"I feel that I no longer wish to support your presidential campaign and ask that you please return the maximum contribution that I gave to you last year," Bill White wrote in a letter addressed to the former Massachusetts governor and obtained by CNN.
"You have chosen to be on the wrong side of history and I do not support your run for president any longer," White added.
CNN contacted the Romney campaign but did not receive a response.

Yesterday, President Obama made a historic announcement: he supports gay and lesbian Americans receiving the rights and benefits of marriage. The American Humanist Association has long lobbied for marriage equality and support of the LGBT community, and we thank President Obama for standing up for LGBT rights.

“I commend President Obama for his support of marriage equality. The right to choose whom to marry is not just a civil right, but a fundamental human right. That is why I opposed the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 and support its repeal today. And it is why I strongly support President Obama taking a stand on this important moral issue. President Obama and Vice President Biden have taken courageous, sound, and appropriate positions supporting equal rights for all Americans.”“I commend President Obama for his support of marriage equality. Sixty percent of North Carolinians went to the polls Tuesday and knowingly voted to ban civil unions. They voted to stop the handful of cities who offer domestic partner benefits from doing so. They voted to throw a wrench in the families of same sex couples and make it harder to insure their children, and they voted to deny the dignity of partners during medical emergencies or end of life decisions.

To hear many of his supporters tell it in 2008, then-candidate Barack Obama’s opposition to marriage equality and the repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was simply a matter of political expediency rather than personal or political preference. After the machinations in 2004 that put same-sex marriage bans on the ballot in swing states and ginned up Republican turn-out, taking a principled stand in favor of full civil rights for LGBT people was considered too politically risky in the tight race.
In 2012, Obama’s about to have the chance to prove such supporters right. But whether he’ll do so or not is still an open question.
Obama’s position on same sex marriage wasn’t exactly nuanced in 2008: he opposed it. His running mate, then-Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) said in the VP debate with then-Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) that marriage equality was not in the cards during an Obama Administration: “No, neither Barack Obama nor I support redefining from a civil side what constitutes marriage. We do not support that. That is basically the decision to be able to should be left to faiths and people who practice their faiths the determination what to call it.”
Though in 2011 Obama ordered his Justice Department to stop defending DOMA in court, the law still prevents federal recognition of same sex marriages — thus denying those couples federal benefits — and allows states to refuse to recognize same sex marriages performed elsewhere. Binational couples still can’t get green cards that allow the non-American spouse to work, a same sex marriage can be legal in one state and not recognized one state away, and despite Obama’s order, the House is paying a private lawyer to defend DOMA in court to try to deny married same sex couples Social Security survivor benefits and more.
In the mean time, public opinion on same sex marriage has all but reversed itself since 2004 and 2008: whereas Gallup showed that only 42 and 40 percent of Americans (respectively) supported marriage equality in those election years, their most recent poll shows 53 percent now support it. Other nationwide polls bear out these findings. What was viewed as too risky to support in 2008 might well be too risky not to support in 2012.
Other Democrats have noticed — mostly recently, four former chairs of the Democratic National Committee support including marriage equality in the Democratic party’s official 2012 platform, which Obama is nominally running on. They join, as Huffington Post’s Amanda Terkel wrote, “almost half of all Democratic senators, several of President Barack Obama’s national campaign co-chairs, the House Minority Leader and the chairman of the Democratic convention, among others.”
But the closest Obama himself has come to supporting marriage equality is a statement from White House spokesperson Jay Carney that he “continues to ‘evolve’” on the issue, though Carney added, “You know his position, where it stands now, on the position of same-sex marriage.” In March, an anonymous source told the Washington Blade that the White House and the campaign were having “active conversation” about whether the President should support marriage equality before the November election and that it was even odds that he might.

HERE and in other blogs the DIRTY DIRTY truth is exposed to light of day."One thing they have followed through on is their own version of the Southern Strategy, this time with black anti-gay bigotry. .. Jeremy Hooper at GoodAsYou blog has lots of evidence, 13 examples in this post alone.
NOM "Democratic power bosses are increasingly inclined to privilege the concerns of gay rights groups over the values of African Americans. A strategic goal of this project is to amplify the voice and power of the black Americans within the Democratic Party."
Well, the African American voices that oppose marriage equality. I have a feeling they won't be seeking to "amplify" African American Newark, NJ Mayor Corey Booker's voice. NAACP's Ben Jealous and Julian Bond haven't been singing NOM's tune either.
Another passage seeks to play off the growing Latino population's cultural pride by tying opposition to marriage equality to their cultural identity. It seeks to "interrupt this process of assimilation" that has Latinos blending with their communities.
"The Latino vote in America is a key swing vote, and will be so even more so in the future, both because of demographic growth and inherent uncertainty: Will the process of assimilation to the dominant Anglo culture lead Hispanics to abandon traditional family values? We must interrupt this process of assimilation by making support for marriage a key badge of Latino identity - a symbol of resistance to inappropriate assimilation."

