Money and its power is meaningless in this situation if civil war ensues because aware citizens realize that they have been preempted by money, power, position and ignorance of what it means to carry the burdens of working class America.
Don’t anybody ever say that I did not say for years, “I told you so!”
The chickens are coming home to roost. In today’s Time Magazine online we learn that in the State of Vermont, among... more

"What you are about to read is the final product of research that was compiled through observation, first-hand interviews and experiences, random conversations, and secondary resources. The subject of this research was the tiny city of Winooski, Vermont. And sure, some of you are thinking, “What the hell is Winooski and why should I care?” However, if I’ve learned anything from this experience it is that Winooski’s history and current situation mirrors many of the struggles Americans overcame and the struggles towns and cities across the country are currently trying to cope with. Even if you never heard of Winooski, let alone been there, this is a story that should resonate on some level...""What you are about to read is the final product of research that was compiled... more

Peter Garritano thinks it's time for Vermont to call it quits with America.
The way the 54-year-old automobile salesman sees it, the "empire" is about to implode and tiny Vermont can lead the way by becoming its own independent republic. So he's running for lieutenant governor, topping a slate of secession-minded candidates seeking statewide offices this year.
Their name: Vermont Independence Day.
"The only hope is to just say, 'Look, this isn't working for us. We want to start fresh again, with a real democracy,'" Garritano said. "I think that's the answer. Hopefully, it won't take another horrible economic breakdown to realize that the people running things don't look out for the little guy, or us, or the soldiers. It's all about profit and getting the last drops of oil on Earth and trampling people's rights."
Garritano, gubernatorial candidate Dennis P. Steele and seven candidates for state Senate seats plan to declare their candidacies Friday.
Their cause isn't new: It's the latest incarnation of a movement that's bubbled in Vermont and elsewhere for years. Alaska, Hawaii, New Hampshire and Texas all have made noise about seceding, to no avail.
Their method is: Organizers say it's the first time since the Civil War that a secession movement has fielded a slate of candidates for statewide office, although individual pro-secession candidates have run before.
Few political observers give them much hope of winning, even in a left-leaning state where the popular Republican governor's decision not to seek re-election has touched off a scramble among would-be successors, with five Democrats and a Republican in a wide-open race for the seat headed to the Nov. 2 election.
Unlikelier still is the idea that, if elected, the candidates could accomplish their goal, critics say.

In Burlington, Vermont over 100 people gathered on Saturday December, 12 to say "No more war in Afghanistan" and to denounce Barack Obama's 30,000 person troop surge to Afghanistan. The rally took place one day after 350 members of the Vermont National Guard departed for training before deployment to Afghanistan early next year. Vermont is sending more than 1,500 National Guards people to Afghanistan, this is the largest deployment of Vermont's National Guard since World War II. As of July 2009, the Vermont National Guard had a total of 2,660 people enlisted, this leaves Vermont with just over 1,000 guards to protect the state in the event of an emergency. Dozens of similar demonstrations took place across the country on Saturday. Thousands of people spoke out against the troop surge and the escalating war in Afghanistan. Local author and activist, Ben Dangl, attended the rally. "This December 12th protest in Burlington, VT coincided with protests around the nation denouncing Obama's troop escalation in Afghanistan, and should signal the re-emergence of a much-needed anti-war movement. From Afghanistan to Honduras and beyond, Obama's foreign policy is a devastating continuation of US imperialism and needs to be stopped.” Despite the freezing cold temperature and frigid winds the crowd stayed warm singing chants, "Same lies, same plan, troops out of Afghanistan". The event was organized by local activist Jonathan Leavitt. "Our political leaders have failed us, allowing more Vermont National Guard to be shipped into the meatgrinder that is Afghanistan than remain here in Vermont, leaving us dangerously vulnerable to disasters. Until Vermonters organize and rise up in mass civil disobedience, we are allowing ourselves to be implicated in an illegal and immoral occupation, which in turn leaves us vulnerable to the common blizzard" Speaking to the crowd Leavitt encourages that "Hopefully starting today...a righteous flame of indignation can rise in the anti-war movement to say no more, not another dollar, not another dayfor this illegal and immoral war!"In Burlington, Vermont over 100 people gathered on Saturday December, 12 to say... more

The maker of Monster energy drinks has taken aim at a Vermont brewery that sells a beer called "The Vermonster," ordering it to stop selling, advertising and promoting the craft brew because it could confuse consumers.
(AP, 2009, October 12, par.2)
Matt Nadeau, who owns the brewery with his wife, Renee, says he's been told by five trademark attorneys that the law is probably on his side, but that proving it through lengthy litigation could bankrupt him.
(AP, 2009, October 12, par.3)
Nadeau contacted Reed to say the products are in two different markets — beer and energy drinks — and offered to surrender any rights to use the name on an energy drink. According to Nadeau, Reed said that's not Hansen's concern, but that Hansen wants to enter the alcoholic beverage market.
(AP, 2009, October 12, par.10)
"The way the law is arranged, the holder of a trademark has to be very aggressive in defending it, even when it's overreaching," said Douglas Riley, Nadeau's trademark attorney. "If you miss a legitimate infringement, people will point out in later years that you weren't defending your properties. You can lose it if you don't defend it, so you err on the side of caution.
(AP, 2009, October 12, par.13)
David S. Welkowitz, a trademark law expert who's not involved in the case, says there isn't a hard-and-fast answer, but that litigating the dispute could take a long time — and a lot of money.
(AP, 2009, October 12, par.16)
Nadeau has taken his beef online. Rock Art's Web site headlines a description of the dispute as "Rock Art Brewery vs. Corporate America."

It's apple season, folks, and the best way to get them is to go and pick them yourselves. Yesterday, Dorothee and I headed to Shelburne, VT, which is about 10 miles south of Burlington, to visit Shelburne Orchards, a 80-acre orchard that grows both organic and non-organic apples.
Apples are at the center of the organic vs. local debate in the Northeast, because it's so difficult to grow organic apples in this climate. Before finding Shelburne, I called around to several Vermont orchards, and most of the growers told me that they weren't organic and that they didn't even know of any organic apple growers in the area.

Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream has always had a reputation for social activism, the most recent example (prior to this one) being the 'Yes, Pecan!' flavour they released during Barack Obama's campaign for the presidency. Now, they have rebranded 'Chubby Hubby' (chocolate-covered peanut butter-filled pretzel nuggets in ice cream, sadly not sold in Britain) 'Hubby Hubby' for the length of September to mark Vermont's decision to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream has always had a reputation for social activism, the... more

Vermont began issuing marriage licenses today to same sex couples. Vermont passed a marriage equality bill this summer that was signed into law by the governor. Vermont, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire all have marriage equality laws. New York recognizes marriages from other states and countries but failed to pass a marriage equality bill after a hostile take over of the New York Senate earlier this summer.
Meanwhile...
Maine's marriage bill is in jeopardy, as the Mormans are funneling millions of dollars through NOM into the state to pass the "people's veto". Mainers are encouraged to vote No. on 1 to support equality.
In Washington the Domestic Partnership bill that was passed this year is being challenged by the anti gay activists. To protect same sex marriage rights there, vote to approve referendum 71.

After 17 years together, Bill Slimback and Bob Sullivan couldn't wait another minute to get married. So they didn't.
With Vermont's new law allowing same-sex marriage only a minute old, they tied the knot in a midnight ceremony at a rustic lodge, becoming one of the first couples to legally wed under a law that took effect at midnight Monday.
Dressed in suits, saying their vows under a large wall-mounted moose head, the two Whitehall, N.Y., men promised their love, exchanged rings and held hands during a modest 17-minute ceremony. Moose Meadow Lodge co-owner Greg Trulson, who's also a Justice of the Peace, presided.
"It feels wonderful," said Slimback, 38, an out-of-work Teamster who is taking Sullivan's last name as his own. "It's a day I've been long waiting for, and a day I truly honestly thought would never come."
Slimback said he and Sullivan, 41, have long wanted to cement their relationship with a wedding, but since they couldn't legally marry in New York they chose to wed even before Vermont's gay marriage era officially dawned.
Vermont is one of five states that now allow same-sex couples to marry. Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa are the others. New Hampshire's law takes effect Jan. 1, 2010.
Vermont, which invented civil unions in 2000 after a same-sex couple challenged the inequality of state marriage statutes, was a mecca for gay couples who to that point had no way to officially recognize their relationships.
Since then, other states have allowed gay marriage, as did Vermont, which in April became the first state to legalize gay marriage through a legislative decree and not a court case.
Some couples - including many who obtained civil unions in Vermont - plan to return to the state to get married. But most are in no rush. City and town officials say only a handful of licenses had been issued to same-sex couples in anticipation of Tuesday's start.
"We've waited a long time to do this - basically, our whole lives," Slimback said Monday. "We've been waiting for a chance to actually solidify it," he said. He and Sullivan said they never wanted to obtain a civil union because they believe that's a kind of second-class recognition. After 17 years together, Bill Slimback and Bob Sullivan couldn't wait another... more

Maple syrup and beautiful countryside are among the natural wonders of Vermont. Medical marijuana is also at the top of this list.
If you live in Vermont and desire protection under the state’s medical marijuana registry, you must first obtain a doctor’s recommendation. At this time, there are no compassion clinics in Vermont, so the recommendation must come from your private physician.
Once your doctor signs off on your application, simply forward it to the Vermont Marijuana Registry with $50 and once approved, you will be protected to possess up to two ounces of usable marijuana. At this time there are no dispensaries or co-ops in Vermont, however caregivers do exist under the rules of the program.