Less than an hour after same sex marriage became legal in Washington on Monday, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum was meeting with opponents of the law.
Speaking at Calvary Chapel in Olympia, the former Pennsylvania senator promised about 100 pastors and so-called “values voters” that he would work to repeal marriage equality in the state.
“We have a serious issue about trying to get moms and dads to marry and stay together,” Santorum explained. “I don’t see this as encouraging that. I think that at least from my perspective it tends to water down marriage instead of encouraging men and women to form healthy marriages, and that to me should be the objective of the government because that is in the best interests of our society.”
The candidate also spoke out about a recent U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision that overturned the same sex marriage ban in California.
“It’s pretty intolerant to suggest that people have no rational reason to be in favor of this institution that has been the bulwark of society for 235 years,” Santorum said, adding that both sides needed to “be respectful.”

Washington State House Passes Same-Sex Marriage Bill By 55-43 Vote
February 8, 2012
By Stephen D. Foster Jr.
Just a day after the Ninth Circuit Court struck down Proposition 8 in California, the Washington state House of Representatives passed a bill to legalize same-sex marriage by a vote of 55-43. The bill, which now heads to Governor Chris Gregoire to be signed, will legalize same-sex marriage but also protects churches, religious groups, and affiliated institutions from being charged with discrimination against same-sex couples.
Nevertheless, this is a huge step for LGBT equality in America. Once signed into law, Washington will become the seventh state to legalize same-sex marriage, joining Massachusetts, Iowa, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New York, Vermont, and Washington DC. California could soon join this group if the Supreme Court upholds the Ninth Circuit’s verdict on Prop 8, and New Jersey could also legalize same-sex marriage soon.
Anti-gay groups and their Republican allies are already vowing to overturn the legislation via two referendum measures, one for repeal, and one that would define marriage as exclusively between one man and one woman (Similar to California’s Prop 8). For now, the LGBT community can celebrate yet another step for freedom and equality before stepping up to defend it against Right Wing attacks. 2012 is shaping up to be a banner year for LGBT rights

A day after insisting that the media had taken his comments about not being concerned for the poor out of context, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney shifted positions on Thursday, claiming he simply “misspoke.”
On Monday, Romney had told CNN’s Soledad O’Brien that he wasn’t running for president to help the most impoverished Americans.
“I’m not concerned about the very poor, we have a safety net there, if we need to repair, I’ll fix it,” he said. “The challenge right now — we will hear from the Democrat party the plight of the poor. And there’s no question it’s not good being poor. And we have a safety net to help those that are very poor, but my campaign is focused is on middle-income Americans.”
A day later aboard his campaign charter plane, the candidate blamed reporters for not putting his comment in context.
“No, no, no, no,” the former Massachusetts governor said. “You’ve got to take the whole sentence, all right, as opposed to saying, and then change it just a little bit, because then it sounds very different. I’ve said throughout the campaign my focus, my concern, my energy is gonna be devoted to helping middle income people, all right?”
Speaking to KSNV’s John Ralston later that afternoon, Romney finally began to take responsibility for his remarks.
“John, it was a misstatement,” the candidate asserted. “I misspoke.”
“I’ve said something that is similar to that but quite acceptable for a long time. And you know when you do I don’t know how many thousands of interviews, now and then you may get it wrong. And I misspoke, plain and simple.”

Outgoing Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank is preparing for his new role as a married man.
NECN reported on Thursday that Frank will tie the knot with his longtime partner, Jim Ready, in a ceremony in Massachusetts. The couple has been together since 2007.
“Look, I have a partner now, Jim Ready,” Frank told PBS’ Charlie Rose earlier this month. “I have an emotional attachment. I’m in love for the first time in my life.”
Even though same sex marriage is legal in Massachusetts, the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) means that gay couples do not have true marriage equality.
“It is, of course, somewhat ironic that because of DOMA and because Barney is a federal employee, Jim won’t be eligible for any of the benefits that any other spouse would be able to get,” Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders executive director Lee Swislow told The Associated Press.
“I think it’s always positive when public figures are role models in these critical societal institutions.”
Frank, 71, announced in November that he would retire at the end of his current term. He has served as one of the most prominent gay members of Congress since 1981.

Yesterday, after the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced marriage equality legislation, New Jersey Democrats tore into Gov. Chris Christie (R) for calling on gay and lesbian marriage rights to be put on the ballot. “We vote on issues here, we don’t put civil rights on the ballot,” Senate President Steve Sweeney (D) said, before criticizing a reporter who suggested that lawmakers were wasting time by holding hearings on a bill that Christie has pledged to veto. “The point of going through a fight for civil rights, are you kidding me? For standing up for people to give them the same rights? I’m offended by that,” he exclaimed. “[I]f the Governor wants to stifle and silence his colleagues that’s one thing, but he’s not going to stifle or silence us. Someone has to stand up for equality and fairness.” Watch it:
